Do you own a boardgame copy of Diplomacy?
As there have been some IP questions about WebDip recently, I thought it might be useful to have a survey of how many of us own a cardboard version of the game. If enough of us own the game, it might convince Big H lawyers (may they never come knocking) that WebDip is not really hurting sales of the game.

delay of game: rude way to play?
Just asking for thoughts.
So I just finished a game where a player put in and saved orders and then never readied them, even when he was the only one who needed to make an order or everyone else readied. Even when he had only one possible order, like destroying a trapped unit.

Now if he had used the extra time to make complex moves, I would understand. I would have bu complaint at all if he used the time to try to negotiate with other players to try to change the diplomatic situation.

But according to other players, he was silent. He also didn't talk to me. He apparently stated to another player that he was getting revenge on the other players. Im personally offended by that and have resolved never to play another game with thus player. Does anybody else feel that slowing a game out of spite is unreasonable?
I would have no*

No idea why autocorrect would put bu.

How do you know it was out of spite? Maybe, just on principle, he likes to take the full time in order to think out his orders? If you want to play a faster game, then choose a faster game. I sometimes let the time run out not because of "spite", but simply because I want the full time to run out for various reasons...perhaps involving schedules in life, perhaps because I want to think about the game, whatever.

You need to just chill. A 24-Hour-Turn game means you had better expect 24 hours for every turn, and be patient.

Likewise, do NOT ask me to <Pause> the game because you suddenly remembered you are going on vacation and can't finish the game you just started. On *principle*, I no longer offer Pauses -- you should find a sitter if you have to leave. Too many times people ask for a "X-day" Pause....and X + 30 days we are still waiting for the UN-Pause.

That extra bit about Pausing is free advice on top of the requested advice. :)
Thanks, and I would give him the benefit of the doubt if he didn't specifically say it was out of spite.

Also, I've learned never to join a game that you're in, for what that's worth. Games are much more likely to be ruined, IMO, by somebody refusing to pause so that another player can CD than by any sort of delay. That seems atrociously rude.

I definitely agree with Krellin on people saving their orders and taking the full 24 hours. Sometimes I have other stuff going on and save my orders, intending to come back to them and maybe make a few changes, and forget to or get busy. Other times, I just like to think them over. If you join a 24 hr phase game, then it doesn't matter what the reason is or how often it is occurring, you have no reason to complain about another player using all 24 hours.

It is everyone's right to take the entire turn cycle to play a turn. If you don't like the length of the turn cycle why did you join the game? If you can't stand a certain length of turn cycle then create your own game with the proper cycle length and wait for like-minded individuals to join.

If someone makes you wait I suggest pulling a massive bong hit followed by a cold beer and a handful of dry roasted peanuts.
krellin (80 DX)

Swordsman - if you don't want to join a game that I'm in because some inconsiderate asshole joined the game with the full knowledge that they were going to ask for a Pause - then don't join a game. If you think for a nano-second that I am in *any* way offended that you won't join a game with me, then you need to go stroke yourself, because you show yourself a little bit too much love. For a guy with 2036 D, you sure are a naive asshole.
krellin (80 DX)
22 Oct 11 UTC
As for a guy specifically saying he is doing it out of spite....I suppose if I were playing with an asshole such as yourself, I might do it out of spite too, because no doubt you were whining and publicly bitching about it in the game...which would cause a good number of people to do it out of spite, you whiny little bitch.
General Cool (178 D)

That's a little much for someone asking for a simple yes or no answer.
It's useful to know if somebody never, ever pauses. At least he's being upfront about it, but I don't want to play with such a player. I can think of a lot of games that have been ruined due to lack of pausing or would have been.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
22 Oct 11 UTC
Sorry Swordsman3003, but you have no argument here. There is no obligation (moral or otherwise) on players to finalise their orders before the turn limit. A player always has the full turn length to complete their orders. If you join a 123-day turn game, expect it to take 123 days for each turn to take place.
SuperSteve (894 D)

I'm with you that making others wait to punish is petty. I've never refused a pause... but I don't think it's cool to make a practice of asking for it. Meh... Life sometimes gets in the way.
SacredDigits (102 D)

I often will take the full 24 hours during busy times of my life because I want to stretch out the next time I'll have to input orders.

Say at Friday 2 pm I get a retreat phase of just me. And I know I have stuff going on plus talking to do during Fall moves. So I'll just ready the command since 2 pm Sat-2 pm Sun looks better for me that 2 pm Fri-2 pm Sat

Swordsman, I do NOT issue pauses for casual reasons, like some asshole that joins a game two days before going on vacation. If you had reading skills, you would have seen that. Yes....I used hyperbole in saying that I will never issue a pause. ON Principle, I do not issue pauses for stupid reasons. If your Grandma dies, you get a Pause.

I suppose you are one of thoe morons that issues Pauses willy-nilly, huh? For that reason, I would chose to NOT play with you. You are gullible and have no principle, in my mind, if you are such a sap that you give a pause whenever anyone asks for one, no matter the reason.

Is it really so rude to join a game when you know you'll be out of town and needing a pause in the near future? Doesn't seem bad to me as long as you give appropriate notice....
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

As long as you okay it with everyone who will be joining then I don't see a problem but most people do not, and that is where the problems come up.
krellin (80 DX)
22 Oct 11 UTC
How the hell can you join a game and inform everyone prior to joining that you will be gone....that is only applicable if you are the ast person to join or....oh get the fuck out of here. You two are fucking idiots. Why the hell would you WANT to join a game only to ask for a pause? What sort of a douchebag are you? If you know you can't play....why not WAIT to join a game until you are back from vacation or whatever is going to delay you? The only conceivable reason to join with a pre-determined pause is that you are joining with close friends who are aware ahead of time with the situation. MOST people do not join games like that. MOST people check open games and join a game that interests them, fully expecting to PLAY the game they just spent their points on....NOT have their points tied up in a game because Yellowjacket the asshole joined a game knowing that tomorrow he is going on vacation.

You guys are selfish assholes, period.
krellin (80 DX)
22 Oct 11 UTC
And, JMO...UNLESS you are the last person to join a game, and therefore can OK the pause ahead of time, you WILL be screwing somebody. Further, the likeliehood of getting 6 random people to reply positively to your "Hey, I wanna join your game and then *immediately pause it....is that OK???" question is miniscule. Again....you are clearly a selfish asshole if you think that is acceptable behavior. If you are NOT going to be able to play a game, then do NOT self-indulge and join a game only to screw other people. Are you idiots so self-centered and needy that you MUST be in a game at all times? You seriously can't grasp the concept of NOT joining a game if you can't play it? MOST people join games to PLAY....not pause.

Fucking morons, you guys are...

@Krellin, I'm with you. Pauses aren't given unless I know all 6 players in the game and I trust them. If just one person isn't in my circle then the pause button never get's hit even if a grandmother passes.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

@ Krellin, I was actually considering the games that people organize on the forum and then password protect. These are the only games that many of the pro's play anymore. However, I forgot that your cheery disposition probably keeps you from being invited to any of these games. Furthermore, games with good players that have 24-48 hour phases easily take over a month and I've had games go longer than that. So if someone is only going to be gone for a weekend 3 weeks from now and doesn't want to wait 3 weeks to join any games, then yes I would say asking the other people if they would mind a pause 3 weeks from now would be fine, and if they say no then you simply find more reasonable people to play with. Regardless, if you notice this was only part of my original post. The second half said " but most people do not, and that is where the problems come up." which pretty clearly showed that I am not typically a fan of pauses. But of course you would choose to ignore that part.
@The Czech, that is pretty cold dude, even Krellin is willing to pause for emergencies. There is really no excuse besides being a jerk to not pause for someone who truly needs it especially when the agreed amount of time is stated in the global chat. I've never had an unpause request to the mods take more then a day to be addressed. Are you serious that if someone said "hey...so and so passed away...could everyone pause for the weekend cause I have a funeral to go to" you would say "sorry, no"? I hope that was an exaggeration on your part.

If he was doing it for any game-relevant reason--even something as sort of dickish as trying to draw it out long enough to force someone to go to sleep and CD or something--I'd say yes.

If there was no motive at all and he just didn't feel like making one little extra click...

Yeah, I'd call that bad form and a lack of game etiquette on his part.

If someone cares so much about a game that they are willing to lie about a someone passing to gain a slight advantage with a pause then, whatever, they can have it. I would never play with them again, but I would give it to them.
The Czech (40297 D(S))

@jmo I quit league games because you must give pauses and after a month of pauses the game has lost all it's flavor for me. I play for fun so pausing takes the fun out of the game. I don't play to get the win or draw by not pausing I just have been burned by people who pause then quit the game because they are losing. Look at gameID=63305 It's been pause since late August. Who's being the dick? Those who granted the pause or the 1 who won't hit unpause? That is why I stick to live games with experienced players. They play, as do I, even if they have only one unit.
When reading this thread, all I can think of is that damn Argentina and his silent 10 day retreats and builds.
Dejan0707 (1608 D)

Because of nature of my work I need pause for few days eventually. Its not an easy thing to find a sitter so I prefer pause. I would always prefer pause than NMR (I never had NMR on this site except for one live game when I lost internet in the middle of it).

There is of course people who use pause as a weapon so I understand someone who is angry about it, but please don't punish normal players who are in need of pause because of actions of this few bad guys.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
22 Oct 11 UTC
The Czech: if it's been paused since August, and one guy is turtling, the mods will unpause it, they've done it for me. Pause should never be used as a diplomatic tool, and neither should refusal to unpause... just don't abuse it and respect reasonable and clearly stated pause requests (at least a turn in advance, and clear explanation of reason and time of return) and I really don't see what the problem could be.

If a fleet in Edinburgh is support holding a fleet in the Norwegian Sea, and the fleet in the Norwegian Sea is moving to Norway (to counter a possible move to norway) and the fleet in the Norwegian Sea 1) is bounced out of Norway while 2) a fleet attacks the Norwegian Sea with one other supporting unit, will the fleet in Norwegian Sea be dislodged or not? It's 2 vs. 2 in Norwegian Sea, but the fleet there has a move order, which cannot be executed.
