Going Greek
This is one of my sons first year at UA and he recentyl recieved at bid to a fraternity, but I am hesitant to let him accept it. I didn't get involved with the Greek system when I was a student there and am unsure of how the process works. Does anybody have any experience with the matter?

Russia in gunboat
I find it very hard to play Russia in gunboat. I usually go to GoB, Galicia, Ukraine, Black Sea.

Which openings do you use and what is your strategy usually?
santosh (335 D)
03 Sep 11 UTC
Russia and Austria are terrible in most gunboats that I've played on this site. President Eden had a thread where he claimed Austria was the best country for gunboat - it probably is - if Italy isn't new. It Italy is, then he's going to go for Austria like his life depends on it, in which case Turkey is going to mop up the pieces fairly soon, and there's really nothing you can do about it. With Italy diving into Austria, he keeps building armies, and given Russia's position and the fact that he can easily force himself into BLA, add the fact that eventually one of Germany or Russia is going to come for you invitingly empty StP and Warsaw eventually, and you have one unplayable country. The above is an analysis merely of the gunboat live games on this site, of course.

eek the name errors!
'given Russia's position' ---> 'given Turkey's position'
'one of Germany or Russia' ---> 'one of Germany or England'

I really should read it before I post. Just too lazy to.

Yes, I find Russia to be one of the more difficult powers to play in gunboat. You simply have too many neighbors. The only country, in my opinion, that is worse in gunboat is Germany. To me, drawing Germany in gunboat is almost a sure fire way to get a defeat.

As far as openings go, I generally do the same as you, though sometimes I send Moscow North and leave Gal open.
Lopt (102 D)
03 Sep 11 UTC
The problem I have with leaving Gal open is that most Austrian players I've seen so far will go for Galicia, mostly I guess for a bounce preventing Russia from coming in, but when they do move in you are really quite vulnerable and Turkey might pick that up as an invitation.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))

I've seen some players (and maybe I will try it) next time) that use Warsaw to support Austria into Galicia. It is the only way you can make an obvious attempt to signal that you want an alliance with the Austrian.
Lopt (102 D)

It's an idea worth trying I'd say.

Should Italy btw always try to expand towards France? I saw mentioned that you shouldn't go for Austria, but that leaves little else..?

Turkey, anyone?

I am actually a fan of going after Austria out of the gate as Italy, provided that you have a solid Wintergreen, not a Juggernaut.
ulytau (541 D)

I also hate to draw Russia in gunboat, Austria and Turkey are much better Eastern powers.

As for Russian opening, only GoB is given. The problem is that Germany will bounce you in Sweden and England will convoy to Norway most of the time meaning that you gain nothing in the north and if you wish to sustain the offensive in south, you have to pull the fleet back to StP. The great advantage of Russia, two fronts for quick development, is thus missing and you have one build in 01 and nothing sure in 02. The fact that you are easily disposable in many stalemate lines doesn't help - you can draw if you're big but small Russia will not make it, unlike Germany in Munich or Italy in Tunis.

Italy going after my Austria right out the bat is nasty but most people preffer Lepanto, which is a godsend for Austria and one of the reasons why it's so cool in gunboat.
santosh (335 D)

I like Germany actually. Germany is really nice to play assuming Russia doesn't commit suicide by trying to rush you in the beginning. France can't mount an attack on you unless he deals with England first, or allies with him which is harder in gunboat. (He could build army Brest, but that is just asking for trouble later). And anytime England reaches too far out with fleets, he's going to get a French fleet in the Irish or in NAO. I feel by far the most secure as Germany in most games.

When you do reach a 10 or so center position, you're so close to that line that you can very quickly lock out the south of the map with just 7-armies, which are self-sustaining in terms of centers, leaving three of four units to work on france.

Yea, I think Germany is one of the best countries to go solo as well. One of the last games I played I got beat down and attacked by France and England, but in the end I came back, and got a draw with France against a massive Turkey.
ulytau (541 D)
03 Sep 11 UTC
If you to reffer to the game where I was France... you were the first to take an SC from me, also at the time when I was trying to invade England. You then missed a couple of phases so I rushed to take over your position against Turkey but then you came back and everything was cool :)
Lopt (102 D)
03 Sep 11 UTC
If you view Belgium as your SC then yes, but I owned it from the beginning, so I felt it was not more then fair. Still, good cooperation at the end. I think 1 more year though and I would have attempted the stab, not sure if it would have been succesfull, what do you think?
Lopt (102 D)
03 Sep 11 UTC
Btw, was your NMR on turn 1 intentional?
ulytau (541 D)
03 Sep 11 UTC
Belgium was English and I needed a build for another fleet so I took it. I didn't push further and didn't continue with any hostilities but you wanted it back pretty much :) My NMR wasn't intentional, I forgot about the the beginning and came late back, didn't manage to enter any orders so I had to play tight after that. If you stabbed, you would get only to 17 at best - Moscow, Britain, Brest and Paris so I wasn't afraid of that. Plus you had few armies on my front to try anything like that successfully.
Lopt (102 D)

Well, I mean, Turkey was about to break, I could just stab, hold off and continue on the east.
ulytau (541 D)
03 Sep 11 UTC
He could hold the line at Ven-Tri-Bud-Rum-Sev. I would pull back and everything would be fine - I was going to convoy Brest to London and Mar->Bur actually. I was a little annoyed that Italy survived 2 years longer than he should have :)
Lopt (102 D)

Hah, yea, I was willing to let Italy live and take down Turkey, just to teach him a lesson for post-phoning draw so long..

Really annoying game, France dropped first year and everyone but Germany wants to draw... But instead of everybody attacking Germany they keep fighting there own wars..

Anonymous and no messaging games
Why are they so popular at the moment? I don't see the advantage of being anonymous. And taking away de messaging just makes the game less enjoyable. You can't anymore backstab people that way, and that's the whole point of the game! Can sum1 explain me?

Rugby World Cup
Is actually going to be on network tv in the US. I'm looking forward to watching it.

Anybody have any thoughts on what we should expect? Will anyone knock off the All Blacks on their home turf? Will Ireland stop their downward spiral? Do any darkhorses like the Georgians or the Tongans have a shot to advance past pool play?

Stuff that breaks your game
Tonight I played a good live game, and was one of the leading players a few years in. Then my daughter woke up and had one of those fits that only daddy can woo... :-) I had to leave the game and when I came back my country had hit the slopes.

Let loose the times your game has been broken by outside factors!
