Russia
So, who here has Russia as their favourite country to play? I dislike it a lot but I'd be interested to hear from someone else who likes it.

Japan disaster and Jquery
Here are some amazing before/after pictures that you can move a slider between to compare: http://5z8.info/worm_fqq
It's an amazing view of the damage nature can unleash on us, and also an example of how cool the jquery library really is.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: "What A Piece Of Work Is A Man!" (Well...Wha IS He?)
I've been asking everyone I can all week, partly because I'm starting a new part of the book I'm trying to write, partly because I'm listening to an old lecture series based partly on it, and partly because it's a FUN question--what MAKES a "human being," and what makes you..."you?" Is it just a physical aspect, or is there a soul--and since we change every day, are we the same "person" we were the day before? Are we eternal in any way? What are WE?

Sitter
Hey, I need a sitter, but only for one game. I'm in a live game right now, as Italy, and I'm in a fairly good position. I need to leave really soon, so if anyone could finish that game for me, just let me know in the next few minutes and i'll give you my password.

You need to have faith in people, and isn't that what Diplomacy is all about?
"there is no way he could take crete when he is being attacked by both carthage and Persia...

oh wait he just did
gigantor (404 D)

Not too long ago, somebody mentioned an idea of opening up global press after a gunboat is finished. I like this idea.
this happened at the beginning of the game if i went back and told him how stupid he was later it would just sound vindictive
gigantor (404 D)

And posting about it on the forum isn't...?

Talking about an ongoing gunboat, yadda yadda yadda.
not ongoing for me im dead
☺ (1304 D)
12 Mar 11 UTC
Uhh... It's still ongoing. Don't say anything.
uhh... did i say anything that could possibly influence the game?
☺ (1304 D)
12 Mar 11 UTC
No. Just saying.
so why are you saying?
That's completely irrelevant.

As smileyface once very eloquently said:
Gunboat. stfu.
why does bringing up forum rules that dont even apply to specific situations get you all off so much
completely relevant

you stfu

Don't think I ever said that exactly basvan. But yep. :-)
gigantor (404 D)
12 Mar 11 UTC
I think it's more because someone else might see it and go on to talk about something more relevant to the game, (and quite possibly ruining the game) so we avoid the entire situation in the first place.
Mind processes of our heroes:

"hmm... post... gunboat... ongoing game... I CAN ACT LIKE JADED DOUCHE...
type: Ongoing gunboat yadda yadda yadda... now i look as cool as I hoped"
makes more sense gigantor wont do it again
"Don't think I ever said that exactly basvan".

Maybe I don't remember correctly, but the message was clear as day.

@Santa: The whole point of a gunboat is to not talk. No matter what you say, it is always inappropriate to talk about an ongoing gunboat.
PS. My first name is "bas".
SacredDigits (102 D)
12 Mar 11 UTC
At the time you made the post linking the game, you were still in it.
again did i state anything to influence the game, no, then why did you bring it up
SacredDigits (102 D)
12 Mar 11 UTC
You did.

By referring to a player and their moves as "stupid", you draw the focus of the other players onto said stupid moves if it wasn't there before (because you don't know if they noticed or not). It's an estimation of the ability of a player in an ongoing gunboat game, which could change the way others see said player and thus impact the outcome.
gman314 (100 D)
12 Mar 11 UTC
Whether it affects the game or not is completely irrelevant. It is considered poor etiquette to talk about any ongoing game. Especially a gunboat. When you discuss an ongoing game you don't know when or if someone will post something that does affect the game and so it's best not to bring it up.
☺ (1304 D)

gman, Sacred +1.
scared -1, that made no sense, so what if they see something is stupid? It would have no effect on a game where both other participants are attacking the guy all out already. Ridiculous how you all cannot see past the letter of the law what so ever, cant or refuse to because you get such a kick out of calling people out on it.
I wont do it again for the point gman stated, but I refuse to acknowledge that i did anything to influence the game because i did not.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Mar 11 UTC
Gunboat, stfu. There I said it. I've said it before on other threads repeatedly. It should be everyone's mantra when they see someone talking about an ongoing gunboat.
SacredDigits (102 D)
12 Mar 11 UTC
I dunno about you, but I attack a stupid player in a far different fashion than I attack a player that seems to have a modicum of intelligence.
you all are hopeless
☺ (1304 D)
12 Mar 11 UTC
Santa, out of curiosity, how many members of the community have to tell you you're wrong before you admit it?
i think ive already admitted it?
i refuse to admit i did anything to influence the game, and if 1000 people made up some horse shit scenario where maybe i sorta coulda influenced it I still would disagree.

But relating to not doing this again I wont, I think you are right about the possibility of someone else posting something damaging in here
Ah, so it was Draugnar who voiced those marvellous words before.

No but seriosuly, by making a comment you do influence the game. The whole point of gunboat is that player have very limited knowledge of what the other are up to. By posting in the forum you
- Let others know which country you are playing
- Inform them of your diplomatic relations
- Inform them how you view other players (competent or not)

Now that the game is over it is okay to discuss it. And I have a question. Why did Egypt attack Greece? He was at war with both Carthage and Persia (and it was not going well). Attacking Greece was suicide.
SacredDigits (102 D)
12 Mar 11 UTC
If I had to guess, I'd say he really needed a SC at exactly that moment, and it's somewhat difficult to attack anyone except your direct neighbors in Ancient Med, so he took a risk. Weakening Greece could also convince Persia to head in that direction instead.
id say he was an idiot didnt know what he was doing and screwed the game (though my non order against Rome that turn sure helped
yebellz (729 D(G))
13 Mar 11 UTC
it probably wasn't a smart move by Egypt, but maybe it was just a desperate and ill-advised attempt to survive as Carthage and Persia closed in on him.

Santa, you just got unlucky that a natural Persia, Rome, Carthage 3-way balance formed in an Anc Med game. Even if Egypt had done everything you wanted, there's not much you can do against a 3-way forming in Anc Med.
Perhaps he attacked because he knew you were already stretched for resources and were unable to do anything about it?

Anglo-French Alliance
Let me start off by saying that this idea was not based on any current game that I'm in. Generally speaking, France and England will have a hard time cooperating as allies for an extended period of time. Now it was mentioned to me that an English fleet in Brest would be a good solution to this problem/dilemma. What are your thoughts?

The NFL Owners/Players Negotiations Break Down: Lawsuits Pending, Possibly A Lockout
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/thehuddle/post/2011/03/report-nfl-players-association-applies-for-decertification/1
It doesn't look good for the NFL right now...according to ESPN, lawsuits and lawsuits OVER lawsuits are one the way as the Players and Owners fail to come to terms...it's still early, but this could draw on for a LONG time...my 49ers might be sitting on that 7-9 record for longer than I thought...
