Call it weighted random. You are most likely to get the country you have played least and least likely to get the one you've played most, but that can be affected by what the other players in your game have had in the past as well. The idea is that, over time, you should get an even division amongst all nationalities.

Interesting. Of course, a purely random assignment for each game would also give everyone a (more or less) uniform distribution among countries - given enough games.

Which is pretty close to 1/7 chance you should get over time.

It applies the game to the weightings the moment your assignment is made. Otherwise you might continue to get the same nation over and over.

With a purely random assignment, you could get the same country several times in a row - but it's unlikely. The chance that you'll play the same country twice in a row is 1-in-7 (a 14% chance) and the likelihood of three times in a row is 1-in-49 (a 2% chance).

Or to put it another way, if you were to play three games, and were assigned a country completely at random each time, then you would have a 71% chance of playing three different countries, and a 98% chance of playing at least two different countries.

It used to be pure random. The thing about those odds though is that it only accounts for one person. If you have 100 players then that means 2 of those players are getting the same country 3 times in a row. And we've got a lot more than 100 active players. People complained about it a lot and so Kestas implemented the weighted random.

People still get the same country 3 times in a row, but not as much. Especially if they don't get a country for awhile and it becomes more likely to be gotten then getting it three times in a row becomes just as likely as pure random. But overall, in the long run, it makes it less likely.

After 36 games my numbers for are fairly balanced at - {AEFGIRT} 4, 5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6. However, in my first 10 games, before the Weighted Random was introduced, I played as Turkey 5 times! - {AEFGIRT} 1, 0, 2, 1, 1, 0, 5!

It was my understanding that the Country Assigner only looks at the last x games. Not sure what the number is, but I don't think it looks at all of them.
