Draws having REAL penalties
Since mapleleaf and ava destroyed my original thread by their playground fight, I'm starting a new one. 3 way draws... should they be a 'good' valid end of a game?

Well, I guessed Bask after I kind of wasn't hiding who I was, and Bask decided to turn on me. I should have known Russia was Draug, but I'll be damned if I didn't hope it would be someone with a friendlier disposition to me. Drano, I had a hunch on, and the same thing for the Czech, just based on demeanor.

Either way, here's how my opening went:

I knew I needed to establish myself with Italy and Russia, and I needed to shunt off any potential success Turkey might get, which is why I tried my somewhat ballsy (and guaranteed to piss of everyone around me) open, in which I sort of dicked Russia over (but Draug got a build!), definitely dicked Turkey over, and I bluffed the Anschluss with Italy.

Of course, when Bask found out I bluffed the Anschluss, he wasn't happy, but what's an Austria supposed to do when Germany doesn't talk to him much in the first 24 hours?

Either way, by pitting Russia and Turkey against each other, I tied that front up pretty well. My downfall was in a) not taking Italy all the way out when I had a chance, and b) not turning Russia and Germany against each other. I think my diplomacy started out strong, but waned, which is why I got dicked over in the end (that, and Drauggy's need to crush me at all costs, and Bask's already strong dislike of, shall we say, my "play style".

So, Bask figured out who I was. But he didn't bother to look at my record and see that my top 250 GR has come from draws. I only have one win. Instead he threatened me to get me to ally with him. Big mistake. Had drano not been so strong, I would have taken the fight to him. But then drano would have won. Had he come to me and said "I'm looking for a solid alliance and thought you and France would be a good fit" I would have jumped at it.

After about a year of sitting by but not taking StP, I knew it was Bask and he wouldn't stab. He really needs to mix up his play or he will start finding his allies turning and walking all over him. If I didn't have to worry about drano in the Med. I would have tried to go for the win. But drano had proven himself skilled (I didn't know who he was at that point) and I knew he might not only stop me but Bask might well throw the game to him eventually.

Then Bask indicated he was leaving in a couple of days and would end up CDing. Drano would have won the CD race, so I had to draw.

Okra - you kept stabbing and lying. So on what I figured would be your third time, I decided to play your game against you. I indicated we would give it one more go but never intended to let you have the chance to try again. At the same time I had a much more sane (although the threat at StP was pushing it) player to your north wanting to work with me. Italy was a convenient tool desperate to keep an SC, so I "forgave" his assisting you off the Black Sea that one time and started using his gullibility against him. Look to the late game where we kept bouncing until the time was right to separate his two fleets (divide and conquer) so I could have a superior surrounding force.

Add in your turtling when you were being pressed rather than trying to push back out and the end game became rather easy and boring. The only interesting part of the last year was my stab at Austria to bring me to 14 SCs and keep Bask at 10.

I kept stabbing and lying to *you*, and really, i don't call helping you into Bul while at the same time bouncing you in Rum a "stab". That's just "controlled cultivation". If I'd let you get both, you'd have been a terribly obnoxious thorn in my side. If I hadn't, all three of us -- you, me and Turkey -- would have gotten 1 build each, and there would have been no movement whatsoever, especially since you were forceful in your diplomacy and Turkey gave me NOTHING to go on diplomacy-wise.

So, call it "less sane" or say it was a "stab", but I got you your build, and didn't deny it from you.

Of course, when you started acting like I owed you something, I took advantage of my position. You may look down on stabs and lies, but your diplomacy was not encouraging me to want to work with you at all. In fact, I stopped worrying about Italy just so I could concentrate on you.

I mean, as Austria, I have to either persuade or lie. Germany and Turkey weren't talking to me. You were talking to me, but I didn't like the idea of you in Rumania and Bul, and I didn't trust you to support me into Bul.

As for Italy, he was the only one I was able to talk to much at all, and to trust to a degree. Of course, I don't think my open left him encouraged.

Spring 1901:
Austria wants to be an ally with me, and said he is going with the Anschluss. I've never heard of it before, so I googled it up and liked it. Talking to Italy, Russia and England worked out pretty well. The first worrying sign was when Austria tried to move to Venice. On the better side, Russia didn't open towards Germany, meaning I was facing an experienced player.

Autumn 1901:
France and I began our war. He was tipped (or told he was tipped) from a lot of various sources that I am going to attack him, and tried to head for Munich. I've gained England's trust by temporarily delaying Russia, and making sure neither of them is too strong for the other. Belgium and Rumania still open, Austria making a nice move and supporting Russia to Bulgaria.

Spring 1902:
It looks like England and France are allied against me. I could not allow them to control NS, so I bounced London in NS and Burgundy at Belgium, allowing Russia to get to Sweden, to make sure he fights England. Austria behaves strange, jumping from Russia to Turkey to Italy, so he gets a mark of someone to be treated with distrust.

Autumn 1902:
Talking to France about attacking England plus the fact that Austria wasn't so friendly towards Italy brought the fruits - France headed towards England and I could enter the NS.

Spring 1903:
Helping Russia to hold on, I've invaded England and tried to bounce the move I feared most - Piedmont to Tyrolia. It didn't happen and I found myself in Tyrolia, took Belgium, Edinburgh and Venice. The way I took Venice is that Austria offered a stab against Italy, and I needed the builds.

Autumn 1903:
Four builds: Belgium, Edinburgh, Norway and Venice. Bouncing France in Liverpool made him angry, but made sure he won't advance too fast. After EXTENSIVE and INTENSIVE negotiation that lasted more or less 72 hours of non-stop arguments and counter-arguments, he built an army in Marseilles. Both of us knew, however, that we cannot trust each other at this point.

Spring 1904:
France makes his move against me, going for Burgundy. London is being recaptured by the English. Austria stabs (again!) Russia and takes Rumania. Knowing that, I am letting them fight while I deal with England and France.

Autumn 1904:
England asks as a final word to try to stop Yorkshire. I agree, but it does not help England. The negotiation with France continues... Meanwhile, war rages between Austria and Russia. It is only a matter of time now until either one of the wins, or both of them turn on me...

Spring 1905:
Bad luck for France. After extensive negotiation, once again both of us do something completely different from what we agreed upon. Ruhr was not mentioned even once in the negotiations, so I knew France will want to surprise me and enter Ruhr. I took the bet and countered it. Another successful bet was the move to Clyde. I now had England. France has began to talk differently, and we agree that it is in our best interest to really cooperate. (some clever diplomacy on France side here...)

Except a little stab by Russia in 1904 or 1905 that was due to some misunderstanding (or so he says), everything goes pretty smooth. I am talking a lot both to France and Russia, knowing that Russia is mad at me due to me taking Norway at 1906. I explain to him that it was done to enforce his cooperation, and we enter into a "carrot" vs "stick" type of discussion... I am keeping St.Pet clean, knowing that once he will take Austria, we can get a 3-way draw. He will be much more powerful then, but I know that I have the option to give the game to France if Russia moves against me, and use it against Russia.

In 1909 Russia indeed turns against me, but now France and Russia have heard about the 3-way draw for too long. I indeed promise Russia that if he does not draw when Italy is gone, I am giving the game to France (something you cannot do in a PPSC game...)

It works. Game drawn.

About "metagaming" in this game:

Seeing that Austria stabbed like crazy, I figured out it was FOB or pitterwiggin. Then I noticed the use of "--" sign and I saw that only FOB uses it. After he began to quote presidents, I was 100% sure it was FOB. I knew that he opened the "Virtuous Diplomacy" thread and wanted to prove a point, so I had to eliminate him when the first chance occurs.

I was pretty sure England was The Czech - because he mentioned chainsaw diplomacy. What made me a little confused was the times he and drano019 appeared on the forum and the time messages were sent.

I was 100% Russia was Draugnar - he always used 'd and talked about his Blackberry.

Turkey went out too quick, and I didn't know who he is. Not knowing about the 7th player (it wasn't in the original thread), I couldn't deduce who is France and Italy. Even if I knew, I didn't talk to both players before, and didn't guess who they were.

So yes, "metagaming" was part of this game - as it is part of any other game...
FriedOkraBlues (100 D)
19 Sep 10 UTC
For the record, I didn't "stab like crazy" -- I stabbed Russia once. The first time, I supported him for the build and blocked his move to Rum -- not technically a stab, but like I said before, "controlled growth".

I never had any agreement with Italy, so there was no stab there.

I behaved erratically, but only in respect to bouncing back and forth between Russia and Italy. Bask, have you ever played Austria? Sometimes you have to behave erratically to prevent your neighbors from guessing your next move.

Or, of course, you could have a black & white mind like yours and just automatically assume I'm not trustworthy.
Baskineli (100 D(B))
19 Sep 10 UTC
Here we go again... Making assumptions that has nothing to do with the reality...

Yes, I played Austria - in fact, this is the country I played most. I am telling how it looked from my side, just read and learn what you can for the next time we meet. I think that behaving erratically is exactly the thing that made everybody to turn against you. When you stabbed/attacked Italy and Russia, I knew it was time for me to act - which I did.

I did not assume you are not trustworthy - you've proven it to me when you moved to Venice. Up until that point, I did not know whether you will turn upon me or not, and you proved that given the chance - you will.

And please, stop making this comments about me, my way of playing or my "black & white mind". Fact is that I displayed good diplomacy and made it to the draw, while your game made you lose. If you really want to comment, comment about the game and not my personality - as you perceive it.

Bask, if you go back to your press, which may not be available, you'll see I asked you if I could go to Venice so I could get into Southern Italy, AND YOU NEVER RESPONDED.

So clearly you either had an ulterior motive and that's just a bullshit excuse, OR you just don't pay attention.

You clearly had an axe to grind the whole game, since you talked to me maybe 6 times total.
Baskineli (100 D(B))
19 Sep 10 UTC
Well, actually no. We had a great and very extensive (tens of messages) communication up until Autumn 1904, and I quote your message:

"Sorry about the Ven thing. I hadn't talked to you about whether or not i could move to ven to get further south."

Then I stabbed you, and your message to me was:
"I would have respected you for a stab. I have no respect for a stab that takes one territory. Preparre to get devoured."

I did not see any reason in talking to you after this message.

Look, FOB. Diplomacy is about manipulating people and learning from them. Draugnar has taught me a lesson in this game, and I am thankful for it. Why won't you stop being so bitter and use this kind of language, and start acting like a... you know, diplomat?
FriedOkraBlues (100 D)
19 Sep 10 UTC
From Germany to me:

"Autumn, 1904: Venice is not a problem, it is totally understood. In fact, it is good that you did so, because if I would go to Apulia, you could bump Rome there, so I actually have to thank you for this move.

How do you think I should attack Russia, except Galicia to Warsaw? We need to do a quick and decisive blow there. I think that Ukraine is the key for Russia - you can't get there now, but how about in Spring 1905?"

Argument: Destroyed. You didn't consider Ven a stab either, until it became convenient post-game to paint me as untrustworthy, and you lied your ass off in-game.

Seriously guys, you two need to just live and let live!

Now, on to the game. Overall, I think it was a well played game, with the only glitch being that Turkey left a turn or 2 before he was destroyed. He was going to die anyways, so that didn't matter, but it may have had a slight effect on game play. All in all, it was one of the best played games I've been in in terms of keeping the game moving and having players who stick around.

Now, on to a turn by turn analysis:

Spring 1901: Like usual, I opened up diplomatic channels intensely with everyone except Russia and Turkey. With England, I made a deal to break through German lines as he expressed a strong interest in the E/F. With Germany, I made a tentative deal to strike at England, but not until 1902ish after we picked up our builds. My main beef with Germany at this time was him trying to be a fear-mongerer. Many of Baskineli’s messages centered around how I should fear the English invasion of Picardy in Fall 1901. I rebuffed him by reminding him that in the face of a F/G attack, England would be hard pressed to defend, let alone strike at mainland Europe. This pacified him for now, but made me wary of his motives. I also didn’t like his whole aggressive “puppet-master” tone where upon he was basically trying to tell me what to do right from the start. With Italy, we struck up an early DMZ of basically the whole Mediterranean and Piedmont. After he told me that Germany wanted him to move to Piedmont (not sure if this is really true or not), I became even more wary of Germany’s intentions. With Austria, we discussed overall strategy and just had a general understanding that we’d share intel.

Summary: Alliance with England looks likely due to Germany’s attitude and attempt at being the “puppet-master”.

Fall 1901: Negotiations heat up. While talking to England, I propose a plan to royally screw Germany that would have changed the course of the game. I proposed NTH – Holland and convoying to Norway with no support. It was a risky maneuver, but if England had agreed to it, he would have still received his +1 from Norway while limiting Germany to 1 build as well. With units in Holland/Burgundy and builds to come, we would have had Germany gone VERY quickly. Regarding Germany, he was silent to me. For the whole turn. This only reinforced my decision to strike at Germany ASAP. Thinking that England was going to take Belgium, I struck at Munich in case Germany moved to Ruhr so he could build in Munich. It failed, but I was still left with 2 builds and a defensive army in Burgundy. With Italy, I sealed up our DMZs even more and made solid peace on my southern border, something that proved crucial in my success later.

Winter 1901: Builds: F Brest, A Paris
These builds were agreed to with England in order to bring pause to people talking about a E/F alliance. F Brest was to make people think E/F war was going on while really being used against Germany.

Spring 1902: Discussions with Germany are renewed. “Plans to strike at England are in the works but at this time, I have no intention of carrying them out. Germany also tells me that England is moving to EC (a lie fed to him by England and forwarded to me) meaning I know I can use England’s press as a lever against Germany since I’m being informed about what’s going on between them. Germany again does his “fear-mongering” tactic with this quote:

“I don't want England to overrun both you and me”.

He’s trying to make me afraid that England alone can take out both Germany AND France who outnumber him in units 10 – 4. This only reinforced my decision to strike Germany. With England, we make plans to move on Denmark and Belgium in the fall.

Fall 1902: Here’s where things get interesting. I took a huge gamble by changing the direction of the game. I knew that if I stuck with England, I’d be getting nothing anytime soon. Germany had me blockaded on land and England couldn’t help because he was busy with Russia. So, I stuck my neck out and went with Germany despite my misgivings. It turned out to be worth it. England was apparently worried about me anyways with his move of Lon – Wales (not really sure what that accomplished though) instead of Lon – NTH. That allowed me to get into EC and Irish Sea and set up an assault on England. Giving Germany Belgium was a surprise to him since I told him I was going to bounce him this year. Also, at this time, my relationship with Italy was sealed as I was afraid of him moving Tyrr – GoL, Ionian – Tunis, Tuscany – Piedmont. He didn’t, and so my move to Piedmont was a waste.

Winter 1902: No builds for me. Working on plans with Germany.

Spring 1903: Moves to Wales to set up the strike at London and Liverpool in the fall to crush England. Plans going well with Germany…….so far.

Fall 1903: Germany bounces me in Liverpool. This PISSED ME OFF. Big time. He claimed it was “defensive measures”, but blocked an ally who you agreed to let have an SC is not cool. Despite this, I should have realized that from his other moves, he wasn’t looking at me as a target.

Winter 1903: This is where Bask and I started having problems. I built A Marseilles for the sole purpose of making sure my land defenses were 100% solid. Baskineli didn’t like that, but he was asking me to leave my land defenses vulnerable while also starting a war with Italy, not something I wanted to do. So instead, I opened up comm with Austria about a potential war with Germany to see what he was thinking.

Spring 1904: Germany and I start heating up. I take Burgundy to ensure my defensive line, while he looks to be setting up for a strike in the south and north simultaneously. England retakes London which forces me to move Yorkshire back south unfortunately.

Fall 1904: I retake London and hold Liverpool. I also attempt a preemptive strike against Munich as Bask and I were still diploming at this time. Despite that, we both did things we shouldn’t have if we were allies. Me, going to Munich. Him, attacking Yorkshire as that could have prevented me from taking London back if I attacked with EC instead of York. Also at this time, Bask has started making repeated references to how he does not want to fight me at all, thus giving me solid reason to believe I know who I’m fighting.

Winter 1904: Build F Brest, and the war is on!

Spring 1905: The Spring of eternal negotiations! Germany and I had an approximately 48 hour intense negotiation period spanning Fall/Winter 1904 and Spring 1905. It was the single most intense phase I’ve ever had, and to be honest, it was completely useless. We were both giving reasons for what we were doing and neither of us was listening to the other. We both had some pretty damn good arguments too. In the end, we both did almost nothing that we had agreed on, and Bask outguessed me with Norwegian – Clyde and supporting himself to Ruhr. He had the upper hand big time and we both knew it.

Fall 1905: More epic diplomacizing begins. This time, I’m courting Italy and Austria and attempting to set up a “little guys” alliance. At the same time, I’m trying to convince Germany to play nice, but I don’t really expect that to happen. Moves with Germany were carefully coordinated and I took the leap of faith and hoped that he wouldn’t just continue on and crush me. I don’t know how much Italy believed of my words after I abandoned Burgundy, but at least for another year, we were still in communication for a large period of time.

Winter 1905: Disbanded NAO after both Italy and Germany agreeing it was best. Still undecided on which way to go, as I could have gone after Germany with Italian help still.

Spring 1906: STILL undecided. Once again, moves were coordinated with Germany to make a fake war, while moves down south were coordinated with Italy to make it seem like I wanted in on Venice. Italy’s move to W. Med didn’t worry me since he would have moved to GoL as well if he was attacking me.

Fall 1906: The decision is made. I successfully convinced Italy to let me have Venice for a turn or 2 to attack Germany and then reneged on the deal. Combined with Germany letting me have Belgium so I could build a fleet to take on Italy, I was finally 100% sure I was going to survive and be part of a draw at least.

Winter 1906: Build F Marseilles and the Italian war is on.

1907: Positioning to take out Tunis and Tyrrhenian Sea is begun. With Germany not pressing the attack on Russia and deciding to keep Russia on our side by self-bouncing in St. Pete, I knew a 3 way draw was pretty much for sure now. If Germany had attacked Russia, it would have become a 5 way draw with F/G vs A/I/R and I would have been stymied in the Mediterranean.

1908: Tunis falls and the game is basically over. Mop up Italy time and draw the game.

Overall impressions of players:

The Czech (England): Wanted to be my ally and I wanted to be his ally. Alas, him not taking the gamble put me in a position to not grow at all unless I fought him so unfortunately, I had to. Didn’t have much comm. After 1902 at all.

Jamiet99uk (Turkey): Barely any comm. Unfortunately NMRed once in Spring 1902 that changed the dynamic in SE part of the map a little and then had to leave. Thankfully he was almost out anyways and it didn’t really affect the outcome much.

FOB (Austria): A ballsy player this game. To be honest, I wouldn’t have done what he did, as I’ve had success with Austria in other ways, but I have to respect the attitude he went in with. He decided to make Turkey/Russia fight, and despite pissing off Russia which in the end was is downfall, he achieved his objective and got Turkey taken out by Russia.

Peterwiggin (Italy): Good, solid player that stuck in there even when he was being hit by Germany and Austria combined. Made a successful comeback and was a good person to talk to all game. Unfortunately for him, my choice to attack him paid off for me, but I like to think that it was mostly due to me fooling him : )

Draugnar (Russia): Didn’t have much interaction in the early game. Would have liked to have a lot more F/R discussion but that’s partly my fault too. Was obviously a good talker as he convinced Baskineli to hold off on the Russian attack for a long time up north even though Bask was doing nothing elsewhere really. Didn’t really know that Bask was being so forceful with him about St. Pete, so I’m kinda glad he took Vienna at the end to teach Bask a lesson : )

Baskineli (Germany): My ally and enemy. Played a good game. Tactically, he outguessed me on a key turn and took the upper hand. If I were him, I would have gutted me and taken my SCs and ensured himself a western stalemate line. However, it still would have been a draw most likely, so I guess he chose another way that was just as effective. However, diplomatically, he had some faults this game. His fear mongering early on was pretty much the sole reason I decided to ally with England in 1901. Also, he was apparently too heavy-handed with Draugnar later in the game and learned a little lesson from that too. Overall a solid player, and I had some great communication with him, I think he has a little improvement to do on adapting his style of communication to fit the situation though.

So sorry for the book all, hope it’s a good read!

What do my results say about me?
I was just analyzing my WebDiplomacy results and came to the stunning conclusion that I rock at being France (4 wins in 8 games) and Turkey (3 wins in 8 games), I very much suck at being Russia (1 draw, 5 losses). Italy is a strange case without any wins, but also without any losses. I mostly play gunboats by the way.
Does it say anything about me as a player? How can I improve my Russia game?

P.S. My complete game stats are on my profile.
