I don't agree with that, the US is on the downfall. The economy is busting and we are pulling military out of other countries and starting to worry about itself. If you ask me, I think that the near-future superpower is either China, India, or Brazil.

I plan to take over the world by 2013, looks like we will have to compete.

but again, in asia, the Indian sphere of influence is effect by China. The Chinese sphere of influence is affected by both India and japan, so you never know
however, The indian-Japanese-Chinese relationship is getting better, so they might even forget about their past and form an alliance

Didn't finish my thought- the US is also on a boom and bust pattern this bust has been quite bad, but still not as bad as it could have been and we(the US) has been due for a bigger recession/depression for a while. Not to mention Alan Greenspan sort of let the market get out of control on his watch and f'ed up the world economically. China is also on a boom and bust method of growth, they've been growing at a fairly large rate of 9% a year in economic growth. which is going to be hard to keep up. They are one of the very big economies in the world, they will pass the US as the largest however they will experience the same problems and they could quite possibly be bigger and worse.

@benguin: an Indian Japanese Chinese alliance? I can just about imagine an Indo-Japanese alliance on a your-enemy-is-my-enemy basis but there is no way would China ally with either of them. Stop inhaling and join the real world again.

-Myself from the future time-traveled back and, among other things, taught me special techniques that have given me god-like telepathic powers.
-I have been practicing and have all the information I need to put myself on the top. The wheels of global domination and espionage are already in motion! bwahahaha
-Once I am ruler of the world, I will fund the building of a time-machine that will take me back in time and teach myself those special meditation techniques.
-I will also use the time-machine to do massive metagaming (the mods said it was not against the rules if time-machines were involved).

@Cyrano - as a long time Cincinnatian I must disagree. If you are going to pick an existing city then Paris, Rome, Moscow, New York, or LA. If we are dealing with a world in which there is a space-time rift opening up, then Cardiff is the only place to be.

I like the orbiting city ideal. Just be sure to arm it with a brilliant pebble (for large targets a brilliant stone) to punish anyone who would be so foolish to defy you.
