Lost
So I just started watching Lost. I'm watching them all online on Hulu. So far I'm only through season one, so please no spoilers. What I don't get, is what is the big deal? Why is everyone SO obsessed? Yeah, it's a good show. Perhaps one of the better ones. Among the shows I watch, I'd consider it average to above average, so what is it that makes people so interested?

Which country in the World Map variant is the best?
So I’m a big fan of the World Map variation, and a while back I took statistics on past games to see which countries are good to play and which aren’t.

The idea that the France is a "militarily weak country" is absurd. Start off reading this: http://www.cracked.com/article_18409_the-5-most-statistically-full-shit-national-stereotypes.html. And then contemplate the striking neo-colonialism France practices in Africa.

JECE:

You have no idea how much Alsace-Lorraine dominated French political thinking.... effectively, it was the only issue that every party of the rather faction-ridden Third Republic could agree on... that it would again be French. Germany did ask for France's intentions, and got the only nebulous reply that France would act according to its interests... which basically meant they were going to enter the war.

Chamois: In particular, Marshal Foch was a prime proponent of Rhineland annexation. Clemenceau quickly figured out that pushing for outright annexation wouldn't bear any fruit at the conference, due to American and British opposition. However, just because he decided to push for French concessions elsewhere doesn't mean it wasn't on the minds of Frenchmen at the time (particularly on the Right, for obvious reasons).

Margaret MacMillan wrote an excellent book on the Paris Peace conference, entitled Paris:1919, which I recommend to anybody looking to learn more about this period.

Not that this is anti-French in any way.... ;)

Jack_Klein: Yes, Germany was right to invade France. That is now largely unquestioned. But sure, if you say Alsace-Lorraine was that important then maybe it was. The fact that all parties agreed isn't any proof, though. All Argentine partines claim the Malvinas and all Spanish parties claim Gibraltar. That doesn't meant these issues dominate the relations between these two countries and the United Kingdom. Although they are important, other factors bear great weight. For France in W. W. I, the situation of Russia was vital to its strategic position in Europe.

Wait, why was Germany right to invade France? As for territorial disputes, most countries have moved on from arguing over small pieces of land, the consequences would far out weigh the positive results (though Argentina didn't learn its lesson, but there is oil there, so...). If Spain attacked Gibraltar, even if they took the land, they would get raped the British, and they would lose a lot of trade. Alsace and Lorraine had been part of France for quite a while, and the land was valuable. They formed a large part of French thinking, only the extreme left parties wouldn't have cared about it.

Also Jack Klein: France started the Franco-Prussian War, but they were goaded into doing it by Bismark, who tampered with communications between the two countries.

@JECE "Yes, Germany was right to invade France. That is now largely unquestioned."

I hope that you mean "right" in the sense of logical strategy for fighting war against a French-Russian alliance?

Otherwise, I question it. The invasion of any country for economic, political or territorial gain is wrong. Action for humanitarian reasons may be acceptable but needs a very strong case (not the kind of excuse Hitler used for annexing the Sudetenland).
Jack_Klein (897 D)

Largeham: Irrelevant, really. If I call you an asshole, and then you pull out a gun and start shooting me, I don't think it becomes my fault that you're aggressive.

The French declared war, and then got their shit pushed in. Fact.

I think he meant "right" as synonymous with "correct". Considering the geopolitical conditions, Germany didn't have much other option than to fight France in 1914... because if they tried to fight just Russia with Austria, France would backdoor them in short order... both for reasons of national interest and reasons of their alliance.

@Jack Klein: which presumes that Germany was right to start a war with Russia. I do not think that they were.
largeham (149 D)

What Germany did to France was a bit more serious than you calling me an asshole. And France declared war because they were bound to by their alliance with Russia. Strategically they were correct to attack France, but not morally/ethically/etc. It is therefore likely that Britain would have declared war on Germany even without the invasion of Belgium. Germany's naval capacity was growing, and Britain didn't want its hegemony removed.
