How you do propose a draw?
I believe the game "Free Conquest" is drawn, as Turkey controls 17, but the other players have set up a stalemate line.

How can we propose/vote on this?

Hi if a fleet convoying an army with support from x units (other than the one being convoyed) is attacked by x enemy units, the convoy should still go through right ?

Support move question
Given the following situation:
Eng S Bre
Bre S Pic - Par
Pic - Par
(Enemy) Gas - Bre

Does this cut the support from Brest?
Can you cut any support moves regardless of the number of support holds this unit gets?

I just had this situation in the game

and I actually expected to get Paris.

Strange Posts
in the following game: http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4677

I took over Germany and when looking through the conversation with england there was never any asking for an alliance, no actual conversation. They merely state their orders. Is this usual?

Retreats and build phases count for going CD?
How long does it take to go CD?

I am playing a game (http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5064) where France didn't play for 3 days now (he didn't answer any messages either) , but he has not go CD yet, so there is no opportunity for other people to take it (he still has 5 sc's, and could have 6 or 7 had he played).
The phases of these 3 days were Autumn, Retreats and Builds 1904 phases. He has been attacked and has lost a sc, but as he has not retreated, he has nothing to build and so he has the sign of "completed orders" from scratch on that phase.

As in that game England was CD almost from scratch, Germany has all the opportunities to grow, and so, I was forced to move into him too early, which is not so good strategically.

I wonder if retreats and builds count for going CD, and if they do, what happens if the country have no orders to enter. I suggest that even when there are no orders to enter, the player should say "Ok" or something, so he can be counted as a step to go CD if he doesn't.

What do you say?

Obligations of the Player
Recently I've noticed this trend in the forums where I suppose there was some discussion earlier where a majority (or a distinct camp at least) was formed under the agreement that "if a player has an opportunity to undoubtedly win a game, s/he must do so." Please discuss.

Convoys involving the Black Sea
I've noticed that the Black Sea has some strange convoy options, particularly when convoying from Bulgaria. It says that I could conceivably convoy an army from Bulgaria to Greece or Smyrna when there is a fleet in the Aegean Sea; when there is also a fleet in the Ionian it presents the options of Albania, Apulia, Naples, and Tunis.

While those other fleets could legally perform the convoy, they should not appear on the list of possible convoy destinations for the Black Sea fleet.

This bizarre property of convoys involving the Black Sea fleet seems to only apply when the convoy is initiated out of Constantinople or Bulgaria; convoys starting from elsewhere along the Black Sea coast are only shown as convoyable to other territories along the Black Sea.

Is there some way this glitch could be fixed? I imagine a similarly confusing situation exists in the Heligoland Bight-North Sea-Skagerrak-Sweden-Baltic Sea-Denmark region as well as perhaps aroung Saint Petersburg with its two coastlines.

Multi-Accounting accusation
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5053
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5041

I accuse Tohr and GrandeBiller of multi-accounting, and suspect that the other five players in both of these games are also run by the same person. It seems that GrandeBiller has been creating games (and players) to give his account a higher win rate, to win points, and to screw with other games.

The two players are now together in nine games, seven of which are still going and some of which are with legitimate other players.

Can we ban these accounts and restart some of the games they are in? It's a real bother to deal with cheaters in a Diplomacy game, particularly when they are assigned neighboring countries as they are in http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5115 (France/Germany). If you're in another affected game, go ahead and post to reply with YOUR thoughts.

It's further suspicious when in that last-mentioned game the two players are the only two to have finalized orders, and they both did it within minutes of each other. Currently no player on the board has had any communication with them (except for possibly them with each other).

possible multi-account/metagaming?
this game makes no sense
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5011
i took over a CD england in spring of 1904. i am able to make a move or two without anything happening. after I take some centers from russia, russia, turkey, and italy all ally against me. Turkey is clearly able to take numerous amounts of supply centers from either one, but he is just moving around them to get at me. and i was nowhere near harming turkey or winning the game. Anyone's opinion?

Why do people muti-account?
What is the point? If you have to win by cheating you must be a very bad player. I've seen players like this when playing face to face games, they are like little kids that cannot stand to lose. Why even play if you cannot stomic to lose.
mps247 (100 D)
19 Aug 08 UTC
I think that for some people the end justifies the means. I can't work out their motivation for it though. Perhaps it is the challenge of cheating for as long as possible without getting caught that gives them a buzz.

What do you mean by cheating in face-to-face games? Do you just mean their attitude rather than them actually cheating? Could you give me an example?

I agree, I dont' really understand the motivation. You haven't really accomplished anything by cheating, and getting more points is kind of pointless since... well what do points really get you except the opportunity to cheat more? With people more likely to see through your ruse? Who knows. But people do seem to do it.

I too would like to hear about people cheating in face to face games, I can't really see how you could do that...
thewonderllama (100 D)

Actually, cheating (at least some kinds of it) are allowed in face to face. Nothing like playing as two people though. There's an interesting article by Allan Calhamer about this: http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/resources/calhamer/militaryintelligence.htm.
flashman (2274 D(G))

There are quite a few ways to influence face-to-face games that bend the rules and definitely some ways to cheat. Difficult to pull off repeatedly though.

"Military Intelligence"
by Allan B. Calhamer

Any tactic based on deception is legitimate in Diplomacy. If the deception is exposed, the situation must be returned to that within the rules, unless the game has gone on to such a point that this return would be impractical. Thus if extra pieces are slipped onto the board ("Flying Dutchmen" -- so named because the tactic was first tried by a player of Germany) they must be taken off once the deception is noticed; but the damage they may have done in the intervening moves may not be undone.

If you note that a player has more pieces than he is entitled to, stop and think -- if his added strength works in your favor, do not expose him. If and when it begins to work against you, expose him after a set of orders has been read (when he is no longer entitled to change his orders, because he has seen the orders of another player); his piece must come off at once, and his orders may have relied heavily on it. Demanding that your ally show you his orders is a common tactic, but he may show you one set of orders, and turn in another.

A standard tactic is peeking as another player writes his moves ("military intelligence'"). Once I was playing Italy and had alliances with Turkey and Austria-Hungary under the terms of which the Adriatic, Ionian, and Aegean seas were to be kept free of fleets. Thus secured I occupied Tunis on the second move, raised a fleet, and attacked the French in Marseilles and Spain. I could make no headway against the French, so we signed a treaty; I pulled my fleets back, and France subsequently sent her armies north. It was now necessary for me to look east for expansion.

Relying on our alliance, Turkey had attacked Russia in the Black Sea area. Germany had come down on A.-H. with armies, occupying Vienna. This crippled A.-H., without really giving Germany much strength, because her southern armies could not co-operate with her fleets. Therefore the area was "Balkanized" and was a good prospect for expansion. I threw my fleets into the neutralized seas. With the Turkish navy tied up in the Black Sea, I was able to capture Greece by attacking from the Aegean with support from the Ionian. Germany, hoping for support in the area, supported my army into Trieste.

My armies were now deployed thus: 2. Trieste, 1. Venice, 3. Rome. Rather than attack a supply center on the following move, I chose the mobilizing moves 2. Albania, 1. Trieste, 3. Venice, which would give me the largest military force - three armies - between the Adriatic and the Black Seas.

When the time came to read these moves, however, I couldn't find them. A lengthy search failed to produce them. It seems Turkey and A.-H. had quietly taken them. As we were playing in a laboratory engaged in defense work (strictly on our own time - it was about 10:30 p.m.), there were padlocked waste baskets around, intended "for classified waste only". My orders to my armies and fleets were at the bottom of one of these baskets.

As I had not gotten orders through to my units, they stood in place instead of moving. Fortunately, the interception of these orders ("by an Austrian spy") had not been coordinated with an attack on my positions. I was able to carry out my shift to the east side of the Adriatic on the following move. I swept through the disorganized Balkan area and had acquired 13 units, with a demonstrable win of three more by the end of the game.

Ah, that is interesting. Thank you thewonderllama and Feckless. I think that cheating face-to-face seems a lot harder than doing it online. Cheating in face-to-face games doesn't seem to be as... annoying.
Chrispminis (916 D)
19 Aug 08 UTC
Haha, when I played face to face diplomacy it was over longer periods of time, with diplomacy happening haphazardly throughout the day. The most common type of "cheating" was enlisting friends to eavesdrop on diplomatic conversations that happened between classes and such. I also tried calling someone from a payphone and pretending I was someone else and tried to get information, but my impression of the other person wasn't good enough and the person on the other end recognized me. =D
I was hoping to get a chance when someone forgot to sign out of MSN on their computer. I believe someone else also tried to leave fake orders lying somewhere for someone else to find, but they never even noticed it! So the ploy didn't really work.

I can quite understand it

After we moved to the points system you had to have points to play with decent players. Playing down at the 25 point entry games with complete newbies is really no fun.

So - at least in my case - there is a huge temptation to multi account so you can get the points to play with better players. I haven't done it - but lots of others have. I am currently playing in only 1 game. it cost 101 points to join. Those are very precious points to me and yet I have seen i think 3 guys join as England and then go straight away into CD - thta's crazy and they can only do it because of them playing the system - so why shouldn't I so I can get out of these low stakes games?
warsprite (152 D)
19 Aug 08 UTC
In face to face games I was referring to the attitude of not being able lose to a player that had a better game plan, or just was lucky. I would rather lose to a better player that did a better job than cheat. I see it as more of challange. Most any body can cheat and win if there not caught. That's not to say stretching the rules etc, are out. Without some basic rules that everybody fallows you get total caos.

Question on retreats
Dumb question time

When a unit is forced to retreat is "Disband" always an available option? The rules seem to suggest that it should not be. I need to know for one of my games and I have no idea since, as far as I recall, every retreat I have had on this site has also been a forced disband.

Will someone please take over this CD France??
Myself (England) and Russia have been battling against France and Italy for most of the game. Now, after we have made some advances, France has went CD and Italy is just going to end the game by taking France's SCs. Can someone please join this game to prevent Italy from winning? I will move out of Brest and enter in an alliance with the new France against Italy.
