Briggs-Meyers vs Diplomacy Statistics
Just wondering if anyone has ever done a statistical analysis of won-loss records for a given country against the personality archetypes of those playing said country.

lack of armies in f2f
i don't get to play face to face games very often, but the last times i did, i noticed that in the board game version (at least the one we played), there is only a limited amount of armies and fleets for every power, namely nine fleets and nine armies. the rulebook suggests (if i remember correctly) that if you run out of armies (or fleets, but that is unlikely) that you have to use fleets instead, which strikes me as a really odd concept. am i missing something? or how do you all handle this?

Sincere Question
Guys, Abgemacht posted in the Bible Verses thread to ask me if I think I am some sort of eProphet. He and I have both noticed that this thread, unlike the previous Daily Bible Reading thread, has very few posts except for my one daily post.

Are the some who want to learn to trade equities?
If there are novices out there that are interested in learning options trading for themselves, check out what these guys are doing...http://dough.com

they are taking the jargon out any replacing things with probability

I took a quick look at it...let me stress that this is for novices. Like never took a financial course novice. They call it a disruptive technology, and it is - bringing millions of people who would never otherwise trade and bringing them into the market. But its not going to teach you how the market works, really.

Stick with Fidelity or whatever money managing firm you use. In other news, I'm pissed off. I had to create a portfolio last week for my class. Its gained 6.5% in a week. Wish I had done the buys in real life.

That's not true. There are reasons to have professionals manage money, but there are also reason to be proactive and learn things on your own. These guys are about to revolutionize trading, for a younger generation. Never put all your eggs in a basket is the montra to live by,but being self aware of how the intricacies of market action can give you more perspective

Market mechanics is what you will learn. These are professional traders doing the teaching, not some CNBC cheerleaders
Like I said, for people who want to just dip their feet into it for the first time and for younger people, this is good. Not too intimidating, and as an easy to understand UI. It'll teach you things like "hey its good to diversify" or "these things called options exist" but not how they are priced or other fundamentals.

This is not something that I would trust to teach you market mechanics. The very fact that they talk about "probability" of gains with trades shows that I would not trust them at all. The very first thing you learn in an investments class is that you cannot predict the market. Also, this doesn't come close to touching the scale or scope of professional market tracking systems, such as Bloomberg or Thompson ONE.

its obvious that you are a teacher and not a professional, hence creating a portfolio in class watching it appreciate and then in hind sight going"i should have done that"..when you step up to the plate and actually put your hard earned money on the line then you can talk....i do this for a living for the last 25 years....these guys are teaching opions trading so young people can learn to midigate risk

this is not about market analytics...this is learning to trade options on single stocks and ETF's

As we both know education is the key to success in the future, there is a place for this to be taught in school, teach about diversification, allocate monies over different sectors of the market. that is good investment advice...but learning the nuances of the market takes dedication and action...there is more to investing the just buying stocks and bonds
Well, I'm actually an undergrad student, so I don't have money to actually put into the market. Hence, the "I wish I would've done that in real life" is more of a "I wish I had the money to do that in real life"

The last portfolio I created was in high school, again, for a class. It didn't do so hot, but that's because it was 2008-2009.

And you do it for a living? What firm do you work for? And why do you not use Bloomberg or Thompson?
There is more to investing than just stocks and bonds, but you also have to realize that in taking out an option you're almost guaranteed to lose on it 50% of the time. Futures aren't quite as risky, but you can also get burned harder on them than on options.

Does this teach you how to create zero beta portfolios? Or how to follow an arbitrage strategy? Or what about momentum strategies? Cash flow analysis?

those were tough time for most people, but there were some who made fortunes in that time, both on the way down and the way back up..the people who run that site have a combined 75+ years trading experience

I am self employed..i trade EURO-dollar futures at the CME group...i trade interest rate futures, and some stocks on the side for shits and giggles....but i also employ money managers as well...there is enough room for all the above
ssorenn (0 DX)
12 Feb 14 UTC
you are not guaranteed to lose 50% of nothing, thats what these people are trying to teach
Well, I was 16 and too young to know about shorts.

And since you're doing Euro-dollar futures and doing interest rate swaps, I would think you'd be better off using a more advanced platform

options allow you to be market directional without have the same amount of capital as to just buy the underlying securities
There wouldn't be an options market if the sellers of options didn't make money on those options, ssorenn. I'll admit, I am just repeating what my professor told me, but he worked for 30 years at the CFTC, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

i never said i use the platform, did i....i am a professional, i sit in front of 12 screens on info everyday, and have my own servers on which execute
Yes, they do, which is the same reason futures are more popular than forwards. But you will still not exercise the option 50% of the time roughly.
ssorenn (0 DX)
12 Feb 14 UTC
for every seller there is a buyer and vice versa ...other wise there would be no market

12 Feb 14 UTC
listen, quote your professor all you like...when the day comes that you finally put your knowledge to the test,i hope we are both here on this site and you can tell me from your experience what you actually think
I just think the lay person is better off hiring a money manager rather than making the decisions themselves. Especially for the more complicated vehicles such as futures and options which require margin accounts and such.
ssorenn (0 DX)
12 Feb 14 UTC
futures are derivatives and have endless upside or downside....options , the meet little things that they are, allow you to limit your capital risk,to the investment amount
ssorenn (0 DX)
12 Feb 14 UTC
neat
ssorenn, why would people sell options if they don't hope to make money off of them? There's a limit to how much a seller can gain off of an option, but an unlimited amount they can lose. It makes sense that options will be priced so that buyers lose more often than they win.
ssorenn (0 DX)
12 Feb 14 UTC
they also serve well as a hedge
ssorenn (0 DX)
12 Feb 14 UTC
the difference, when you buy options you are obligated to put up the capital to buy them, when you sell options you take in the premium from the buyer...you are correct that in the case of selling options you have unlimited risk, but you can either by them back or buy the underlying security against it as a hedge
ssorenn (0 DX)

people make millions selling premium

Yeah, but see the thing is that you and I know this. We're current and (hopefully) future professionals. But does this site teach people how to hedge? Idk, I think it's a neat idea, but I wouldn't encourage my friends to use it.

Opinions on Variants
I'm a relative newbie on the site and have played all but 1 game on the classic map. The one game I am playing on another map (Ancient Med) I am not enjoying it as much. And its not because I am doing terribly, because I am tied for most SCs and have a good ally. I was wondering what the general opinion on the different variants are, as in which is the best and whether you prefer the original map or a variant map as your favorite game. It will be interesting to hear feed back from a lot of you.

Unrated games
They have them on vdip now, and I think we could use them too.

Bet size 0, doesn't affect any stats. This way people can't worry about stats when playing in the Masters for example, making it genuinely only about the tournament without having to cancel. Just one of many reasons to introduce this.
