Briggs-Meyers vs Diplomacy Statistics
Just wondering if anyone has ever done a statistical analysis of won-loss records for a given country against the personality archetypes of those playing said country.

lack of armies in f2f
i don't get to play face to face games very often, but the last times i did, i noticed that in the board game version (at least the one we played), there is only a limited amount of armies and fleets for every power, namely nine fleets and nine armies. the rulebook suggests (if i remember correctly) that if you run out of armies (or fleets, but that is unlikely) that you have to use fleets instead, which strikes me as a really odd concept. am i missing something? or how do you all handle this?

Sincere Question
Guys, Abgemacht posted in the Bible Verses thread to ask me if I think I am some sort of eProphet. He and I have both noticed that this thread, unlike the previous Daily Bible Reading thread, has very few posts except for my one daily post.

religious positions towards theodicy
dear christians out there (or in fact, any other religious people as well),

this always interests me when talking to religious people: do you have a (personal) position towards the theodicy, or what do you generally think about it?

Just thought i'd get your attention! This place seems to be full of bible bashers and Americans, now my cheese burger eating cousins I can cope with as long as you don't try pronouncing tomatoes, but if anyone tries to redeem my soul, I shall insert a large garden gnome up their bottom. YANKEE DOODLE DIDDLY DANDIE, YEHAW! Or whatever it is passes for greetings in these parts.

Opinions on Variants
I'm a relative newbie on the site and have played all but 1 game on the classic map. The one game I am playing on another map (Ancient Med) I am not enjoying it as much. And its not because I am doing terribly, because I am tied for most SCs and have a good ally. I was wondering what the general opinion on the different variants are, as in which is the best and whether you prefer the original map or a variant map as your favorite game. It will be interesting to hear feed back from a lot of you.

"Your claim that in the mid-19th Century there wasn't a pervasive idea of just war or the legality of wars of conquest ignores reality."

Indeed, there had been such a concept in internatonal law since the days of Vattel or earlier. In the 18th century, Europeans widely objected to the Prussian annexation of Silesia as being unlawful. Ditto the partition of Poland. After the French Revolution, the patrimonial notion of conquest was repudiated, conquered territories gained the right to be repatriated. The Concert of Europe, among other things, repudiated the right to change (European) boundaries without prior approval from the Concert. International law was actually very sophisticated by the mid-19th century.

"most U. S. citizens championed the invasion, with almost no public voices dissenting"

That's not quite true. A section of the Whig Party was quite incensed about the war, especially in the secretive manner in which it was conducted. Abraham Lincoln publicly denounced it, among others.

"The EU was negotiating a trade deal, Russia decided to scupper it, that's all i know for sure."

That's just flatly untrue. Russia didn't scupper anything. Ukraine chose for itself. Russia simply said that it would have to take protective measures if a flood of European products enter Russia via Ukrainian market. A sovereign decision for Russia to protect its economy. The EU meanwhile is threatening sanctions and a financial blockade, and imposed conditions like rehabilitating Tymoshenko, and gave no assurances that Ukraine would be compensated for any losses it would take from losing trade preferences in the CIS.

"But yes, the EU uses soft power, because it doesn't have an army to threaten the use of hard power."

Threatening a financial blockade on Ukraine is just as damaging. Stop deluding yourselves into thinking your strong-arm tactics are benign.

" the Ukrainian opposition existed before"

The Ukrainian opposition was born in Germany. The UDAR party was formed in Germany with German money and German coordination. Klitscko would be completely irrelevant like he was in the mid-2000s if not for EU support. The Orange Revolution was a miserable failure, and that too is being propped up by EU pressure to rehabilitate Tymoshenko.

"I can't find any reference to any EU nation sending aid or selling weapons..."

http://ru-politics.livejournal.com/14752849.html

Greece gave them 60 mortars and a missile boat. Lithuania gave them 14,000 AK-47s. Czech Republic gave them tanks, howitzers, mortars, munitions, anti-tank weapons, grenades. Hungary gave them grenades, mortars, and other ammunition. France, Estonia and UK provided military training.

Tolstoy: And what on Earth does Silicon Valley or reparations have to do with justifying a shameless annexation of the 1840's? I am not here to arbitrate a territorial dispute which does not exist. Nor, actually, did I enter this thread to lambast your jingoism justified with hindsight gained from Silicon Valley, but since you took issue at length with my "historical justifications for violent annexation" comment, I chose to do just that.

Putin33: Thanks for the reference.

I have to say I've played Austria only rarely but it has always stumped me. Obviously having good press and not getting stabbed is key but I'd love to hear people's thoughts on Austria

Unrated games
They have them on vdip now, and I think we could use them too.

Bet size 0, doesn't affect any stats. This way people can't worry about stats when playing in the Masters for example, making it genuinely only about the tournament without having to cancel. Just one of many reasons to introduce this.
