Briggs-Meyers vs Diplomacy Statistics
Just wondering if anyone has ever done a statistical analysis of won-loss records for a given country against the personality archetypes of those playing said country.
President Eden (2750 D)

we've done the personality archetypes here a few times but i don't think anyone's really bothered to compile

fwiw i'm a socionics ENTp [roughly corresponds to ENTP I think...] and i'm god-tier at this game
mendax (321 D)

Re. Briggs/Myer, I'm INTJ (though the J is only just). I'm a competent Italy, but struggle with the other nations depending on how fast they have to be played.
rojimy1123 (597 D)
10 Feb 14 UTC
Well, I am INTP and seem to perform best with Turkey or England. Seems I do best in situations where I can use my rational mind without having to worry too much about interpreting another person's motives. Fewer options give me a better chance.
mendax (321 D)
10 Feb 14 UTC
As a hypothesis, I would suggest that the more "I" people do better as the slower nations (Italy, England, Turkey) and the more "E" people do better as the faster nations (Russia, Germany, Austria).
Hamilton Brian (811 D(B))
10 Feb 14 UTC
Interesting concept. I am definitely an INTP, but as I get older I vacillate toward a 50/50 split of I and E. I think that is because I have tried to put myself in situations, for better or for worse, that require more of an E presence. Regarding success and MB correlation...I don't see one. I have a lot of draws, but I think that is due to my Libra sun.
Hamilton Brian (811 D(B))

Sorry...that should say INFP.

When we have conducted polls on this site in the past it usually turns out that the largest share of diplomacy players are INTJ (with the vast majority of players Introvert rather than Extrovert).

One thing I have noticed on this site, is that many people who appear extroverted on the forum say they are introverts is real life.

I'm thinking about an honest research project. Take the top 100 active players in the ghost rankings and map out their percentages against their "type". I'm not saying there's anything there, but I'd like to give it a shot. Trouble is convincing the top 100 to go along with it.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

i feel like a large number of us are E and INTJs.

Those are the "mastermind" and "executive" ones, right?

I also do strangely well with Turkey but only on the Fog of War variant on Vdip.
Intj. I play the wicked witches well. Though i need more data for other countries.

INTJ, I've won 7 times as Germany, 6 as Turkey, a few times as the rest besides Austria. And same as PE, "i'm god-tier at this game"
frenchie29 (185 D)
10 Feb 14 UTC
I'm ENFG, but I haven't played for very long, only logging 1 win so far as Russia. I feel like the odd one out here...
peterwiggin (15158 D)

INTJ
Win rates: (press only)
Austria: 33%
England: 25%
Italy: 50%
France: 22%
Germany: 29%
Russia: 33%
Turkey: 37.5%
I've never been eliminated as Austria though, and I've never lost a wta press game as Austria (at least not here . . .)
If I'm ranked above jmo and PE, what tier does that put me in?
Theodosius (232 D(S))
10 Feb 14 UTC
INTJ, but with a strong E and P.

I prefer the Enneagram (type 5) over B-M, but since it's more obscure, that would make it even harder to rate countries vs. personalities.
uclabb (589 D)
10 Feb 14 UTC
I'm INTP with NTP all really strong and then nearly E. I don't really think of myself as being better at any power, maybe France but I think that is just because France is actually better. I used to suck at Russia, but I've since figured it out. Also god tier.
none of u are ranked above me im da best corner in da game

INTJ (heavy on the 'I'). I don't have enough classic games under my belt to constitute a good sample, but there are definite patterns: I suck as Austria (zero wins, zero draws (except in a gunboat game once)) and do best with Russia (1/4 wins and 3/10 draws have been as Russia).
MadMarx (36299 D(G))

Here's some old data: http://webdiplomacy.net/forum.php?threadID=619173#619872

With so many similar types, it may be more interesting to look at the actual percentage of each of the categories? Plus, I think someone once said that the longer run-on sentences you write, the better you are at this game, that may be worth looking into also.
frenchie29 (185 D)
10 Feb 14 UTC
Well, @MadMarx, that must mean I am great at this game, because I am a pro at writing run on sentences, but, that is proven false by the fact that you're one of the greatest players on the server and I'm a measly SoW student, so I am learning still, but if how good you are is how well you write run on sentences, then I will be fantastic in a few years once I rack up enough points and catch up to top players, but I doubt I'll ever surpass you, because you are just ranked so high and it would take a miracle for a player like me to get as high as a player like you, no matter what the scenario, even the worst won't make it much easier for me to catch up, but I still envy your skill and wish to play as well as you in the future.
Interesting idea. I'm an ESTJ (and apparently the only one so far). For press games on this site, my percentages are:

Austria 14% win 14% draw 42% defeat 28% survive
Russia 60% win 40% draw
Turkey 50% win 50% draw
England 33% win 55% draw 11% defeat
France 33% win 66% draw
Germany 0% win 66% draw 33% defeat
Italy 16% win 32% draw 0% defeat 50% survive

Strong preference for corner powers, especially eastern corners.

I am really intrigued by this discussion. I love the Briggs-Meyers test (and can typically pick out the profile for most people with whom I have regular, personal interaction). I would guess that, in general, the I vs. E would have very little to do with abilities on this site (though I would imagine that I's are more likely to play in this format and would devote more time to press, generally speaking). I think that N vs. S would be pretty evenly balanced, perhaps with the N's taking a slight advantage due to their ability to think "outside the box." I would imagine that more T's play Diplomacy than F's simply because an F would have a hard time getting over a stab (though I would guess I've played with a few F's on this site). P vs. J is, I think, more like the I/E dichotomy and wouldn't have a lot of bearing on play.

As far as myself, I'm an INTP - fairly strong in all of those. I don't know that I've finished enough games on this site to provide a strong enough sample (just 24) but in those games I have:

7 victories (2 Austria, 1 Russia, 2 France, 2 Germany) ((all in PPSC games))
10 draws (2 Russia, 2 Turkey, 2 France, 1 England, 1 Germany, 2 Austria)
7 survivals (3 Italy, 1 Russia, 1 England, 1 Turkey, 1 Austria) ((all in PPSC games))

So my percentages are:
Austria - 40% Win, 40% Draw, 20% Survive
England - 50% Draw, 50% Survive
France - 50% Win, 50% Draw
Germany - 67% Win, 33% Draw
Italy - 100% Survive ((God, I hate Italy))
Russia - 25% Win, 50% Draw, 25% Survive
Turkey - 67% Draw, 33% Survive

Pretty strong in the center (A/G) and with France. Italy is clearly my weakest (though I'd be interested to play Italy now that I've switched over to WTA).

I think I'm ENFP, although its been a while.

And I display nearly no pattern. in the month I've played I've won as:

France (at PlayDip), Germany, England, Russia (twice)

and been defeated as Italy, Austria, England, and France.

My draws are a shit-ton of people going CD and the rest of us doing the draw, except one time where I think I was England forcing Turkey into a draw at the stalemate line.

So, I guess the story is that ENFP guys really like cold, rainy climates?

INTJ here, but when I was younger I tested out as INFJ. But I'm not a great player. Just discovered diplomacy about a year ago, and I've improved with time, but still mediocre.

Curious how many introverts we have and how many INTJ's in particular. Introverts are a minority and INTJ runs at 2-3% of gen pop.

INTJ, very strong in each dimension. Not sure of win percentages, but I strongly prefer Austria, Turkey, and France, in that order, to the other countries.

INFJ

I'm a strong Russia: I've soloed 50% of the time I've played that position.
I'm a lousy Austria: I've been eliminated in 3/5 of my games there.
I've never soloed as England or France, but have almost never been eliminated in those positions either.
As each of Germany and Turkey I have won a couple of solos, but not consistently.
Usually manage to survive as Italy.

I feel like I have a low elimination rate. I don't solo often, but I don't get taken out that often either.

@Fasces My husband is also a INTP diplomacy player.
I'm another INTJ, check out geekinheels star wars personality test. INTJ is Lars Owen (I took the test three times trying to get anyone else, but that is it).

As to preferences: I tend to be a draw monkey.

I find Russia most difficult. England stinks for me too.

I tend to have a love-hate relationship with Italy wither doing well or crashing fast.

France is good, but I tend to stall at six or mine scs.

Germany is fun and treacherous.

I like the security of Turkey in the corner.
Introverts speaking out on the forum doesn't really surprise me. We do have opinions and often they are very firmly held. The anonymity of the board provides us a way to speak out without any personal risk.

it was meant as a confession--missed a word--should have read: some of us have a bad trolling habit.

It was a reference to Crazy A's statement: "the board provides us a way to speak out without any personal risk." Hence, i was taking this as a factor in the excessive amount of trolling on this here forum.

lack of armies in f2f
i don't get to play face to face games very often, but the last times i did, i noticed that in the board game version (at least the one we played), there is only a limited amount of armies and fleets for every power, namely nine fleets and nine armies. the rulebook suggests (if i remember correctly) that if you run out of armies (or fleets, but that is unlikely) that you have to use fleets instead, which strikes me as a really odd concept. am i missing something? or how do you all handle this?

Opinions on Variants
I'm a relative newbie on the site and have played all but 1 game on the classic map. The one game I am playing on another map (Ancient Med) I am not enjoying it as much. And its not because I am doing terribly, because I am tied for most SCs and have a good ally. I was wondering what the general opinion on the different variants are, as in which is the best and whether you prefer the original map or a variant map as your favorite game. It will be interesting to hear feed back from a lot of you.

They have them on vdip now, and I think we could use them too.

Bet size 0, doesn't affect any stats. This way people can't worry about stats when playing in the Masters for example, making it genuinely only about the tournament without having to cancel. Just one of many reasons to introduce this.
