Who wants a piece of this???
As some of you may have noticed, I've been discretely playing a random game here and there in the last bit. Having seen my last one end because a dumb ass resigned, I thought it was time for fiercer competition. Any takers?

I tried to click the +1 icon on a posting I liked, but it just jumps you to the top of the page. Presumably this is something to do with the earlier WebDip outage.

Live game start or cancel.
So the site was out of order for a while. A live gunboat is still to begin (although it's set a 'now'), it doesn't start, nor can anyone leave. Is there anything we can do about this situation?

Had a chance to explain American politics today
It was an interesting opportunity. It started with my coworker asking about the electoral college and evolved into a general question of how American politics works. Her reaction was mixed. I know we log on here every day and gripe about how our politics suck, but after my holistic explanation, I feel almost grateful we have politics to gripe about. Our problems really aren't that bad. (Unless Romney/ Ryan wins, jk! not really.)

Game
In commemoration of a string of high-profile bans lately, I've created a game to celebrate. I am looking forward to decreasing the number of games "infected" by a multi from 45% to about 10%, which is what mine is. If you want the password, message me. Don't play if you're a multi because the mods will be keeping close tabs on all of us I'm sure.

Bad Losers
I (sort of) understand why people give up on a hopeless position, but the current system does not seem to punish them (or allow the rest of us to play on). See more detail.
VirtualBob (192 D)

In several games I have seen someone lose their last SC(s) in the fall, then refuse to log in and disband their forces during the "build" phase, thus causing a full phase length delay for what is essentially a 2-minute decision ... especially in gunboat where there can be no discussion. Why can't the system simply disband automatically? Similarly, I have seen people forced to retreat when there is no place to retreat to ... again, in a fall move where they lose their last SC thus leading to a double-phase-length delay. It seems that if there is only one choice for a retreat (disband) then that should happen automatically.

Does that piss you off or annoy you?

Well, when someone has been eliminated from the game and has no means to exact revenge on you this is their only option...and it seems work. lol.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
31 Oct 12 UTC
CDing with three centers left when a superpower is your neighbor and has 13 already is worse, but yeah, I understand. Revenge is the fun option; crying is the one that nobody likes.

And honestly, I say it all the time, I might be losing, but if I exact my revenge upon someone, I have the power, not them.
VirtualBob (192 D)
31 Oct 12 UTC
I am a bit surprised by these responses. I am certainly not "crying" but I probably am a but annoyed. The surprising thing is that having lost, people take things personally and "exact revenge" on the remaining players. Seems sort of childish.
Willtor (113 D)

It's a meta-annoyance. It isn't that their orders are designed to make your win as painful as possible -- it's that the amount of time they take to make the orders is designed to annoy you, as a player. It's about as close to metagaming as is allowed.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
31 Oct 12 UTC
I don't take things personally, but I sometimes think other people take what I say personally. I guess that means it works.
cspieker (18223 D)

It is sort of sad I think when someone decides to do that with his last piece. It's a desperate bid to demonstrate that he is not (yet) impotent.

It's a boardgame people. Sometimes you lose. Let it go.
If I'm in a hopeless position and can't survive then I go down fighting, but I never make people wait out of spite. That's just being mardy.

On the subject of auto-disbands - if you're losing your last SCs or if a dislodged piece can't retreat, then I'm all for it. I've never really understood why the game wasn't coded that way from the start.
I still think a "concede" would be handy. Yes, maaaaaybe you can diplome your way out, but it's just a game and sometimes you get spanked. Concede, move on!
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
01 Nov 12 UTC
I think the simple solution would be to enforce titles according to performance... titles visible by all and you can't control it...

For instance, MadMarx would be "Mad Marx the Magnificent," because he's awesome. I could be "the constant," because I never resign or miss a turn, and michiganman could be "the flying douchebag from hell loser maggot" because he CD's all day long.

This should fix the problem.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

And I would be "The Amazing Gunboater Whose Faults Are Always Due to Noobs Around Him in His Nooby 5-Bet Games bo_sox48" :)
Trooth (561 D)

Douche Baggery is apparently admired here. That's the constant I see in the forums. Complain that other players are needlessly wasting your time and get called a baby. The maturity level on this site is a lot lower than I expected for what I consider a high brow game.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Trooth would certainly know all about Douche Baggery considering he is Queen Latifah's Douche Bag.

@ VirtualBob: "but the current system does not seem to punish them"

Do you think they should be punished? What sort of punishment? Like, if you refused to finalise your orders when you have no option but to disband your last unit, the system should dock points from you? Or what?

I understand why you find such behaviour annoying, but I'm not sure where you're going with your suggestion that the game should *punish* people for such behaviour.
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 Nov 12 UTC
@Jamie - We are talking about year 1 CDs and cancelling. A cancelled game actually returns the points to the CDer and clears their record. The punishment is about not returning the points and leaving the CD on their record.

Instead of an autocancel on CD pre year 3, it should be an autodraw with the non-CD nations. Then the CDer loses the points and the CD stays on their record. And it won't affect GR as games under 3 full years don't get put on record for GR purposes. A simple tweak of the stats could also take out any games ending before year 4 on the counts and percentages.
That's a damn good idea Draug.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
01 Nov 12 UTC
@ Draugnar: With respect, no, we are not talking about year 1 CDs. Read the OP again. He's talking about people who don't finalise when they are on the point of elimination.
@ VB - next time you make a gunboat game post it to the thread and make a password. I will join it and hopefully I can help you attract other "good sports" to the game.

I agree it sucks when people are douche bags and they should be punished. Unfortunately, as Trooth pointed out, this site seems to have a problem in that douche baggery is almost rewarded (as you can see in this thread, etc.). Not everyone is like that but many are, especially the forum regulars and many of the mods. So, things won't change but maybe next game we can try and keep them out.

It should also be noted that YellowJacket is clearly the "the flying douchebag from hell loser maggot" considering the content of his message. MichiganMan is actually a very respectful person.
