Something you didn't know...
Austria-Hungary was a direct continuation of the Roman Empire. The Empire in the West existed until 1806, when Napoleon invaded it and the last Emperor, Francis II, abdicated. However, he continued to rule as Austrian Emperor until his death in 1835. The next few emperors continued reigning over Austria (later extended to include Hungary in 1867) until the end of World War One, when the last Habsburg Emperor, Charles, abdicated and went into exile in 1918.

Political diplomacy - the game
How about a game of two left-wingers, two right and three independents? Left must ally, rights the same, independents go either side.

effective strategies in a nightclub?
talking to a girl, she seems moderately interested. ask if she wants to get coffee, she rejects the offer. apparently not interested in spite of talking for a while with you. then you get desperate and start talking to all these random girls and they reject you one by one. is this an effective strategy?

Anyone in Italy predicting weather and other geological events should band together and respond only with "no comment" until this conviction is overturned. Of course that could cost them their jobs so doing such would be very bold and courageous.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
23 Oct 12 UTC
Yeah, Alderian, in the same way that all the factory workers in other nations that are working our outsourced jobs should complain that they don't get paid like Americans or work in the conditions that Americans do in American jobs, but that would cost them their jobs, so they don't. If only people were bold like that. I speak out against things at home but I usually speak out against it to people that agree, so I'm often just preaching to the choir.

A famous (1960s) italian joke says "italian situation is very bad, but not serious".

All this mess is a consequence of a political situation built around L'Aquila quake. They (government, scientists, and whoever could be considered involved) keep on bouncing responsibilities back: failed predictions/preventions/operations. It's humiliating.

People demand justice (:P) there, and you have to blame someone, to tell them someone is guilty (and that it's not you).

And now, blaming scientists is the last step. I don't really think they will be convicted after the last degree of judgment, it would be madness. I am quite convinced it is a (pathetic) show.

They blamed scientists in the 1600s when Martin Luther broke people out of their the-sun-revolves-around-us shell too. Those guys were pretty cool though.. they weren't afraid of it. I hope those guys fight back with more than just legal appeals. Hopefully they'll get the people on their side.
^Martin Luther didn't do that
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

The Protestant Revolution was led by Martin Luther. Copernicus and Galileo (among others, I know) were the scientists, but it was all revolving around the Protestant Revolution. It's a broad statement.

@bosox, I'm sorry but I'm not sure what you are getting at.

Never mind… I was trying to make a comparison from Europe being stupid to Europe being stupid. O_o
Well, Copernicus wasn't the first one to discover the heliocentric theory. Archimedes did that like 1600 years earlier.

Then stupid Ptolemy came in and messed shit up, getting it all wrong. He should have been jailed for making a wrong prediction too.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
23 Oct 12 UTC
True, Ptolemy kinda fucked up all of European exploration and anything map related for awhile…

Archimedes didn't do much with the heliocentric theory, or at least not much came of it, because Europe didn't believe it in the 1600s. That's what I'm getting at. It took people to speak out against what they didn't think was right… just the first example that came to mind. Sorry if my European history class was one of those that I played live games in.

Love Alderian's suggestion of a Weather orecasters strike.

I think we should mount a show trial of Michael Fish (with his permission) to raise awareness

Paused games
I know that paused games are when the players choose to have a pause due to a player or a few, but how long can this last? This game is paused and the players been gone for about a mounth, and most players filled in their orders, so will they just keep on waiting, especially if the player never comes back?

Creating Incentives to Ban
It is a topic that is most odd...If Web Diplomacy players were awarded points for catching those who were charged with account fraud, would it be legitimate?

Keep in mind that if the allegation is true, the player gets 50 pts., but if it is false, they are docked by 5 D.

My name is Mapu, and I'm addicted to Diplomacy.
My addiction to this game is reallllly bad. I check the site from morning til night and even dream about my moves. And then I'll let my games wind down and say that's it. But just as I'm about to log off at midnight I'll see a game with 6 people and say fuck it and join. UGH.

There. I said it.
