But SD is right, when you got into berlin i thought its all over. Lucky for me you did not move that army back down. I really messed up when i moved the fleet out of there at that moment.

I'm still unsure what Austria can really do about it though. If he's facing Turkey and Russia (which he often is, not always I know) and Italy goes on top of him, what's he to do? Thrown games will become much more common ;)

Any time when you play Italy and me Austria if you do this you'll go out with me or soon after me.

Yeah, Austria's moves hurt me worse than Italy. Nor sure what his obsession about Rumania was. I made an early decision to try and prop him up while moving on Russia and holding Italy. Austria's decison to throw centers at Italy though blew me up. Lucky to get the draw.

Austria could have stopped or hurt Italy multiple times. Not sure that is the greatest opening. It all depends.

I saw another opening recently that completely destroyed Austria while Austria was making sensible moves. Game is still going, or i would post it.

If Austria opens southern and Italy gets into Trieste in the first turn (may be unlikely), Italy can pull apart Austria quickly. It seemed like the loss of Trieste was never a huge risk, based on the idea that you were getting two new SCs. In this game, Italy denied Austria a build and without the build Austria can't withstand Italy.

The main thing that would stop the above is a hedgehog. It would stop the Italian opening here too. Not sure what the f trieste hold does for you. It seems like doing the hedgehog is defensive and accomplishes more than the hold does.

And if you don't get Trieste that opening fails and starts a war you won't win in the long haul?

Yeah, it's a risk. But Tantris is right: if it succeeds, it's devastating.

Everything is a risk. I am also not sure why you say you won't win in the long haul. Seems like Austria and Italy fighting, without a quick resolution, just means they both lose. There is no quick Austria attack on Italy, especially when Austria can never build fleets.

The crusher is a much lesser risk though, is it not?

If Italy moves to Tyrolia, Austria can be pretty sure they are in a war. If Austria opens southern, Italy has a unit in Tyrolia, Vienna and Venice, but Austria should be getting two builds. Now, Austria curls up in a ball. If Russia and Turkey are fighting or not messing too much with Austria, then Italy is going to be needing the fleet in Adriatic to actually take a supply center. Serbia supports Trieste, Budapest supports Vienna, Vienna supports Trieste. You are now in for a long haul.

Not sure where the risk comes from, that you are talking about.
