So a while ago a couple of threads were started about this. Do we remember if this was considered cheating or not?

Instead of the red X by the banned members usernames, perhaps you could use a hammer silhouette?

Player needed for public press and gunboat games
I haven't been able to get a hold of King Rishard so, if he doesn't show, I'm going to need a player or two to cover a public press and gunboat game. Let me know if anyone's interested.

Vive la France!
It is a rare day that I say anything good about France, but every now and then they do something worthy of note. The French government has unveiled its budget and, instead of slashing public spending, they're focusing on raising taxes on the the wealthy and businesses!

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m quite convinced that this strategy will fail in spectacular fashion and leave France in an almighty pickle. But bloody good show for giving it a go! We are actually going to witness the outcome of a genuinely different way of tackling the current financial troubles. After all those endless arguments about who is right and wrong about how to get out of this mess, we’re finally going to get a chance to see whether hitting the wealthy will be as much of a disaster as so many claim it to be.

Anyone care to place any bets on the outcome? :)
Invictus (240 D)

I too think it will fail spectacularly. But it is good that someone's doing it so we can see how things would play out.

Even if you think that this is the right economic strategy, the really rich people can easily just move to Belgium or England (London, of course) to avoid the huge taxes. Such is the reality of the current European Union. I think a fiscal union isn't too far off so this loophole may be closed shortly, but there's always Switzerland.

As I've said here before, Europe needs to either become a proper federation on the lines of Canada or revert to a simple free trade area, without the bureaucracy and democratic deficit. This current half-way situation is what's making the eurocrisis so much worse.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Yeah, I'd bet it'll work quite well considering their government is 100% different than ours. That's about all you have to consider.
Invictus (240 D)
29 Sep 12 UTC
100% different? It may be a unitary state with a semi-presidential system, but it's hardly entirely different from what America has. It's also a democracy, for one.

And economic truths are universal. the Soviet Union was much closer to being "100% different" than us, but it still crapped out economically by the 1970s since a command economy doesn't work. China, also approaching "100%" difference, took off when it started applying capitalist principles and Deng Xiaoping talked about how glorious it was to be rich.

If taxing the rich so hard works for France it's because that's generally the right thing to do. If it fails it's because it's generally the wrong thing to do.
Invictus (240 D)

I see that last paragraph contradicts my first post a bit. France's failure may not necessarily prove entirely that taxing the rich is generally bad (due to their being easily able to flee in the European Union), but its success certainly would show that taxing the rich through the nose is generally the right way to go.

By name, yes, France's government is a republic, but it elects mostly between two parties, one of which is socialist and another of which is close to soft fascism (sounds worse than it is; I don't know how to explain it). They've also got the world's best healthcare and manage to keep it free. They also have much more paid time off work than America does. Maternity leaves can sometimes last years. It's a lot less business-driven and more comfort-driven. Maybe that's why they are stereotypically unkind to tourists, specifically Americans. They are used to their comfort and I like that kind of approach.

That's not to say things are perfect, they are far from it. That's not to say America is bad, it is far from it (if Putin responds, I'll rescind this statement because he's right in every way that America is the reason that the world sucks right now). I'm not criticizing or appraising either system. That's just how France is.

The UMP is soft fascism? That's wrong enough to ignore the rest of the post.

And it's that kind of response that makes me lose hope in humanity. If you want to be politically correct, call it gaullisme and make your conscience happy.
Invictus (240 D)
29 Sep 12 UTC
It's not a matter of political correctness, just correctness.
Invictus (240 D)

I mean really. If the UMP is fascist then American Democrats are Space Nazis. It's a ludicrous thing to say.

So wait, the UK's austerity induced double-dip hasn't already proven that austerity has failed? What? Ditto Greece & Spain? What needs to happen before you recognize it as a failure? Norway already showed stimulus works in Europe.
Putin33 (111 D)
30 Sep 12 UTC
The soft fascists in the FN are probably preferable to the wannabes in the UMP anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

15 Day Phases
Yes, I know a number of games have been changed to 15 day phases; please don't email us about it. I've contacted kestas to see if he can simply revert the database; otherwise I'll fix them by hand tomorrow when I wake up. On the off chance kestas can't fix it, can you please post here with the gameID and the correct phase length. Thanks.

CD'ing
I've never missed a turn or CD'ed so I don't know what happens. When someone goes CD does the game still show up on their home page or does it disappear and they'd have to go find it again? I know we are forced to look at the defeated games until they are over.

Gingers
A while back in one of the forum posts I made what I thought a harmless joke when I repeated the (to me) ridiculous saying, "At least we're not gingers." When that put a damper on the conversation, I began to wonder if I had actually offended someone, if people thought I was serious. Then tonight I found an entry on the bbc news online that cleared things up for me.

I've never had a candidate for anything personally come to my door before
A candidate for State Representative (not a lofty position, but still significant) personally stopped by my house and every house in the neighborhood to try to convince us to vote for her. I've never seen an actual candidate for anything do that before. Is this kind of personal canvassing widespread, or is it just this candidate?

Plagiarism
No wonder today's young folk think they can just get away with stealing someone else's ideas, words, and efforts. Even at high levels of the public sphere, plagiarism persists. What an incorrigible individual.

The next 100 questions
I will provide a scenario to you all, and then ask you a question. You may all ask as many questions as you want to get to the answer to my question, but I'll only answer "yes," "no," or "it doesn't matter." If you already know the answer, please don't spoil it for the others. This is a group activity so read what others have asked and work together (in my experience, 2 people solve it much more quickly than 1, and a group of 4 usually gets it in 20-30 min. of so).

How can I get a game unpaused? How do I contact an admin?
Apparently, I have to email and admin. But what are the admin email addresses?

IMHO, this whole pause thing seems to be a bad idea...
