Email notifications?

I'm not receiving email notifications when someone messages me in-game and I'm finding that really surprising. Is that expected behavior?

FWIW, I originally used plus addressing and I'm wondering if that messed something up.

you do NOT get emailed when someone messages you, the notification is only on site

Welp, that matches what I'm seeing. Why is that? Seems like email notifications would be a logical good thing?

It's not really practical. In full press games you should probably be sending and receiving a lot of messages, especially early in the game. I think I would get dozens of emails each day if I had such notifications. Easier to just log on periodically and check.

Eh, to each their own. It'd be nice to have the option (which I could enable and you could disable :).

There's also always mail filtering rules.

It would be pretty easy to program an email for when a game starts or phase changes. It might prevent some NMR's and CD's. Not for live games of course. Amazon and Google both have transactional email services that are very cheap.

@Mapu, would a smtp server not make more sense than outsourcing to google or amazon? We habe a dedicated server, it can easily install a standard mail server; i honestly think it would be about 8 minutes of coding (mostly spent trackong down where in the code the current notifications are sent)

Committed players don't' need email notifications, because they regularly check when they are involved in a game. You know...the whole "x-hour turns" thing should be enough to get you logging in every now and then...And by not choosing "ready" if your timing is sketchy, you can defacto control turn length to max and not need phase-change notifications.

Yeah you could do it on your own but the risk is that since it's a new mail server with no reputation that it may get caught in peoples' spam more often than not. Google is like $2/week and you can send up to 5000 emails a day with each thousand beyond that another couple of cents. Amazon is similar. Any approach would be better than no emails IMO.

Originally we were on a shared host and didn't have a lot of room for extra stuff so email wasn't an option. With the new server it shouldn't be a problem. But code changes are currently frozen right now so may be awhile before we can add goodness like this.

I think an email for every PM would be a better idea. I know sometimes PM's get lost with all of my games going on, and they're easy to miss

@Mapu - are you willing to pay the fees for this additonal service? 5000 emails a day is nothing for this site's game messages.

This comes back to any other desired change. You have to weigh the effort involved in making it, the available manpower to get it done, and the costs involved in running it with the number of people who actually want it. The cost/benefit analysis would be the determining factor.

Civil Order

My version of the most original, never-before-seen thread ever.

Two live games tonight. Two drawn games. One in 1901 builds, one in 1903 autumn. One because of a player whose name surprised me a bit to have CD'd; another who I suspected and even talked about with other players prior to the game.

The Case of the First-Cause Favorite

Pick something you're passionate about--a literary/TV/film series you love, a hobby you're really into, etc.--and say how you were first introduced to it, or if you can recall, what the first episode/story it was you first saw/read...

It'd be interesting to see not only what some of the choices here are, but how we came to pick them in the first place.

Game Message Time

Why do some in game messages have an estimated time (~9:36pm for example) which is usually way off? Shouldn't a computer be able to know the exact time a message was sent?
