This day in history
Leon Trotsky died in Mexico City. Interesting side note, his great grand daughter is the head of the US National Institute on Drug Abuse.

LOL...

Putin's pro-Stalin and anti-Trotsky...that never fails to crack me up--

Putin, I know you don't like Orwell, but if you did...would you have been the type to cheer when Napoleon sets his dogs on Snowball to chase him off Animal Farm?

(What am I saying, you'd probably be bleating out "FOUR LEGS GOOD, TWO LEGS BETTER!" at the end there...with your ilk.)
Tolstoy (1962 D)

Don't bother, Tolstoy. Putin33 is so deep in Stalinist orthodoxy that he can't even condemn North Korea. You'll never hear anything but the 1940s party line on Trotsky.

bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
28 Aug 12 UTC
Okay, really? This thread isn't about Trotsky or Putin or Stalin or whichever Russian you want to talk about. It's about what happened on a certain date. I don't love Trotsky; in fact, I have nothing but neutrality and lack of caring for the entire Soviet nation because THERE IS NO SOVIET NATION LEFT. So why don't we shut up about it and let the thread stick to what it was made for?

If you haven't yet, look at my first response. I think you should all be amazed at my prediction.

Yeah, stop hijacking every thread that has the word "Trotsky" in it.
I'll never forget when Napoleon had Snowball run off the farm.

@invictus, what happens when you are assassinated:)? I think imprecise would be a better descriptor. If you didn't know, he was beaten with an ice axe. Ouch! Then the old screwball fought his younger assailant off until his bodyguards could come in. Good for him.
Putin33 (111 D)
28 Aug 12 UTC
The place was full of bodyguards. Yet not one but two assassination attempts got through without so much as a shot fired back. What a loser.
How would any of us handle an assassination attempt?
Invictus (240 D)
28 Aug 12 UTC
You're right, smcbride1983. Imprecise would have been better. I was also literally wrong, since he apparently didn't die the same day as the ice pick was plunged in his skull.

Correct. But I was just poking fun.

The satirical nature of Orwell's Animal Farm was primarily aimed at Totalitarian States with the old USSR as the principal target, but it would be naive to suggest that some of the criticisms Orwell expressed in satire cannot be applied to the Conservative side of politics
the classic "two legs bad, four legs good" slogan is a satire on any ideologue who makes absolutist simplistic statements

fuck I am getting bored, I am watching a replay of a NASCAR race to see how Marcose Ambrose finishes 57 laps (of 500 ? ) to go

ok yet another caution has ended and Ambrose is running 6th

The Stalinists conveniently forget who lead the Red Army from the brink of defeat to overwhelming victory in the civil war.

What's even more awful is the fact that Trotsky was the author of left-wing opposition to the more pragmatic and right-wing Bolsheviks was obscured by bizarre allegations of fascism that, more than anything, resulted in the irreparable split in global communism that haunts the ideology to this day.

I do admit that underneath all the Bolshevik compromises there was a revolution somewhere, but it was disingenuous to pretend that Trotsky was a secret rightist then, and it's even more silly now.
Kingdroid (219 D)
29 Aug 12 UTC
Wait, there are people who actually think Stalin was a good leader?

Oh, they're just some first-world faux communists who have never experienced harsh totalitarian rule? Makes sense, they probably think they'd be Stalin's right-hand man.
Putin33 (111 D)
29 Aug 12 UTC
As Lenin repeatedly said about Trotsky, he was fond of sonorous phrases. He was "leftwing in form, rightwing in essence".

""There is also a letter from Kollontai who... has returned to Norway from America. N. Iv. and Pavlov... had won Novy Mir, she says,... but ... Trotsky arrived, and this scoundrel at once ganged up with the Right wing of Novy Mir against the Left Zimmerwaldists!! That's it!! That's Trotsky for you!! Always true to himself, twists, swindles, poses as a Left, helps the Right, so long as he can... "(Collected Works, Vol. 35, p. 288)."

Trotskyists pretend as if Trotsky was some kind of true inheritor of Lenin's legacy, when in fact he opposed Lenin virtually his entire career.

"“I know that there are, of course, sages who think they are very clever and even call themselves Socialists, who assert that power should not have been seized until the revolution had broken out in all countries. They do not suspect that by speaking in this way they are deserting the revolution and going over to the side of the bourgeoisie. To wait until the toiling classes bring about a revolution on an international scale means that everybody should stand stock-still in expectation. That is nonsense.” - Lenin on Trotsky's defeatist theory of 'permanent revolution'.

""Trotsky behaves like a most despicable careerist and fac-tionalist. . . . He pays lip service to the Party, but behaves worse than any other factionalist," wrote Lenin at the time."

Trotskyists use the Red Army as a shield from all of the anti-Bolshevik actions undertaken by him during the time immediately following the war, when he was leading the so-called "Workers Opposition". He led a fractious fight about trade unions with Lenin, when the trade union issue wasn't even important at the time. Hilariously, Trotsky is branded as some kind of more democratic communist, when he strenuously advocated imposing a military-like discipline and governmentalization of the trade unions, instead of using persuasion. He also against any election of trade union bodies. Yet this stooge is the same person who loves to step on the shoulders of workers and claim he's their true advocate.

They also blame everybody else for the fragmentation of global communism when its their movement who keep coming up with new excuses to attack actually existing socialism, hail counterrevolutionary movements aiming to overthrow socialism, and divide themselves. I mean, why on earth does the US left for example have dozens of Trotskyite parties that all hate each other? But the anti-revisionist groups not only get along but have a global communist seminar they attend annually, organized by the KKE?

As for the accusations of fascism, bizarre they are not. Antonio Gramsci, no orthodox Marxist-Leninist by any means, called him the puttana of fascism.

As for the example that Trotsky did in fact collaborate with fascism, I present the following:

Orwell was a conservative. Read about his "list" of fellow travelers he turned into British intelligence, along with notes about how "Jewish" or "black" they were. Orwell was the worst kind of scum.

Question for any engineers on here?
So I'm a junior in high school, and I'm considering being an engineering major in college, and I'm wondering exactly how much the workload is. I know it's like a ton of work, more than pretty much any other major, but I'm wondering if its much more work than a physics major (which is the other major I'm considering). So, how much time on average did you spend per week for school (class, homework, studying)?
