Fund for the Public Interest
Anyone worked for them? I was offered a job as a field manager, making about 400-500 a week for the summer. I've read plenty of bellyaching online. Some of it was legitimate, but has since largely been resolved by a class action lawsuit. The rest was basically complaining that it was a lot of work, at only a little bit above minimum, and repeated failure to meet your fundraising quota resulted in firing, no if's and's or but's about it.

Not an amazing position but a potentially goo one and very influential, especially if you come before the adjudication in 7 minutes.

The Thread for People Who Want to Gunboat Good and Do Other Stuff Good Too
Would the gunboaters who frequent the 1000 D buy-in games please post here how they play gunboats so the rest of us may learn from you? Looking at a game isn't enough, we need to know what you're thinking when you see a board. What does the better player see that I miss?

France:
It seemed for me we will have an alliance with Germany, from the very beginning, but I made an early mistake letting him into Ruhr, which cost me Belgium. Even worse I wanted to bounce myself in Ruhr, but accidentally I got into Ruhr which just made things worse, he got into Burgundy while Italy for some ununderstandable reason also started abusing me. Thanks for luck and careful planning I managed to defend everything, but that cost me a lot of time and England was the clear winner of all that. I had another misorder, by going to north atlantic instead of kicking out Italy. Another time loss.

Italy wasn't giving up, which I still don't understand, Turkey has built his 3rd ship, but Italy was still abusing me even though I didn't pose any threat to him. It was clear to me, he will go under, if he doesn't start defending himself. I knew I can disturb his defense, so I did, and Turkey finished the rest of the job. Italy was still attacking me, when Turkey was already in Ionian. Ridiculous. Especially since Italy was alone against me, we got along with Germany in the meantime and he contained England.

When England was contained, by Germany mainly, it was easy for me. All I took care is to help either Germany or Turkey, till the very end, because I had no true chance to expand without giving up much of my defense. Also attacking Germany would have risen the risk of a Turkish solo. So when Germany took Warshaw, I took Belgium, so the balance was held. I built a fleet in Brest, signing Germany I had no intention going against him. He got the message. Although we didn't have a clear understanding in every round, we cooperated very well I think, while both of us was cautios to keep his defense solid. England got broke, I was in no hurry finishing him, I decided to stop Turkey first, and finish England when I can.

The rest is history, I attacked Tunis, because I thought Turkey will take Naples anyway, it would have been 1 gain 1 loss for him, and easy to get back of Tunis 1 round later, but it would have broken Italy. He didn't attack, but I did. I couldn't understand turkey later as well. From that point the endgame was quite clear, I showed Turkey my support in Trieste and in Tyrr as well, so both Germany and Turkey coud have seen, I'm fine with the draw. If the 3 of us had been able to cooperate in the endgame, we could have finished as early as 1913 Autumn. I was assuming it will happen, but I was wrong and it took a little extra time. Of course Germany's intention to build up the Moscow Ukraine Warshaw stalemate line is clearly understandable. He need 6 armies for the "cheapest" stalemate line and he had only 6 armies. That was my strategy as well, as the cheapest closure of atlantic is 5 units with minimum 3 fleets. But Turkey wasn't focusing on finishing austria+italy, so it took a lot of time. The very last turn was interesesting, I was hoping Germany will vote a draw, otherwise both of us would have soume tough times ahead.

In the end, I wanted to try out a couple of things to see if I could go for the solo. I was very cautious with it, since if Turkey had complete control of southern Europe, he would have a much easier time reaching his 18. I tried very hard to keep Austria alive - I wanted to give France an opportunity to advance against Turkey, so that a stab on France wouldn't give Turkey the win. I really didn't bother planning for stalemate lines in the east. It seemed like the expected thing to do, and I wanted to try unexpected moves to see if I could somehow make a hole in the Turkish line somewhere. In the end, when it was clear that I could not hold on to Sev or Vie, I drew.

rokakoma, I was very frustrated when you took Belgium. I had kicked England out of Scandinavia, and I left England proper to you, thinking you could finish it on your own, keeping you busy and keeping us growing at the same rate. I did not expect Italy to bother you that much, though, and draw your attention away from England. When it was clear I would have to help finish off England, it gave Turkey the opportunity to grow unchecked. I'm not faulting you, though, and I had fun playing with you. It was a tense but enjoyable relationship!

Vaft, I understand, but as I stated, I didn't see a true chance expanding south, so I truly focused on a 3-way draw. Because of Italy I lost a lot of time, from that point I didn't have so much choice. On the other hand, I knew my defense is far from solid, and you can stab me successfully sooner or later. All in all, I think you have handled the loss of Belgium very well.

Congrats, Vaft, Rokakoma and Sarg-

As England, frustrating 01 with Germany building two fleets. Made a move for centers in the North to pick up so units to defend against France who took Liverpool. To my surprise, Germany turned on France at one point taking Belgium. I should have waited for Germany to force France to disband a unit in Liverpool. Instead, egged on by Germany's awkward amount of fleets (for an E-G combo), I took a swing at Denmark hoping that France would lose one and disband in Liverpool and Germany would have an army stuck in Gascony which would help continue hostilities and lead to an E-F. Hammered away at Russia in the hopes that a giant Turkey would emerge fast enough to force G and F to the stalemate lines and leave me alone. Unfortunately, Germany thwarted this effort as well.

gg, glad to see some new names getting in on the draw in this one.

To be fair though, the Italian staying in Western Med probably had a lot to do with the French move into Piedmont. There was an Italian offer of peace right before. But still, I did not expect the Italian to stay in wmed, which was mis-calculation on my part.

Barn3tt, I wanted to try something new. A German attacking France with fleets is certainly new ;) The goal was always to keep naval dominance while balancing the two of you. It was quite unreasonable to expect you to be OK with this, and the attack on Denmark was rather obvious. But I was still in a position where France could not really hurt me, and I could still turn around to attack you instead.
I hate playing Russia in gunboats.

Great game everyone! Very interesting and dynamic game! I'm slightly disappointed that I left my draw vote up from the previous round, looking at the board I feel the game ended somewhat prematurely - but a very strong game.

@Vaftrudner: You were great competition as Germany. I don't often find myself as Turkey up against a strong Germany, so it was very interesting to do in this game!

@urallLESBIANS: I was impressed with your Austria - you had a really tough game from all sides but you stuck on in there for quite a while. Well done!

@Lando: One of the craziest Russia strategies I've ever seen! Right from the beginning, I had no idea what you were trying to do. Sometimes I would log in and think it was some kind of strange practical joke.

@roka: Nicely played to get in on the draw. I did feel that you held back though, for many turns your units remained stationary - was there any reason for that kind of play? Or do you feel like you were moving dynamically?

I shall now read the other comments above :)

Sarg: I wasn't playing dynamic, for sure. I was thinking, large bet games are unlikely to end solo, so I wasn't trying to grow further at all. Expanding south is quite hard and you were already there, making it a useless effort on the long run. Attacking Germany would have just make things easier for you, so I didn't see any point to go against him.

At the very end, I was hoping Germany will press draw before you cancel your vote, otherwise you may have had a pretty good chance I think. I was already planning a complete turnback, I think we could have handled it and the draw wasn't premature.
