Magnavox Micromatic Cabinet Record Player
So, I bought a Magnavox Micromatic Cabinet Record Player circa 1968 at Goodwill today. I've never been a huge audiophile but this is still one of the best purchases I've ever made. I'm particularly impressed I was able to plug it in after more than 40 years and have it work right away.
Nice. That is a great find. Luck was on your side today.
Did you already have a record player?
Records are the shit.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
12 Feb 12 UTC
Nope. I'd never used a record player in my life. Figured it out pretty quick, though. I think I may need to replace the needle because the arm doesn't always keep contact with the record, but it sounds fine, so not sure.
So what did you listen to first then?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Well, I tested it with Fiddler on the Roof in Goodwill.

I bought Chicago and Neil Diamond albums to listen to. Will go record hunting next weekend (if I can wait that long).

You almost definitely need to replace the needle. Thankfully, they're cheap, and you can get them at a ton of different places.

I'm in an opposite position where I have a bunch of records but no longer have a functional record player. I finally decided to use the sleeves as decoration so I got some use out of them.

Have any good ones you want to sell?
Yeah, SD, any good ones? I am working hard on my collection. Try and pick up something new each week.

I have been looking for the Last Waltz and the Harder They Come OST but cannot find either anywhere. Any ideas?
SacredDigits (102 D)

Well, in this part of Michigan, there's tons of record stores still.

Good ones I want to sell...hm.

No. The best ones I have are Houses of the Holy, Led Zeppelin III, Abbey Road, and The Wall. I have a ton of old Beach Boys ones (but not Pet Sounds) that I bought in bulk thinking that Pet Sounds would be among them, I might be willing to sell those, but I don't know if I'd call them good. Led Zeppelin III is really neat even if I can't play it because of the spinner disc inside the front jacket, it's a great conversation piece.

I may be willing to sell my copy of Thriller too, but I dunno if the wife would let me give it up.
You should buy a new record player! They aren't terribly expensive although good ones might be. I was happy to be able to take my parents' from them.

I think Thriller is probably a pretty easy one to find. I read somewhere once that the best way to judge a record store is to see how much they are selling Harvest by Neil Young for. This is the most common record in the world, somehow.

I would hope there are still good record stores in every reasonably sized city. Kitchener-Waterloo, ON, for instance has about 1 good record store per 100,000 people. I think anything less would be a travesty.
SacredDigits (102 D)
12 Feb 12 UTC
Harvest, really?

Oh, I also have a copy of Yesterday and Today with the original cover. That. Is going nowhere.

About five years ago I bought a pretty premium record player for my in-laws for $79, but I simply don't have a place to put one at this point in my life. My music has all become iPod-ized. But when I get a bigger place or when the kids grow up, I'll be all over it.
That makes sense.

So don't get rid of your records, even if abgemacht wants them.

Blackberry works great with music.

If your record player was made 40 years ago,
and was a "decent" quality product when made, it'll probably last another 40 years,
or more.
The web is a great way to find "out of print" or extremely dificult to get service manuals
and parts information.

my most prized LP is a USA made (not Philipines ) double LP by Eric Clapton,
"Layla" by Derek and the Dominoes in mint condition

The difference between the Philipines and USA "pressings" of this album is that
the USA pressings used a higher quality of vinyl (or "plastic") to make the records.

@SD

Some of those sound appealing, but I think I'll pass for now. I'm having fun going around myself looking for records. (Yet another thing to do instead of my thesis).

@D33

What are you going to do when RIM goes out of business? Should we be concerned.

@Major

Let's hope!

Automatic Cancel
How come games that start with less than 7 players don't automatically cancel? If 2 or more countries don't even show up in a live game why does the system allow it be voted on? It seems like the countries that can get an immediate jump have no incentive to cancel.

Facebook Parenting, Or, How His Daughter Learned to Stop Bitching and Respect Her Parents
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kl1ujzRidmU
I was a right shit to my parents at times at 15, especially my father, sure, who isn't as a teenaged boy...but if I'd EVER done or said what she did, I'd have been parented and HOW...and I'd NEVER post something that disrespectful on Facebook like that...but--her father works for Information Technology, and she did that and thought it was smart? Good for him, I say, good parenting...agree?
