Who will win the Heisman?
Statistically, Griffin III should be a shoe-in.

Richardson would be the #2, but he isn't even in the top 5 in rushing this season.

I need a sitter. I'm in two games, both of them at least 1 and a half days per phase.

I apologize to the people I am playing against. Real life has become too hectic for me to continue to play here.

Disturbing trend
I'm playing in a few anon games (well, more than a few), and I've noticed that the game has changed over the years. It got better for a long time, then towards the end if this year, something has happened that has taken some fun away.

I always enjoyed playing games with forum posters and vets with high rankings. I'm not fantastic player, but usually hold my own and respect the game even in loss.
Recently, though, I've noticed a large disregard in respect. In multiple games, people are flat out insulting in their mode of play. Now I can handle the verbal onslaught, but it is a pathetic tactic that is usually gone by the time people get to vet status. Having find it more prevalent, I'm probably going to pare my games back, and possibly collect a list of players I no longer want to play with. I hate the fact that others do it, but I guess I understand it well.

I could blame it on gunboats and live games inflating the ranks of some players, but it may just be the "new generation" of webdiplomacy player.

Regardless, I'm finding myself disenchanted from the game.

It feels like the older people are leaving and younger, cockier, disrespectful kids have taken their place.

Anyone else noticing this? Am I the only one?

I think this is a somewhat ageist argument.

Also, you say that gunboats and live games may have inflated the ranks of some players, but I don't exactly think its relevant. Being disrespectul to fellow players and being good at the game aren't mutually exclusive (though I will say that they usually don't go hand in hand)
Don't see why verbal abuse is any worse than any other tactic. It worked wonders in one of my ongoing games. bottom line, are we children here that words really hurt? If you dot like it, as I have in other games where i felt the abuse was undeserved, just avoid the other player, or turn it around on him. I honestly do not see the problem.

This site is certainly more popular than it was 3 years ago when I started playing. Perhaps the popularity has attracted the attention of new players. It's good to introduce new players to the game, but it can cause some tension (as you've described).

I wouldn't lose hope though. I learned how to play diplomacy on this site and, save for a half dozen games, all of them have been played on this site. When I first started, I'm sure I was sometimes disrespectful to the game (probably unknowingly).

I'm with Knoxy on the idea that a game played in respect is just that much more fun to play. I've recently had to deal with a player that just got on my nerves the whole game through, barely reading my messages and looking for any reason to insult me or "troll" our message channel. It made the game terribly boring.
To me, the best games are the ones where you feel like congratulating the guy or the girl that just stabbed you. Games where anger rises fast and insults quickly follow are just not as entertaining. I will readily admit that it's a preference, and by no means a rule or the proper approach. And I will also say that age is sadly not always the issue. But it remains that I do have slowly built a list of players I enjoy facing. Thankfully, this site has enough of them to keep me entertained!

Of the guys who've posted, I've played Tom and Fort Knox already... and both are so on my list!

Santa: I've seen you get wild in the forums, but something tells me that you would not be unpleasant with someone who showed you respect in the game. The same can be said of Abge I'm sure (although the old fart does seem to have a temper at times...!!! ;-) ). Killer, I don't think we've had the pleasure yet.

I'm not going to disagree with me claiming ageism. Honestly, it is an easier example than explaining it is a respectful personality vs an disrespectful one. People know the stereotype, so it was a simpler comparison.

And my opinion of live games and gunboats are widely known. I did say that I COULD blame it on them, but think it is just new styles of player.
I can handle it, again (I'm a ref, I've heard worse) and it is a valid tactic. It is just that that tactic usually fails miserably having the player go down in flames. Not extremely successful.

There is also the player that refuses to respond after an attack. This used to be uncommon, now I'm finding it really common.
I wish I could give specific examples, but it would be obvious to players of the game and I'd not want to deal with possible meta.
Even when the game is over, I doubt I'll talk about it with specifics.

Only once has this game not been fun for me, and it was a selfish reason that I dealt with and was ok with a day later. Now I'm finding that I want several games to end and possibly just staying away from games except for the league and maybe one other game.

I just hate how the fun has been taken away. Maybe I just need a break from games. Maybe I'm just in too many?
I get unpleasant whenever it suits my interests, just like i stab when it suits my interests, the point of the game, as stabbers always proclaim, is to win at all costs, so why is salty language or an abusive posture ruled out.

I thought about it. Sadly, I have a crazy month ahead in RL (end of PhD thesis) and joining a game when I already have Deadzone in the Amazon (facing Babak and MM, amongst other amazing players) and Short Cut to Mushrooms (with Tom and JMO, two other fantastic players that are a riot to play with) seems like a bit much.

I'll set up a Cachimbo Invitational in January. Be ready.

Maybe you are just a bit burnt out? I can see why it would be frustrating to face those players, and I know the feeling. But it sounds like you aren't having much fun and maybe you do need a break from the game to bring back some of the passion.

In fact, the most antagonism I've found in a game is from the old guard.
fortknox (2059 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
Cach, I think you nailed it.

Trying to think of a fictitious example: getting hit by a country or two, trying to convince one of the to stop and they laugh and insult you. I could see me getting an email thinking there was meta going on by best buds for something like it, but these games were setup in the forum by players that have been around a few months and are very unlikely to have anything like that going on.
Cachimbo (1181 D)

Santa: You got me wrong.

I agree that hard words can sometimes be useful. I do tend to believe, however, that they more often reveal that a player has lost his grip on things. People generally start to yell and use foul language when shit gets out of hand. The more you yell at me, the more I know I got you where I want you.

Which is why the game is more fun if it's played with carefully chosen words: I can never be sure where you're at, and that's where the thrill comes from!
Personally, I find it fun when a player who you just stabbed resorts to name calling, it usually means you did a good job. Such as in the aftermath of this stab...

I can't disagree with Santa nor yonni.

And now that I think about it, I just laid some lumber on levelhead and PE when neither would stop hitting me, but that was a last resort and I wasn't upset at the attack, just trying to survive. They both were very respectful about it, I should add.
But the stuff I see is straight from the gate. Meh, I may be over analyzing it.

"Trying to think of a fictitious example: getting hit by a country or two, trying to convince one of the to stop and they laugh and insult you. Well thats different, and I don't condone that

Heh, the insult after a stab is very common and amusing, but I'm talking about just being the stab victim and insulted. Kicking a guy when he's down. Again, I can handle it, just surprised it is from top players and vets.

Yeah it can be fun. You will never have another chance to bore someone silly with your subject for 3-4 hours, enjoy it! Just a little tip if they give you corrections, which they do 90 % of the time, ask if your supervisor can check them (if willing!). The examiners might just agree, if they are not too extensive. Good luck.

I have noticed that there tend to be a lot of games that have only public messaging or no messaging at all... I was wondering why people would even play this type of variation in the first place. it seems to me to be equal to playing a game of poker with only half a deck of cards...
