300 are nothing for the winner of a tournament.
You can get the same points just by winning a 300 pot game.
Besides, points can't be a motive to join a tournament cause none cares about them.

And numbers are not set in stone obviously...they are just tools for demonstration..could be a higher betting price and winner could earn less or more..

Or hell it could be WTA but still just putting it out there.

@Riphen: Some of the tournaments on this website operate exactly under that fashion. For example, the summer gunboat tournament is paying out points in a similar manner: "prize pool of 840 being split amongst the top three competitors: 100-240-500"

However, as other people have pointed out, many players don't play in tournaments for the points, but rather for fun, glory, and quality opponents. Hence, it seems that most tournaments just use a 5 bet and don't bother with redistributing points at the end. Pride, glory, and qualification/promotion for future tournaments and leagues are its own reward.

Building a reputation of playing well and improving one's Ghost Rank are much more meaningful indicators than points anyways.

It is true that none care about points, but if entry fee is one beer and we have 50 players in the tournament than winner gets 50 beers...who can refuse that???

I couldn't care less about points and tournament play. I'm not a point farmer (or even a GR farmer). I play to porve to myslef I'm good at it and to have fun. and I play in the leagues to enjoy a touch of metagaming with people I respect and enjoy playing with and want to get to know better. If I'm playing for points, then they better equate to money and then it better be poker I'm playing.

Go to the URI Djan just listed. But most of the poeple on this site recognize it as a far better indicator of skill than points. Of course, some of us are a bit biased (I'm #50 on the GR list for last month).

The tournaments offer a collection of games against similarly dedicated players which leads to better quality of play.

That is why I join Alderian but it never seems like that is the case....I guess cause the Summer Gunboat is the only Tourney I have been in...and they allowed a lot of people.....and some of them CD I figured maybe there is a way to make them even more interested.

I agree with Alderian, there is lots of great leagues/tournaments on this site with good quality in it. Everything Draugnar said about his motives are also true in my opinion. Playing diplomacy for fun, because of interaction with different kind of people, because of strategic and tactical decisions you have to make, talking to people in foreign language (for me at least)...all this contribute to make the game interesting and fun. Farming points turn this into work, not fun...
