Ethics of replacing CDs
Would it be frowned on to find a replacement you know is pliable? In effect, is it okay to take the game into consideration in terms of your hunt for a replacement (or lack thereof)? I feel this is under-discussed, compared to, say, pauses.

How long is a 'process cycle' concerning a live 5 min/phase game?
I just ask because I joined such a game and ended up CDing against my will after waiting for 2 hours for it to start.

Diplomacy strategy articles?
I'm pretty familiar with openings... and general concepts for the mid and late game... and have read the articles available on these topics in the Diplomatic pouch (diplom.org) and the Diplomacy Archive (diplomacy-archive.com)... Where can I learn more about more specific strategies beyond the openings in 1901? Or, at least, where can I find more good articles beyond these two sources? Thanks!

who's afraid of the big bad wolf? EOG
gameID=63906

Congrats to Germany for his well deserved WTA strong second.

S01: France. Woot. My EOG will probably be a bit short, since I’m playing Quest for Glory 5 in the background at the same time. I’m going to try opening aggressively to the EC. It’s not how I normally play Gunboats (aggressively) or France (Anti-england) but what’s diplomacy without some fun?

A01: Interesting opening from Germany. And Russia, for that matter. Is War/Ukr just supposed to confuse us? Because there’s no difference between that and Mos > Ukr. Hope England bounces Germany out of Denmark, or that Germany sees my opening as friendly and doesn’t move to Bur. Or both. :-) I’m almost guaranteed Belgium though. Hope England moves to London, so that he can’t build there.

Builds: Interesting in the east. Very interesting. Can’t believe Italy is attacking Austria with the juggernaut forming. And not even taking Tunis. But Austria is behind enemy lines. That should make things interesting. I really hope Germany signals peace, especially with the very northern opening for England. Hope England builds in Edi. Would like to see one fleet, one army from Germany. Don’t want him getting too many fleets though. F Bre A Par for me. Want to move Eng > Irish and Bre > Eng if I can.

S02: Like the build from Italy. It’s helpful he’s so anti-Austrian. Hope Germany doesn’t bounce me out of Bur here. I don’t think he will. Like the Russian build as well. F St. Pete: Nice. Interesting build from Turkey – wonder how he’s going to get out of his area with only one fleet. Maybe he’s counting on Russian or Italian help.

A02: Convoy Bel to Wales and support Germany into Bel. Hopefully he sees that. I really hope England doesn’t get a build here, but it looks like he might. I’ll need to get a build quickly to hold off Germany if he wants to attack. It looks like he might.

Builds: Well, as expected. England gets a builds, but it’s not a disaster. I’m guaranteed either London or Lvp next turn, depending on how England builds. Perhaps both. :-) I really hope Germany doesn’t attack though. I can hold him off, at least for now. But I really would rather work with him, not against him. And it looks like Germany managed to get out of his niche after all. And Austria took Moscow, which makes things very interesting. Glad to see the east in chaos, and a strong Turkey that will keep Italy occupied.

S03: Hoping to get Lvp and London by moving Wal > Lvp and Eng > Lon, hoping that London will tap Wales. Doubt it will work, but it would be fantastic if I did. Por needs to get to Mars to protect against Germany, and Bur will hopefully bounce him in Pic. I don’t understand why he’s so incessantly hostile to me. Or maybe he won’t be after I gave him Bel. Like Turkey’s build of a fleet in Ank. More chaos in the east.

A03: Sigh, Germany. Expect a move to Gas from Bur, but can’t take the risk. Hopefully he’ll go for Paris or Mars for some reason. Actually, maybe I can take the risk. Hard guess here. Course, if he takes Gas, Mars is lost anyway. And hopefully I’ll get two builds in England, with a supported move from Lon to Wales. Not sure how that will work. Good luck me though – I’ll need it.

Builds: YES! A perfect turn for me. England is crippled, and I’ll get two builds to fight off Germany. Wow, that was lucky. I think two armies is probably the way to go, but I wonder if I can’t get away with a fleet in Mars. I’ll need more fleets soon…

S04: Well, my gains in England are precarious at best. But my mainland is easily defended at this point, Germany won’t get anywhere. Hopefully he’ll signal peace and move back. That will let me get my fleet out to England. At least I’ll delay a year until England loses Scandinavia, hopefully to Russia.

A04: Well, expect to lose London. Hope England loses two so he still has a disband. Can’t afford to lose anything on my mainland, so I’ll disband Irish when it comes.

S05: Not much to say here. Hold the line… Surprised Italy still hasn’t taken Tunis. He’ll likely come my way when he does. Not looking forward to that. :-/ Hope Turkey grows strong and stops him from doing that.

A05: Well, going to try to retake Burgundy so I can actually get somewhere with this. Christ Germany is being difficult. Why won’t he retreat? The fact that Austria is still in this is making me laugh up a storm though.

Builds: Christ, this is difficult. England keeps outguessing Germany, meaning he stays alive. I’m not impressed with Germany’s play at all. He should have used Pic to cover Bel there, not screw around in my territory. And Italy will likely turn on me this year with his two builds. Sigh.

S06: Moving NAO > Mao because of Italys incoming attack. This is just no fun at all… Although Italy’s tactics have been quite good this game. Surprising, given his attack on Austria. He has Austria’s play against Russia to thank for his success. Moving Lvp > Wales, in the hopes that I can get London. But my guess is I’ll have to disband that army and give up on my English campaign. Thanks Germany. I’m glad you wasted both of our time with your campaign to take Bur and Pic. That was really effective. We could be dominating this game if you would have picked up on my support holds in S02 and A02. Putting up draw vote to signal some kind of an alliance against Italy. I really don’t want a 7 way draw though… Hope Germany finally gets some kind of signal and supports me to London. England will be a power again (somehow) if he doesn’t. Although I don’t expect it – Germany’s play has been abysmal.

A06: Will be trying to stop Italy here. Maybe E/G will pick up on that and help. Would welcome an English fleet in MAO. England seems to be competent. I wish I hadn’t attacked him early, and instead gone after Germany, who seems to be a complete imbecile.

S07: Nope. F Kiel. Sigh. Germany – Italy is going to solo this if you attack me. That’s a guarantee. I swear to God, if you don’t help me set up the stalemate… If you want to eliminate England, at least make sure that I can hold the line without his fleet. Because that won’t be the case for long. Still astonished no one else is voting draw. Not even Austria…….

A07: Disbanding my burgundy army so that I can build F Bre to hold MAO (hopefully). Germany better help me out here. But I will absolutely throw this game to France should he make one more hostile move to me. What an idiot. I hope you know what WTA is.

S08: Well, congratulations, Germany. You just earned one, “I’m throwing this game to Italy”. Enjoy the victory, Italy. I hope you’re happy with your “strong second” PPSC play Germany. What a waste of my time. You have no clue how to play this game, do you?

A08: NOW you vote draw? NOW?!?! Italy’s already won this game – he can take 18 on the other side, now that he has Mars. I’ll have three centers after this year, and three fleets. And I’ll do everything I can to make sure he solos this.

Builds: Italian NMR. Interesting. Wonder if the 500 error messed him up. I got one. At any rate, he should still solo pretty easily. I’ll get at least Liverpool this year. May only have one unit left at the end though.

Builds, 09: Aww, Wish you had self bounced in Spain Italy. Would have kept all my fleets then. Still, two is good. Will keep Clyde and help England hold off Germany while Italy solos.

S10: If Germany is smart, we might be able to get a draw out of this. But he hasn’t been smart all game, so why start now?

A10: Nope, not smart. It’s ok though, because Italy didn’t mess up.

---------

Well done, Germany. Way to ruin a great game.
I'm writing this in 1908. Italy has just crossed the main stalemate line, and Russia reacts by attacking me. Germany attacks France, and France goes on a suicide mission to England! Seriously, guys, WTF?

I'm curious to find out who you all are. Right now my impression of you (especially Germany and Russia) is that you are lunatics.

Italy, on the other hand, has impressed me. It was a smart play to refrain from taking Tunis 1901, but to delay it until 1906 was genius! You so deserve to win this game, and I will try my best to help you achieve that.

It is now 1911. I have tried my best to throw the game to Italy, but strangely, he hasn't won yet... You had it handed to you on a silver platter, and still it takes like forever for you to actually win. I mean, in the final turn, all you need to do is support Arm-Sev, and support hold Marseilles. Then it's over.

And now it's over. I see France & England weren't such shabby players after all. In hindsight, that makes sense. You did play a decent game, but got screwed by Germany.

I'm surprised to see gramilaj as Italy. With such an amount of experience, one would expect you to have no difficulty playing this endgame. Connection troubles, perhaps?

Thanks for switching. And I didn't necessarily think Italy played badly at the end. I think he got 500ed once. But it was just a god awful game all round.

As Austria: my motto for Austria when playing gunboat is go big or go home. I'd rather gamble on two builds than slowly die with one. Once I saw that all 3 eastern powers were going against me, I tried to create opportunities for Turkey to expand and to slow down Italy and Russia. Failing at this, I decided to be a general nuisance to the Russian. That I did rather well. :)

Yes, I had that problem too. Ironically, I had one whilst composing this very forum post.

17 Jul 11 UTC
And ha. It was a fun fight between us, jmeyer. Wish we had wiped out Germany though, like I said. Game would have gone much differently. Sadly, it's imposible to know who the idiots are and who are the good players.
I think it's unfair to just blame Germany for this. I mean, look at Russia. He was incredibly incompetent. He flunked in 1901, and it took him years (literally!) to recover. And when he does, he goes on a crusade to capture Ankara!?
☺ (1304 D)
17 Jul 11 UTC
Well yeah. Russia was kind of an idiot. But Russia didn't give him the solo. If Germany were smart, we could have held my stalemate line and Italy only would have gotten to 17. And we could have wiped out England, and it would be a three way FGI draw.

Russia and Germany were equally stupid, but Germany's stupidity had more of a consequence.

Hey all, nice playing with you guys.

01- I decided to attack Austria when Russia signaled peace to Austria by not moving to Gal and made it into the Black Sea. France had opened anti English, and Tunis wasn't going to be under threat, so I just had to take dots off Austria and use those to keep Turkey bottled up until the RUssia decided to pile on. The Austrian move to Ukraine is great, and the Turkish army are both great. I think can get most of the Balkans. Serbia is my ultimate goal.

02 goes fine, no builds, sort of miffed my fall orders, but if I am forced out of Ionian I have a retreat to Tunis in F03. No such worries, as Turkey builds a fleet Black Sea and I'm happy with France's continued anti-English push.

03 Go Germany! I was nervous about France hitting the English successfully, but now I'll have time to hopefully finish Turkey before I turn around, happy to get that support from Tiurkey. Excellent guess from France with Gascony.

France's F Mar is no good, I had planned on using the army in Venice against Turkey with a convoy to Smy, but I'll make some trouble for France instead, hopefully keeping them pinned down and Tunis free.

04 Things are going well in the East, I have Serbia soon, Greece will soon follow. RA keep pushing their armies further North, which means I have a big opening if I can finish Turkey quickly. I think my decision to take the Aegean is correct, I want to keep a fleet in Black to cause RT tension.

05 Don't want Russia to get a build, so I walk into Bud, hopefully that doesn't turn him against me.

Two builds means it's time to go after France and pick up Tunis and get across the stalemate lines. At this point I'm trying to play safely and slowly, I don't want to spook the board.

06 Slow going against Turkey and France, who sees my attack coming. But Russia doesn't get a build again, good for me. And that fleet stuck in the North will hopefully entice them to move North. Germany builds fleet Kiel, and I don't have to have a shoving match in Tyrolia yet.

07 Playing it very safe, looping Greece all the way around rather than directly moving to Aegean-Eas. I have a good line against France, and I think I'll get Spain, Portugal and Mar with Germany English occupied. Germany doesn't take North Sea, which is really surprising to me, and will slow him down from getting to MAO. He also has builds in France, hopefully he keeps attacking them.

08 France is letting me walk into their centers, and Russia is attacking Turkey, both awesome. I get super lucky in the fall, my NMR doesn't really hurt me as Turkey decides to punish Russia for attacking me (just got distracted for a couple minutes, no 500 error :-/)) I see a strong solo possibility and start counting up to 18. Germany is so fleet invested I think I can get something in Russia and all of Iberia.

09 Start grinding it out, France and Turkey are working with me, so even with the RUssian turning around I have a great chance, hopefully I can get a fleet into the Black Sea, that will be vital. I am very surprised I don't face a bounce in Tyrolia.

10 Nerve wracking to lose Gal, I may lose the solo and get stopped at 17, but there's not a line in the middle and Turkey is still assisting. Wish I could give him a survive, but Sev is 18 for me.

GG all!

I Have An Honest Question Here...
This one's bugged me for a while, really, and I've just got to ask it:

If you believe God sent Jesus to die for our sins or that Jesus wanted to die for our sins and save us and all that...why? If he/they/both are God, ie, almighty, why not just "waive the debt," rather than self-mutilate? And why would either care at all? (and "because he loves us" is NOT a valid answer...somehow Hell + Pain On a Cross =/= LOVE to me...)
