Community Reinvestment Act
If you do not know about this act, first passed in 1977 during the Carter administration and updated significantly during the Clinton adminstration, you should because it has had enormous impact on the United States.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Dawkins, Hitchens, and The New Atheists Get Heir Turn
I'm going to try something different with this week's go-around, as I think a few people believe me to be overly-agressive in pushing my opinions and also because this is a topic I've put off doing for a while now, as not a fan of the New Atheist movement, but not knowledgable enough about the particulars to try and tackle it. So, I aim to be more the receiver here, and I ask two questions, both inside--and I'll get my education from you all. ;)

Even the USA intelligence agency is warning that we will be facing series water shortages by 2025. What got us out of previous depressions and recessions is that people started to consumed more. when labour unions get to run countries you get things like China...

I actually think supra state organisations (like the US, EU, and India) need to collectively bargain against the corporations (agreements on income/consumption taxes and corporate tax rates to then collectively bargain against corporations...) and then we can have labour unions which collectively bargain from the worker's point of view...

but this can be done as economic policy 'from on high'

"Even the USA intelligence agency is warning that we will be facing series water shortages by 2025." One...what is the USA intelligence agency? Please cite your source. Second...where the hell do you think the water is going to go??? When I hear we will run out of water I just have to laugh my ass off! If it comes right down to it, you build a few desalinization plants on the OCEAN, the big old endless supply of water. But, nobody is running out of water. In general, wells don't run dry, because aquifers refill (unless something huge occurs...) Generally speaking, it still rains and snows in the world, meaning water comes down from the sky after evaporating and....ugh, you should have learned the water cycle in like 2nd grade.

Running our of water....sheesh! Hysterical nonsense.

That being said, if you choose to build your community in, say, the middle of the desert and then you want to bitch about not having water, I will still laugh at you, and then insult you profusely.

I never said they should run countries. But unless every single, say, computer programmer is a member of the international computer programmers union then there will always be some indonesian guy will to do the work for half the union wage

thats all i'm saying.
You can run out of water krellin. Well, run out of drinkable water. The problem with desalinization plants is they require power to run, a LOT of power to run. It is not feasable to desalinise enough water for the entire population of the world and have enough energy leftover to power people's houses and industries.

And although wells refill, that takes time. We consume water at a rate faster than it comes back. That said, water shortages are not our biggest problem, we'd be out of feuls before we'd be out of water. We'd also have more nuclear waste than we could handle, and have some of the older containment units falling apart.

The fish stocks are running out though, they're right about that. And no, I do not know what "USA Intelligence Agency" is, I assume its a research company this party founded.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

not running out of water, 'a series of water shortages' that could mean in africa, australia, of middle america.

Either way, American intelligence agencies know what current usage is and what the limit of this resource is (where usage outstrips the water cycle, and the natural aquifer happens to act as a large reservoir which has been tapped) - this is of concern to security agencies because people will fight over water if there is a shortage and no economic solution has been found...

desalination plants run on energy, serious amounts of energy. You also need huge amounts of energy to clean waste water, but that's just another option...

Seriously the *BEST* way to get clean water is by using the SUN to shine on a large surface area of water (~66% of the earth's surface will do) and allow evaporation to separate the water from the salt/dirt.

This is no small amount of energy, and we have literally no other way of harnessing this amount of solar energy. We can NOT provide a water supply for the global need by some technological means without the energy to invest in it.

Also you need to be able to collect rain water, and guess what! changing weather patterns have lead to major flooding in australia this year, hurricane katrina? oh yes, a rather poor decade for weather patterns and 'useful' water supply.

@krelin, please think before you speak, that is all.

'I never said they should run countries. ' - true, i just think China is a good example to consider when contrasting the dynamics possible between labour union/state/corporations, etc.... but yes, you're right, but computer programmers require education, and when ever single indonesian guy can access this education then the world will likely be a better place... imho

I like this party's philosophy though, that we should be maintaining the current output while using the efficiency to decrease the input instead of using the efficiency to increase output while maintaining input. However, it is a USA party, so it doesn't matter because only Republicans and Democrats can get elected.

USA? who cares, we can use the same kind of policies to change the world over here in Europe :)

http://www.efficiencyshifting.org/

how and ever, are there no alternative to the democrats and republicans? some independants get elected at some levels, right?

or you can push for the democat and rearpublicans to adopt these policies...
Unfortunately there isn't an Australian version of this party. The 6-hour working day policy would go down so well here too...
I'm completely serious, I wouldn't be surprised if a party called "Work Less Party" got elected in many levels of the government immediately after a single advertising campaign.

It's perfectly fine if someone wants to work 32 hours a week. Let them start a company that does that. Of course they will be destroyed by someone owning a company that works 40 hours a week because of more output, the ability to fill bigger orders etc.
Ever wonder why there are so many lawyers? There is no limit to the number of billable hours that lawyers can put in during a month. People who want to bust their behinds and be as productive as they can possibly be become lawyers or another profession that doesn't arbitrarily limit output in anyway shape or form.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

em, yeah, unless you have more than one person in the company... what?
You just employ more people and pay them less to compensate...

Working more hours is how you get where you want to be.
Ben Franklin said a machine wears out from rust a lot quicker than from use.
Words of wisdom.
I don't know what to say, that doesn't even make sense. Do you suggest a 24-hr working day? Somehow I think the reverse applies to people.

If you want to work the same hours, you get paid overtime, which as you know gives higher pay. The incentive for the companies would be to employ as many people as possible (within reason) to cut costs so nobody works overtime and they don't have to pay them extra for it. I think the lack of jobs problem just got fixed.

Think before I speak? Ha ha haaaa! Says all the fear mongers. My entire life I have heard how we are goig to run out of water.....funny, 40 years late we still haven't run out of water. In fact, in the US, we've done a fine job of cleaning up waterways from the 70's. Blahblah blah..same shit as global warming - skewed, cherry-picked data taht has nothing to do with reality. Global warming...oh...except the last decade has shown a decline in temps, and ice shelves, in truth, are growing....unless you read the faked/forged data from the ICP and friends (who have a vested, personal financial interest in fear-mongering...).

So....water shortages....<rolls eyes> I DO think before I speak. I think about all of the fake data out there, I think of 4 decades of listening to morons say we are running our of water, nd have yet to see it occur.

Regarding the sun cleaning water....happens without fail every year, almost every day, when it rains, when it snows in the mountains and then flows down into the rivers when it melts.

Tat stupid people want to live in the desert (California...cough cough...) and then bitch about not having water is not a problem with water....it is a problem with idiots living where it is not natural to live. It would be like building a house on the bottom of the ocean and then bitching because of the scarcity of free oxygen to breath, even though the planet is wrapped in it.
^This argument is more well thought through and agreeable than the last. The only thing I have to add is that both sides in any dispute will cherry-pick data that has nothing to do with reality. Both sides will fake/forge data and both sides will claim the other side's data is wrong or questionable. That said, I do agree, most environmental concerns are really not concerning at all.

It just so happens that what is in the interests of these environmentalists is also in the interests of my wallet, so I think its worth listening to them. (conserving power)

Limiting the work week to 32 hours holds back individuals that want to do more, but more productive. Paying overtime at 32 hours will simply drive jobs to other locations, and limit opportunities for individuals who want to work hard.
Limiting work hours is just like raising the minimum wage. A total job killer.
It would increase jobs and reduce the amount each person gets paid (unless they are at the minimum wage). It has the complete opposite effect of the minimum wage rising. In fact, those that actually work hard would get paid MORE because they are working overtime. The minimum wage only kills jobs that aren't worth having because you will still be living in the same conditions as the unemployed.

Please consider the general living standards we had with the 10-hour day then the standards with the 8-hour day. You will notice that people were generally better off. Perhaps you misunderstand that this is meant to be across the country, rather than a few select businesses.

Again, under your logic a 24-hr workday still appears to be what you want. What makes 8 hours so special? And how does limiting the workday to six hours hold back individuals from working harder anymore than eight hours? People get paid overtime now don't they? Why would it be any different? In any case, hard workers would be rewarded more.

How would decreasing the work week from 32 hours to 40 hours increase jobs? Why would any corporation in its right mind locate a factory in a jurisdiction where overtime began at 32 hours instead of 40 hours or even 50 hours in another jurisdiction?
Raising the minimum wage eliminates jobs for unskilled workers like teenagers.
Just what we need no jobs for teenagers.
Which is exactly what we have right now.
Because perhaps they want skilled workers not factory slaves.

Kids...
I hate the way that they get really quiet when you're putting in your diplomacy moves and when you get up to check on them (because quiet kids are synonymous with kids getting into trouble) and you find them throwing things into the toilet.

Yesterday I woke up after hearing the kids play in their room at 5:30 to find that one of them took off their diaper and thought it was a novel idea to do various things with their poop and top it off by peeing on his crib.
