For those of you out there who don't have the time to devote to faster paced gunboats, we need three more players for a 12 hour turn gunboat. Starts in six hours.

Here? Last one I saw failed miserably and cost my Turkey dearly because the betrayed Austria still tried to come after me until it was too late.

I haven't tried it but I saw it done successfully here:

link? I always try to pull this off when I'm Italy, and sometimes when I'm Austria too, but I've never found a taker.
Draugnar (0 DX)
18 Nov 10 UTC
I'd link but the game is still ongoing and anonymous. I'll wait.

heh yeah it did

I'll be waiting with baited breath, Draug. Was your's textbook version? The one coffeebean linked had Austria bouncing in Gal the first turn instead of taking Gal and Rum.

Since I set it up I can admit I'm part of it:

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=40640

I assume Draug is talking about the Rage game for Teh Fail
Draugnar (0 DX)
18 Nov 10 UTC
Textbook down to the treachery. Austria even did a good job of feigning "outrage" initially only to get stabbed and have real outrage.

Yep, that's it.

Oh wait, *this* game is one where I'm dead, so I can bring it up:

Did it in 5 minute/phase game. It was an offer that Austria couldn't turn down after moving into Tri.

Yes, in that last game, it did not work so hot for me. But, it has worked before.

It was this one.

18 Nov 10 UTC
@ strat: Austria getting no builds the first year in 41126 really messed that up. Should have supported Rum and had Italy S Alb to Gre...but then again, it doesn't look like Italy was intending to play it all the way out anyway.
Draugnar (0 DX)
18 Nov 10 UTC
And AndyBer was Austria.
Draugnar (0 DX)
18 Nov 10 UTC
So now we know Strat was Germany. Andy was Austria and I was Turkey.
Draugnar (0 DX)
18 Nov 10 UTC
I will admit it was an enjoyable game, even if my time in it was short.
I think my first game on this site as Turkey (and my first time playing Turkey in like 15 years), I was on the receiving end of a Key Lepanto. It boggled my mind, and was more or less no fun whatsoever.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
18 Nov 10 UTC
The only Key Lepanto I've seen was in my very first game and was pulled off by a single person playing both Italy and Austria.
trip (696 D(B))
18 Nov 10 UTC
It doesn't seem things end well for both Italy and Austria when it works. None of the links to finished games above have both even surviving.
Draugnar (0 DX)
18 Nov 10 UTC
@Tolstory - Well, that's hardly a true Key Lepanto when someone is cheating and controlling both nations.
trip (696 D(B))
18 Nov 10 UTC
...but it should make it an effective one.

the key lepanto, like the regular lepanto, is almost always sniffed out and can be defended by turkey.

Personally, if you want a crazy italy/aus opening, I'd suggest the 4 fleet or 4 army opening.

4 fleet == italy. Move ven-tri, austria allows it, then aus reclaims tri with a 2-on-1, italy disbands, and with that disband + tunis, builds 2 fleets.

4 army = aus. The opposite, basically. Tri-ven allowed by italy, italy pops, with pop + serbia, build 2 armies.

Italy with an extra fleet, or austria with an extra army (and the alliance between the two countries) can be huge early game...
That Key Lepanto Draugs and strat discussed probably would have worked better if it weren't for the fucking moron playing France that screwed it up and then kept Austria alive an extra year by convoying to Marseilles and then supporting the Austrian army in Piedmont (which was his last unit!) into Marseilles instead.
trip (696 D(B))
18 Nov 10 UTC
@ Draug; ava has only pulled it off face-to-face...

@ fortknox: I like both of those.

@Pres Eden -- ah yes, the support to the Austrian army instead of the French army was classic epic fail

I pulled it off in my first ever game online. I was Italy, and Austria proposed it to me -- I had to look it up! I think it ended up being a AEIG draw, with nobody willing to stab his ally. Sorry, no link -- it was on BOUNCED.

@Rancher - nervous trigger finger, eh?

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=39527 is one that worked out OK - as AH I had ample opportunity to stab Italy for massive gain. I agreed with him early in the game that I would not, and I wanted to keep my word, if only to keep Italy guessing about my style since we play together fairly often.

@PE, I was pleasantly surprised to be installed in Marseilles, though of course by that time my defeat was a foregone conclusion.

AndyBer beat me to the post of 39527. It was, like he said, an OK result (grr to England...).

I really think that the Key Lepanto favours only Italy
Italy have nothing to lose with Key Lepanto, and could even stab Austria if they aren´t facing a Jugg or if he cut a deal with Russia.
Austria in the other end, have an army near all his centers and have to face both Turkey and Russia if there is a Jugg.
Hardly a balanced alliance.
spyman (424 D(G))

I had a great game playing the key lepanto as Italy, and we played it true with no double cross. It can be a great opening, but the trouble is it is very well known and easy to counter if you are wise to it.

As per the North American Union thread. If it were to happen how would you want it to happen? I am a Canadian, but I really like the US, so I would be in favour of this merger - under certain conditions.

So lately on the forum things have been getting a little heated. The Michael Vick thread got a bit personal, and the thread about Conspiracies crossed every possible line. I think we need to establish a set of rules for use both in-game and in the forum to ensure that WebDip keeps a certain level of class.

Veterans/Armistice Day
On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, the guns fell silent. Our forebears thought they would be silent forever. Despite the failure of universal peace, it is the thing that all decent people, Civilian, Soldier, Sailor, Marine, and Airman alike should all aspire to.

statistics
One cool thing about Richard Sharp's book The Game of Diplomacy (http://www.diplom.org/~diparch/god.htm) is his frequent use of statistics: he refers to how many British and American postal games have been played and how many games each power won, how often each power was eliminated (even how often they were eliminated by a certain year); which countries tend to do well when which other countries do well; etc. Has anything like that been attempted for WebDiplomacy? How hard would it be?
