Canada/US Union
As per the North American Union thread. If it were to happen how would you want it to happen? I am a Canadian, but I really like the US, so I would be in favour of this merger - under certain conditions.

WebDiplomacy Ethics
So lately on the forum things have been getting a little heated. The Michael Vick thread got a bit personal, and the thread about Conspiracies crossed every possible line. I think we need to establish a set of rules for use both in-game and in the forum to ensure that WebDip keeps a certain level of class.

Veterans/Armistice Day
On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, the guns fell silent. Our forebears thought they would be silent forever. Despite the failure of universal peace, it is the thing that all decent people, Civilian, Soldier, Sailor, Marine, and Airman alike should all aspire to.

statistics
One cool thing about Richard Sharp's book The Game of Diplomacy (http://www.diplom.org/~diparch/god.htm) is his frequent use of statistics: he refers to how many British and American postal games have been played and how many games each power won, how often each power was eliminated (even how often they were eliminated by a certain year); which countries tend to do well when which other countries do well; etc. Has anything like that been attempted for WebDiplomacy? How hard would it be?

That site should be called "Why anyone who calls Obama left-wing is out of their fucking minds"

I'm not sure if that website has a liberal or conservative agenda, but I am sure that it's just spin, spin, spin on every example I saw and so can be safely ignored.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
17 Nov 10 UTC
Spin? Bias? I saw a list of cold hard facts. All of them were cited to 'credible' mainstream news sources. Are facts to be ignored because one doesn't like the way they're presented?
Invictus (240 D)

"Pushed for a 5 year prison term for Charles Lynch, the operator of a medical marijuana dispensary, legal under California law"

It's still illegal under federal law. Obama is enforcing federal law. That's what he should do. Good for him.

"Revived "Prompt Global Strike" weapons system, considered too controversial by Bush Administration"

Conventional ballistic missiles. The worry is that the Russians would think there's a nuke on them, when really it's just an absurdly powerful conventional weapon. There's a discussion to be had here, but framing it as him taking on a policy that even the Bush administration found too controversial is, shall we say, more prejudicial than probative.

"Successfully prosecuted child soldier Omar Khadr using evidence obtained through torture"

Terrible story, but this kid was fighting American soldiers on the battlefield. Again, it's a terrible situation ,and because it's so terrible it deserves mroe than a blurb on a website with an obscene name.

That's kind of the whole thing wrong with the site. It presents the facts in an overly simplisctic way which makes understanding the real issues more difficult. Therefore, safely ignored.
Saffron (100 D)
17 Nov 10 UTC
Not trying to get into this debate but your first paragraph is incorrect. Medical marijuana is indeed legal under California law. The recent proposition was seeking to make it's recreational use legal and that failed.
Invictus (240 D)
17 Nov 10 UTC
No, you read the paragraph wrong. It's still illegal under federal law. It's not that hard to understand.
Saffron (100 D)
17 Nov 10 UTC
So I did.

"That's kind of the whole thing wrong with the site. It presents the facts in an overly simplisctic way which makes understanding the real issues more difficult. Therefore, safely ignored."

Well, if you wanted more information on any of the facts, the site provided a link to a news story that gave all the gory details. However, I daresay you are not the target audience for this site. But for folks who don't follow politics particularly closely, are of a 'liberal' bent, and still think Obama is The Messiah, this site does a great job of shattering that illusion. For what it intends, I think it does an excellent job - quick and to the point for people who aren't going to sit around and read a 30 page white paper.

Haha, Sic, you know that the site is a retort to the original site:
http://whatthefuckhasobamadonesofar.com/

Yeah, it's missing the "in". Now view Obama's actions through the other lens. There are liberals, and there are conservatives, and then there are straight pessimists like you. There's good and bad and even more in between.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
17 Nov 10 UTC
So wait the site without the "in" is pro Obama right, it's supposed to refute the people who say he hasn't done anything?

Now this site Sic posted is supposed to say like "oh look at all these awful things Obama's done"

I have to admit, it's not convincing me. I'm with Invictus for the most part.

As per unusual.
Chrispminis (916 D)
17 Nov 10 UTC
Yeah, the one without the "in" is the first website, and it was designed because a lot of people were quite unaware of what Obama had really done. The second was designed as a rebuttal, that's why the buttons ("That's cool, what else you got?") don't make much sense in the context of negativity.
Sicarius (673 D)
18 Nov 10 UTC
hmm wasnt aware the site was a parody of another.

Anyway I'm not a pessimist, I'm a realist.
Chrispminis (916 D)
18 Nov 10 UTC
I'd bet that just as many people think themselves realists as people think themselves better-than-average drivers.
Invictus (240 D)
18 Nov 10 UTC
Biff, you're many things, but you're absolutely not a realist.

I'm a pessimist :(
The worst can happen, and should be planned for, but generally won't happen.
Tolstoy (1962 D)

The nice thing about being a pessimist is that you can never be disappointed (because when you're wrong, it's a *good* thing).

North American Union, good or bad idea?
Am I the only American whom actually thinks a union of North America is a great idea? Most of my fellow Americans seem to think it's the stuff of radicals or a vast conspiracy, but I'd love to see it happen.
