Cheating
I don't understand why people would want to cheat at games where money isn't involved. If we had to buy our initial 100 D with a credit card purchase, and buy more every time we got down to zero, then sure, I'd understand. But cheating at a recreational game? It's not like there's corporate sponsorships on the line or anything. Does anyone understand the mindset behind multiaccounting?

UK - fixed term parliments
Could someone help me understand the current proposals?
Maniac (189 D(B))

I'm a labour supporting guy who happens to agree that the only outcome of our recent election was for LibDems to form a solid coalition with the Torys, and I have no problem with that at all.

But I don't get this 55% being needed to bring down a government. I can understand why the Tories would want to ensure that their coalition wouldn't fold if the LibDems walked away but surely they can pass a law like this to kep them in power. What happens in the future when other coalitions are formed with different percentages? How can they pass a law so quickly when no one suggested this prior to the election?

I welcome fixed term parliments and the PM giving up his right to pick a date, but surely if a governing party or coalition can't carry a confidence vote of 50% +1 then a new election should be called, this 55% rules just seems so wrong.

*surely they can't pass

Pre-election the situation was that the parliament ended on one of two conditions
i) Five years passed from the date of the previous election or
ii) The prime-minister chose to resign. (This was the norm and could be triggered by a vote of no-confidence or just a whim)
The new proposal is that the parliament would now end on one of two conditions
i) Five years pass (as before, but now this will be the norm)
ii) A vote of 55% of the house of commons
If the prime minister were to resign (on a whim, or as the result of a no-confidence vote) then there would be an opportunity for the leader of the opposition to form a government (basically we'd see a similar situation as occurred immediately after this election with parties trying to work out a coalition). If no party could do that then I would expect that they would all vote for an election.

Thanks -Parallel - but that's worse than I thought - you mean if we have one or two bye-elections and the LibDems wanted to switch sides, they could force a no confidence vote and then side with Labour and form a Lib-Lab coalition government without calling a general election? This road is thwart with danger.
Why not just, 5 years or failure to carry a confidence vote of 50% +1

You can switch sites in theory (and in Diplomacy), but that is not how coalition works. When you start you make a coalition agreement on the points that are for both parties important. There might be some open points, that can be handled in parliament. If you don't stick to coalition agreement or switch site, you are 'unreliable'. It looks like in favor of Labour to accepts such switch, but it is more likely that Labour would reject and opt for new elections. With election the Libs will go down, because of unreliability and Labour would be the big winner. If they accept the switch, they are hostage of the Libs.

Troublesome, is the speed in which the coalition is made. If the coalition agreement is not detailed enough, this may lead to problems.

Labour will only accept a switch when the Tories misbehave. And that is exactly the purpose.

The new proposals mean all parliaments will be 5 years and that 55% will be needed to dissolve them, which is an issue as you can end up with a government having less than 50% support yet the opposition not having enough support to overthrow it.
Octavious (2701 D)

It is in reality completely meaningless. In theory if the Tories are abandoned by the Lib Dems they would still be able to prevent an election as they have 47% of the seats. In practice if our glorious government have cocked things up badly enough to collapse the coalition there's a snowball's chance in hell of Call Me Dave keeping his entire party in a united block. The only change of any substance is that Dave can no longer collapse the government all by himself.

I didn't think he could do that before either?

I don't know what to think about either proposal. I don't think that they will be really beneficial or harmful.

The idea of a non-50% vote in a parliament is not new- look at the US Senate's filibuster laws.

If Socialism Worked, Greece...
Wouldn't be broke. Germany wouldn't be rioting about having to bail Greece out. The global economy wouldn't be tanking today in response. Come on, Socialists - please explain why Greece is a financial pit instead of the Paradise you claim Socialism brings to all!

Corporations
How do you discourage a corporation from misbehaving? The ones that feel the pain of fines or punishment are generally the stock holders and the employees. The ones responsible for the actions of the corporation are the CEO, President and Board Members. If they have already gained a lot of money, and will be hired at the next company with no problem, they have no reason not to maximize their own profits on a short term basis.

T20: Mike Hussey astounds world
Not really much to this, just how amazed I am. I had been following the match, but with 4 overs to go I left uni & returned home. Logged onto BBC sport just now to confirm Englands opponents for the final to find I'd missed the most impressive T20 innings in history...

Diplomacy Tips?
I used to play diplomacy in high school several years ago, and I only just discovered this site.

I'm just wondering if there are any other good sites or other resources for diplomatic strategies? My googling seems to get the word 'diplomacy' confused...

trouble with convoying armies in World map
Hi, I have some trouble when I try to convoy armies to distant territories: I got errors like " Parameter 'toTerrID' set to invalid value '53'. " and red punctuation points.
I tried to empty my cache, and to wait, but it didn't work.
my browser is Internet Explorer 8.
do you know how I could solve the problem?
