Technical Glitch
When i tried to open the home page i got an error message saying line 404 was corrupt and giving me this: home/.mio/webdiplomacy/webdiplomacy.net/lib/html.php, and it stayed after i tried a couple more times

I only copied that part as i put it into Google and it gave me a link to the forums but on a very old page (300 and something). When i then tried to open it again it was fine. Anybody know what this was?

The Most Hilarious In-Game Conversation EVER!
This happened in a live game that just finished. gameID=28817
I'm talking to Italy, I'll post the conversation from the game inside. I think I was being unfairly abused... Until the end that is. By then I just couldn't resist.

Censorship on the Forum...?
I noticed recently a few threads that have gone missing. I believe I have repeatedly seen messages from Mods they they will not be censoring the forum, and nothing in either thread was particularly bad... So what's up?

Small points pickup?
Italy with 7 SCs has left a game that is moving toward a 3- or 4-way draw. It's public press, so you can see how the game has progressed.

Ugh, the situational rules...
If a fleet convoys an army to attack a territory, and there is one unsupported piece in that territory, is it dislodged (as a result of both a fleet and army attack)?
In other words, is a convoy order also an attack order?

A game is outed as having meta-gamers in it, and the Mod says game will be cancelled?

Declaring Victory?
What is the advantage of declaring victory at 18SCs... surely if you have the upper hand and all is going to plan, just start taking more and more until you win the whole pot. Is the fear that if you do that you are likely to lose your grip on victory or something? Whenever I've played with others they declare victory the instant they get 18 SCs, it just seems strange to me
BartSimpson (0 DX)

sometimes its nice to win with more than the required 18.... but in WTA if you don't plan the final lot of sc capture, you automatically win anyway.
For PPSC, it's a little easier for me at least to hold off taking the final bunch, cos everyone knows regardless if they survive they get SOME share of the pot....
ODaly (236 D)

The thinking behind victory at 18sc's is that once you have over half of the board, you're essentially unstoppable and the rest of the game is foregone for the sake of inevitability.

In PPSC, are the points even awarded for winning with more that 18 SCs?
orathaic (1009 D(B))
11 May 10 UTC
in PPSC you only get 18 sc worth of points not matter how many centres you end the game with.

Also i don't understand the question because the game ends once one player reaches 18 supply centres, you don't declare victory, the rules state you have won. (and while the board game rules don't include the points system we use here Winner-Takes-All would be closest to the real game - i usually try to avoid the Popints-Per-Supply-Centre variant)
Jamiet99uk (873 D)

@ Orthaic: Nicklala has not won any games, so presumably he was under the impression that you could 'declare' victory.

Nicklala - the system automatically ends the game once someone gets up to 18 SCs. It is not possible to continue playing after this point. The only way to end with more SCs than 18 is to capture multiple SCs in the final turn.

It used to be the case that, on this site, in a PPSC game, you got more points for finishing with 19 SCs than 18, however that is no longer the case.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

I suspect that Jamiet is right there.
Draugnar (0 DX)

And as an additional clarification, the rules of the boardgame state the player wins at 18 SCs, not whenever he decides to declare victory. To do otherwise would be a variant.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

There should be a "Declare Victory" button. The whole game would boil down to hitting it first.
TAWZ (0 DX)

Declare Victory button ?? That would be fun....lol
Emperor Ming (0 DX)
11 May 10 UTC
I'm all in with a "Declare Victory" button. But it should be non-binding placebo-like button which gives a big emote to all the remaining players that says, "AUSTRIA HAS DECLARED VICTORY!" And that's all it would do. I would be interested to see how many times victory would be declared over any one given game.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
11 May 10 UTC
Surely it wouldn't be any different to typing in "I declare victory".

Although newbies might get confused by it...
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
11 May 10 UTC
Ghost, it's a button; those are much more official.
Emperor Ming (0 DX)
11 May 10 UTC
True...I was thinking about that. But there might be something more entertaining about it being an "official" button that players could push instead of just victory message.

I know it's impossible, but I have this scenario in my head where, once the button is pushed, an audio file is also played where some manly guy shouts the victory message Mortal Kombat style. It makes me giggle, on the inside.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

I think the main questions have been answered, but there is one more point that should be touched on.

Just because someone has over half the centers, doesn't mean they could sweep the whole board.

There are plenty of stalemate lines that require less than 17 centers/units. So you could stalemate an area while the other player has more than 17 centers/units. I believe in the past some have pointed out that England can form a stalemate involving MAO and Portugal as long as France, Germany, and Russia are out of the game.

Portugal, MAO and IRI will hold Portugal and the British Isles against any Italian/Austrian/Turkish coalition
Parallelopiped (691 D)

With Bar,StP and Den you can also hold Nwy,Swe,Den and StP
orathaic (1009 D(B))
11 May 10 UTC
yes, but holding out with no chance of gaining territory beyond the line doesn't count as winning, and in this situation (where you have a stalemate) you have to decide what to do - victory to the 18+ is one option - especially in a once-off game where there are no points to be split between the winers (there a draw would not be acceptable even on ppsc division of the spoils...)
Alderian (2425 D(S))
11 May 10 UTC
I was pointing that out because I often see people say something along the lines of once you get to 18 you should be able to clear the board because you are so powerful. So I was just pointing out that is not the case. Getting 18 means you have the majority, but doesn't mean that you would be able to get every center if the game kept going.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
11 May 10 UTC
And there are a number of times when you can hit 18 knowing you'd overstretched and would be defeated if the game played on

"I know it's impossible, but I have this scenario in my head where, once the button is pushed, an audio file is also played where some manly guy shouts the victory message Mortal Kombat style. It makes me giggle, on the inside."

I was picturing more like when you push the button a 'Mission Accomplished' Banner drops down behind you. :-D
"The thinking behind victory at 18sc's is that once you have over half of the board, you're essentially unstoppable and the rest of the game is foregone for the sake of inevitability."

I agree, and not much fun for anyone else either.

Victory at 35 SCs!

JECE (1248 D)

nicklala: They changed this some months back. You cannot take more than half the pot in a PPSC game. If you capture more than 18 SC's, the extra points will be divided proportionally among the other survivors.

TRADITION!
"And how do we keep our balance? That I cna tell you in one word- TRADITION!" -Tevye from "Fiddler on the Roof." I don't agree with all of them, but I treasure ALL of my Jewish traditions, a link to my past and family (some who, fitting the end of the play, came from Russia, appropriately enough.) What are some of YOUR culture's traditions, and why do you treasure them so?
