User Name Change
Is it possible to change my user name? As pointed out in a previous thread, my name is a bit odd. If so, can I keep my stats and games I'm involved in?
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Only Kestas can sort that for you sorry.

Also, re the private message: http://webdiplomacy.net/profile.php?userID=3075
mdrltc (1818 D(G))

Ahh, ok, Thanks. Should I send a private message to Kestas?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
07 Jan 10 UTC
Well you can do, although I don't know how long you'd have before getting a response.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Your name doesn't seem that odd to me. There are some crazy names out there. One guy's user name is "..." and there are plenty of other odd ones.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
07 Jan 10 UTC
But I certainly understand wanting a more usable/pronounceable name. Just saying it is by far not the oddest around.

cool thread idea though: top names we WISH we had thought of. If I had a do-over i'd choose "Object Lesson" :)
figlesquidge (2131 D)
07 Jan 10 UTC
Figlesquidge. The only thing I would consider doing differently would have been putting a 2nd g in, to be figglesquidge. It doesn't look anywhere near as neat, but then the pronunciation would be as I currently use (fig- gle -squ - idge ). I tend to prefer the more delicate latin sounding names, and so if I can't use figlesquidge (eg if you have more than one character in your group) I go for Alacavre.

I like Gnome de Guerre's ID. It makes me think of that travel website Gnome. ;-)

Do you mean expedia.com which has the lawn gnome for a spokesperson?
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))

Hmm Im not really sure, no-one wants to have to relearn names or wonder whether they know someone under a different name. In the past I've always said usernames are permeanent, but then again it's quite a new account... Not sure, are people unanimously in favor of this?
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
08 Jan 10 UTC
Hmm, If I had that option I would probably change it to Steve-kun or Steevo-kun (since it's a pet name some of my female friends use to reference me) but then again Steevo-kun is already taken and I like my current username. StevenC. , that username is just me. Thirdly, I don't really like to come up with pizzazzy usernames....

Kestas, I think we should keep it how it is now. As you said, no one wants to relearn usernames, certainly I don't. : )
wydend (0 DX)
08 Jan 10 UTC
I agree with StevenC. I chose a boring username (it being just the first six letters of my last name) yet I know that if we had the option to change our name I would just want to change it every week. It would just be confusing and frustrating trying to keep track of who is who. I think that the system works fine now. After all, it's just a username.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
08 Jan 10 UTC
Okay then, that's fair enough
If I had an option I'd change my name to simply Zaza instead of the fancy shmancy UpPeRcAsE LoWeRcAsE.
spyman (424 D(G))

wydend, I always thought your name was quite humerous.
StevenC. (1047 D(B))

spyman,

So you see it too, eh? : )
spyman (424 D(G))
08 Jan 10 UTC
I mean humorous.
spyman (424 D(G))
08 Jan 10 UTC
StevenC, well yeah, I thought it was intentionally funny.
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
08 Jan 10 UTC
I actually didn't see it at first. Shame on me.... : )
wydend (0 DX)
08 Jan 10 UTC
@spyman: I've never thought about it until you brought it up, but I can see how it could be viewed as humorous. I'm glad that the first part of my last name can make an unintentionally strange but kind of funny username.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
08 Jan 10 UTC
Yeh, I'd let him. As you say, he's not been here long.
mdrltc (1818 D(G))
11 Jan 10 UTC
Well, I'd appreciate the name change, but would understand if not allowed. If not allowed, I'll just pretend it's one of those vowelless Finnish or eastern European names that nobody can pronounce.
Draugnar (0 DX)

So what does mdrltc stand for?
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Mini donuts rarely lead to coronaries?
Many dangerous rodents like tailgating cars?
Have you PMd Kestas?
mdrltc (1818 D(G))

I did PM Kestas, no response as of yet. I'm patient.

Great, well he's (understandably) been spending most of his webDip time on the code structure rather than site management, but hopefully he'll get back to you when he's free.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
11 Jan 10 UTC
I'm sure you have, but make sure he knows what name you want to have instead.
If you're unsure if its taken or not there's a search feature linked from the help page you can use to check.

I think everyone should be allowed one name change in their WebDip life and the old name shown on their profile. I would also like to change my name.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
12 Jan 10 UTC
That doesn't sound fair to me martinck - some people have been here a long time and it is foreseeable that the site will still be running in several years time. By then people who change their name now may feel it should be changed again. However maybe that would be fair enough: you may change your name within your first month of membership (before anyone knows it anyway) or after a year since last change.

Nb: this is just a suggestion, I'm quite happy with it as it is.
Or changes that won't confuse previous identities. If you don't have an identity yet, then any change would be justified, in my opinion. mdrltc could add vowels so no is confused, figle could add another g, and I could simplify my name. The new players could choose what they want.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Jan 10 UTC
As long as the last name used is in the profile and we don't allow rapid changing (once every X months or something) then I think any new name would be fine.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
12 Jan 10 UTC
I guess so, but is it really worth the time required to add the feature?
Oh, and Zaza: I wouldn't add a g - it doesn't look as neat and there are so many places that would need changing anyway
martinck1 (4464 D(S))
12 Jan 10 UTC
@figlesquidge

Yes, I think your idea of a change max once a year is a good one. I have no idea how easy or difficult that is to do and happy to concede that most people do not seem to want to change - I was just expressing my own view having been on the site for a couple of months. Ironically I thought up a great name which I now forgetton - all I can remember is that I liked it

BTW - thanks Kestas for a great site
figlesquidge (2131 D)
12 Jan 10 UTC
It wouldn't be hard to do, but it would require more detail to be saved on the server (not much though).

Bug in World Diplomacy?
I don't know if the code used for the World Dip variant on this site is the same as the one used in GoonDip, but if it is - I had spotted what I thought was a bug on GoonDip, and informed Gilgatex about it, but an hour later GoonDip closed (for good). Could someone check for bugs here?

A Question for Kestas About Variants
How does country allocation in Variants work? In normal games, you have a greater chance of playing countries you haven't played much. So is this true in Variants as well?

And what would happen if, say, Fleet Rome were introduced as a variant? Would playing a country in Fleet Rome affect your chances in normal games?

Learning Java
Hi all.
After much to-ing and fro-ing I've decided to learn Java. My decision has been swayed by the fact university will give me credit for it, but its something I've been thinking about for quite some time anyway. I believe its quite simple (someone described it to be as equidistant from C, javaScript and VB), but I was wondering if any of you know of a good free resource to get going?
