Bug in World Diplomacy?
I don't know if the code used for the World Dip variant on this site is the same as the one used in GoonDip, but if it is - I had spotted what I thought was a bug on GoonDip, and informed Gilgatex about it, but an hour later GoonDip closed (for good). Could someone check for bugs here?

A Question for Kestas About Variants
How does country allocation in Variants work? In normal games, you have a greater chance of playing countries you haven't played much. So is this true in Variants as well?

And what would happen if, say, Fleet Rome were introduced as a variant? Would playing a country in Fleet Rome affect your chances in normal games?

Is there a website or program folks use to test our whether moves would be successful? I'm trying to evaluate different "what-if" scenarios and would like to input different alternatives. Any thoughts?

Learning Java
Hi all.
After much to-ing and fro-ing I've decided to learn Java. My decision has been swayed by the fact university will give me credit for it, but its something I've been thinking about for quite some time anyway. I believe its quite simple (someone described it to be as equidistant from C, javaScript and VB), but I was wondering if any of you know of a good free resource to get going?

I'm sorry to post a newbie question, but how does one resign. Is it via the votes buttons? Also, does this site have a forum message search feature?

You can't resign once the game has started without being thought of as a general horrible person.

Yes, we would encourage you to see the game through to the end. It is only right to see a game through to the end, as leaving would drastically change the dynamics of the game. Even if your position looks hopeless, you can still affect the outcome of the game.

SO YOU BETTER PLAY THE WHOLE GAME!!
:]
Agreed. The only time it's permissible to resign is when you're in a live game that's effectively over, it's 2am and you desperately have to take a crap. But I think a forum message search feature would be badass.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

To clarify, resigning is bad because it messes up the game for the other 6 players. It'll benefit some while hurting others.

Plus, if it is a case of being stabbed and being in a really bad position, quiting benefits the players who hurt you, so why help them by giving up? Fight, fight, fight to the death to stop those that hurt you.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
11 Jan 10 UTC
Always play to the end. If you don't then not only will you miss possible oppartunities, you may start to get a reputation as a quitter.

But, I still think there should be a "resign" type option, that automatically CDs. It's better than having a few turns of NMR and then having a country CD.

Let's be honest webdip isn't the be all and end all. While I hate leaving in the middle (and it usually only happens in live games) sometimes I may get called away or yes need to take a crap. This may happen in the middle of the game even when I'm winning. Unfortunately, there is just nothing u can do about it.

So, in situations where it is unavoidable (either because you have to do something else urgently or because you just don't feel like playing) it would be good to have the button. At least that way someone else could join and start playing.
Stukus (2126 D)
11 Jan 10 UTC
I agree that an automatic CD would be better if they're just going to quit anyway. It would alert the other players to the situation more quickly and allow a new player to come in immediately. Maybe there should be a Resign button, just call it something demeaning so people don't want to use it, like, "Giving-up like a little girl, boo-hoo, wa-wa-wa."
Golgo1 (459 D)
11 Jan 10 UTC
I like the idea of letting the game know that you are done. That way, if all the rest of the players are ready, they dont have to wait for the phase to time out.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
11 Jan 10 UTC
In the past when this has come up, it has been mentioned that other sites have that sort of option and it encourages people to give up such that many people join a bunch of games and then just resign from the ones where things don't go well. This leads to most games having multiple CDs and not being true to the game.

I believe that is the official reason there is no resign button. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Golgo1 (459 D)
11 Jan 10 UTC
I don't see what the difference between resign and not showing up (logging on). The only difference I see is that by not showing up, you make everybody else wait for you until you are automatically CD
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Jan 10 UTC
The other difference is that a resign happens that turn and gives the rest of the players an opportunity to pause until a new player can be found without severely causing issues to the flow of the game. To normally CD means two NMRs before you are in CD, meaning two turns where the game has been potentially altered.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

I would quite like to add a resign option also.
I think it should be added, and let you get paid the value of your SCs if someone takes them over.
Sendler (418 D)
11 Jan 10 UTC
Nah you shouldnt get repaid!
figlesquidge (2131 D)
11 Jan 10 UTC
Why not? I think repaying someone *IF* they leave the nation in such a state someone else feels its fair to take over is fair enough.
However I can see a major fairness issue here so don't worry, it'll never happen (far too easy to abuse, and very hard to police).
general (100 D)
12 Jan 10 UTC
Maybe there should be a bidding system? Like lets say you own 17 SCs and decide that you need to quit, you let others bid for your SCs so they can (presumably) win and get the rest of the points. Would add an interesting dimension
SEcki (1171 D)
12 Jan 10 UTC
Nah, just add a suitable resign button. I also agree that w/o that button people will just go CD by just not entering moves/logging off, which - after being exposed to that several times - makes for a really bad game experience.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
12 Jan 10 UTC
Having thought about it a bit this evening, I'm firmly behind having a resign button.
However, I think that a change that should be made first and must be made if one is added is that players below 100pt should not be automatically refinanced those lost to CD.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Jan 10 UTC
Absolutely agree, Figle. Also, have the reimbursement if someone takes it over, keeping the pot of the game the same. In other words, instead of their buy-in increasing the pot, it just goes to the person who resigned. And nobody should ever get an auto-reload to 100 if they have unreimbursed resignations/CDs. So if you have an unreimbursed 20 point resignation, then you can only be reloaded to 80 D.

One final thing - if a person goes CD (by NMRing), then they shouldn't get the buyin of the replacement. They destroyed the game and so that buyin should go to the pot.
Stukus (2126 D)
12 Jan 10 UTC
Really? I liked the growing pot. Besides, what if someone put in 20 and now they're worth 40? What happens to the extra 20 D if someone takes over? Or if they're worth 10? Do they only get the 10 back? Everyone else's points are locked in, I don't think that by resigning you should get them back because someone likes a challenge and playing the underdog.
general (100 D)
12 Jan 10 UTC
Isn't it just basic demand/supply? If someone wants to play your country because of a good/bad position then shouldn't you be allowed to let them play it?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
12 Jan 10 UTC
Stukus: in the proposal you would get paid the value they buy in at. So, if you left the nation in a wreck you would probably not get anything back, if there was a glimmer of hope then possibly and if you left it right in control with 17SCs then you'd get most of the points.
