Saudi Arabia
My wife has been invited to speak at King Faisal Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and they're also willing to fly me there as well. Looking beyond the knee-jerk reaction that visiting the Middle East is unsafe for westerners, is there anyone here that has been there recently; and if so, how comfortable were you visiting/traveling there? I'm personally pretty damn exciting about the chance, but I don't want to wear either rose or black covered glasses (so to speak).

Dog-gone Funny Tails
I love my aquarium fish- and I love dogs, too, and am happy to report I'm (the family is) getting two new Shih-Tzu puppies, two brothers, on Friday! Getting them to commemorate Sparky, our loveable porch-hound Golden Retriever that just died... but we had some great times. What're YOUR dogs and good dog stories?

To Start:

Sparky- In Memorium

Sparky was a good dog- but not a very active one, a Golden Retriever that never really learned to fetch (true.) He was big as a puppy, and used to follow our little Cocker Spaniel Charlie around, who was a third Sparky's size (even as a puppy!) Charlie was hyper and ALWAYS wanted to play- Sparky was happy to sit down with you or relax in the sun. He always liked the grass and the sun, and food, a lot of food... a LOT of food.

i had a cairn terrier and the best story i have about that dog is that he crapped and pissed all over the ground enough times when our new son showed up that i got rid of him. thats not to say that i hate dogs...i just hated THAT dog.

I've never owned a dog of my own, it was cats growing up. I might one day.

On the cats I lived with in grade school, all were rescues:

-Dudley-
Dudley was the oldest, and smartest. Easily the ringleader, he kept the other cats into trouble and let us humans know we couldn't control him. He would often attack me when I returned from school just to remind me of the fact. He never stopped being a kitten even after he should have

-Dandelion-
Often nicknamed Dandy, she was the princess. She quickly learned that purring could make humans give her anything she wanted and abused it. Dudley was the only one to keep her in line, though she hardly participated in his escapades.

-Patches or Lil' Kitty-
This one came from the dumpster of my mom's restaurant. She never stopped eating and when we couldn't control her diet, she would get overweight. The other two cats always teased her by taking something she had and then running off too fast for her to catch. Before deciding on Patches, we called her Little Kitty, and it stuck even after she went fatty.

Sadly, all the cats were lost when my mother died, and I expect they are all dead now.

One time my son Timmy had his foot stuck in a railroad track and my dog lassie barked at the train to save my sons leg. What a good dog.

CATS- UGH!

I DESPISE cats... give me fish, give me loyal dogs. Cats aren't pets- they think they own the place, and scratch, and jump everywhere, and... just not for me. I have a great friend who loves cats, and I tolerate hers just because they are hers (she has dogs too, those I like!)

@ag7433 I want to here the whole story, it sounds amazing...
I loved my cat. Had her since I was 6 or so, and I'm 18 now.

She was an inside cat for a long time, but my parents decided they didn't want to have her inside any more because she apparently sprayed, but I never saw her do it smelled it. She seemed to be okay with it though. She got to run around outside wherever she wanted, and this kept her in shape. She was catching birds right up until the end.

She loved me and I loved her. When I was riding the bus to school, she'd follow me down the street every morning and sit there with me, rubbing against me and just letting me pet her. After I'd go, she'd start the walk back. Any time she saw me across the yard, she'd get up and start walking towards me, meowing the whole time (I'd do it back, and I've been told I can do it pretty well because of this), and I'd pick her up and carry her back and sit with her on my lap while she kneaded my belly for a while before she laid down.

She trusted me a lot to. I carried her around on her back like a baby for almost her whole life, and it's supposed to be a big show of trust if a cat will allow itself to be turned upside down. Another show of that trust was when she had her kittens one time. She had like a dozen litters of 5/6, and usually it was either in or near my room. Once, she even crawled into bed and had them behind the bend in my knees while I was laying on my side. Sure, it sounds gross, but she apparently felt safe there, which is amazing to me.

She was still going strong, not looking old or anything, but she died in August of this year. Two dogs snuck up on her while she slept on the porch one night. They mutilated her. I won't go into the details, but just know that there was internal bleeding, organs exposed, and she was alive for about 15 minutes of pain. The owner lets the dogs off the chain at night to roam the neighboorhood. If I see them again, they're not gonna make it home that night.

In memory of Bandit and Mindy:

Bandit was the Shih-Tzu I bought for my wife when we got married and Mindy was a Beagle mix we rescued a couple of years later. The passed within a year of each other. Bandit was 16 when he died and a year later Mindy died at 15.

We couldn't go without a dog, so we started looking just two days after Mindy passed. After 15 years of having a dog in your bed, it gets real lonesome to not have your friend and companion there by your side, ready to go every morning and curling up behind your legs or against your back every night.

So, we went looking at the pound and animal shelters, but none of the dogs reached out and grabbed us. So, on a whim, we looked in a local petstore (we know the owners, they don't buy from puppy mills) and appened across the cutest little Long Haired Miniature Dachshund. We fell in love with him instantly and had to take him home.

He has been a great dog now for over 4 years and we coudln't ask for anything more out of him. So, now we are on the hunt for a sister for him, either another Dachshund or a Long Hair Chihuahua.

Is it true that you get high on cat spray? As in South Park.
Thanks, Obi.

Oh, and her name was Misty. She outlived all of her kittens I believe now that I think of it.

Not a fan of cats either...I inherited one though when I married my wife. Her name is Daisy. Cool cat, but she pukes at least once a week in random spots. Grrrrrr....

We also have a Golden Doodle (Golden Retriever and Mini Poodle mix). Awesome dog! His name is Coach. He is 3 years old. Looks exactly like a Golden Retriever but smaller...only 33 or so pounds. He's got stubby feet and somewhat of a long body. The retriever in him is obvious when you look at him, but he's got a good mix of retriever and poodle mentality. He can get ornary sometimes like a poodle.

One day when we were cage training him, I had left my leather coat on a chair that either had fallen or he was able to grab...he ate about a third of it. I was ready to beat his ass.

Another time this past Spring, I planted a garden. The next morning I let him outside and he came back in all muddy...that f'er dug it up! Let's just say he never did that again. :)
