Saudi Arabia
My wife has been invited to speak at King Faisal Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and they're also willing to fly me there as well. Looking beyond the knee-jerk reaction that visiting the Middle East is unsafe for westerners, is there anyone here that has been there recently; and if so, how comfortable were you visiting/traveling there? I'm personally pretty damn exciting about the chance, but I don't want to wear either rose or black covered glasses (so to speak).

Dog-gone Funny Tails
I love my aquarium fish- and I love dogs, too, and am happy to report I'm (the family is) getting two new Shih-Tzu puppies, two brothers, on Friday! Getting them to commemorate Sparky, our loveable porch-hound Golden Retriever that just died... but we had some great times. What're YOUR dogs and good dog stories?

Resignation
Does anyone know how to resign?

Do you get your points back?
denis (864 D)
07 Nov 09 UTC
No and people will hate you and your stats will be horrible
superchunk (4890 D)
07 Nov 09 UTC
No. There is no way to simply leave a game once it starts. You made a wager and a commitment to finish the game. Play until you die, survive, or win.

However, you also can never fall below a "total" of 100pts. So if all the pts you have invested in games and on hand is less than 100 when you finish a game, you will get enough points back to ensure your total is 100.

Ex. You're in 3 games with bets of (70, 20, 10) and you have zero points available. Thus you have a total of 100. If you lost the 10 pt game, you would normally get nothing, however, to keep you at a total of 100, you'll get the 10pts back.

You need to completely miss two full phases, which pisses people off in its own right. Then they are still pissed off at you even more because the game dynamics are completely changed.

A correction to supervhunks point statement. CD points never ever get returned. CD in a game or games with all of your points and you are done on the site.
ag7433 (927 D(S))

Resigning never works on this site. Draugnar has resigned before and is still here. I've asked kestas to fix it so it works.

Alderian (2425 D(S))

Draug, I thought CD points do get returned, but only when you finally complete a game either by being eliminated or by getting to the draw or win/loss.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Nov 09 UTC
I'd have to hear what Kestas says to be sure or look through the code and I don't have time for that.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)

If you CD and it takes you below 100 D, you do get them back, but only when the game itself comes to an end.
spyman (424 D(G))
08 Nov 09 UTC
Perhaps there should be a resign button. That would allow new players to take over straight away. It's an idea but I suppose there could negative repercussions.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
08 Nov 09 UTC
The fear is that a resign button would encourage people to resign who might otherwise stick with it, not sure how to test whether it'd be better or not without risking a bunch of avoidable CDs :-(
jarrah (185 D)

My 2c worth - there should not be a resign button. Even for a trial.
spyman (424 D(G))
08 Nov 09 UTC
You might be right there Kestas. Some people probably would change their mind.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
08 Nov 09 UTC
Resigning isn't a part of the game, and never should be.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Nov 09 UTC
Actually, resigning in the boardgame was as simple as walking away. And the players, being face to face, can always find a replacement without the position having to miss two phases.

So, that would be the equivalent of the resign button. But what should be done, if a resign button were implemented, is make certain the player can't take back over the position without buying in again.
JECE (1248 D)
08 Nov 09 UTC
Since it impossible to tell if a player has really abandoned the game on-line, the two turns are an arbitrary cut-off which decide when a player has left the table. Actually, I think a button "tempraorily leaving" or the like could be included. This way, if a player knows he is going to miss a turn and is unable to pause the game nor able (or wanting) to find a sub, he can reserve his place in the game for when he returns. The button would have the effect of disallowing take-overs for that player and make the game run to its time limit every phase which that player would have been able to issue orders in. Because with this button there would be no more need to give players who just missed one phase breathing room, it might be a good idea to allow take-overs after only one NMR.

And I stress again that countries enter civil disorder after just missing one phase!
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
08 Nov 09 UTC
How about this?

If a person misses one turn they go into CD and their place can be bought for whatever it is worth. But, so long as the player only misses one turn, they can rejoin for free. If they miss more than one turn, they can buy back in like anyone else.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Nov 09 UTC
Semantics, JECE. It's just a word.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
08 Nov 09 UTC
Previously when a resign button was discussed, it was mentioned that another online dip website had such a thing and that people just joined a bunch of games and then resigned the ones they didn't do well in, leaving most games unbalanced. Definitely wouldn't want that.

As for in face to face a person walking away from the table, if you just have 7 friends getting together and one leaves that "friend" is screwing the others. That is similar to this because there isn't necessarily someone willing to step in, especially for a losing position.

I see a couple ways to improve things. First, add a game by game ability to "sit". That could help a lot when someone has to quickly go out of town and isn't able to get all their games paused or find a sitter for all their games. Often the people willing to sit are in one or more games with the person. The game would still be tied to the original player so they still get the points and record, but the sitting player keeps things going.

Second, allow resigned positions with less centers than the starting number (3 or less for Russia and 2 or less for others) to be joined for free and to not count against your stats. Then people would be willing to take over a losing position just to help keep a game balanced.
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Nov 09 UTC
I would say all takeovers should come without ranking results, including Ghost ratings. You can take over an 8 SC position, but if it is about to be the fall turn and you can't hold them because someone else is sitting on them already, it doesn't matter how good your negotiation skills are...
JECE (1248 D)
10 Nov 09 UTC
abgemacht: The problem with having to buy back in is that we would like to encourage people to continue playing the game.

Alderian: I really like your second suggestion! In fact, I also think it would be good to integrate the whole 'sitting' thing into the site's interface. But what do you mean by "Often the people willing to sit are in one or more games with the person." Do you mean sitting for someone else in the same game? Surly that's not a good idea, as it is prone to abuse.

Draugnar: I was only making sure people knew what I meant by civil disorder because I was going to mention the term in my suggestion. I think I decided against including the term because people aren't familiar with the correct semantics.

But read my suggestion:
I think a button "temporarily leaving" or the like could be included.
If you can't understand what i mean, please ask me to explain.
JECE (1248 D)
10 Nov 09 UTC
Draugnar: I fully agree with your last comment. Honestly, Alderian's second suggestion was somewhat arbritrary in its cut-off. But the jist is the same, and I have been arguing for a division of statistics for months. (Here is my very first post on the forum: threadID=458170) Apparently, it's too hard to do.
JECE (1248 D)
10 Nov 09 UTC
Actually, that's the first post I've made on any forum!
Alderian (2425 D(S))
10 Nov 09 UTC
JECE, what I meant is, I often see people post asking for a sitter and then other people post saying they would but they are in one of the same games so can't. If you could delegate your games to specific people, then the first person could have given some of their games to that second person, but obviously not the one they are both in. It shouldn't allow you to delegate a game to another user that is in the same game. So no conflict of interest.

Anonymous games would be a problem though because you could try delegating an anonymous game to someone and if it failed then you would know they are in that game too. So maybe no delegating anonymous games, just need to get them paused.

Resignations are TERRIBLE things, and should only occur as horrific accidents, or maybe if some guy has you surrounded and has 14 units to your one, you may be forgiven, in part.

Don't do it.
JECE (1248 D)
10 Nov 09 UTC
Alderian: I wouldn't have thought of that issue with anonymous games.

obiwanobiwan: 14 to 1? who are you kidding. That's a walk in the park -- after dark. ;-) No, nobody here is advocating giving up and CD'ing. We are are trying to figure out a way for people to leave in a hurry, but who are still interested in continuing their games to not lose their nations.

Let me bullet my proposal below for a button in active games that would:
*disallow the takeover of the player's country
*have phase-lengths run their full length every time the player would have been able to issue orders
For a more detailed explanation, see above.
Centurian (3257 D)
10 Nov 09 UTC
That is a terrible idea and will never be implemented.
JECE (1248 D)
14 Nov 09 UTC
That is rather rude for someone who doesn't even care to explain himself. Why is the idea 'terrible'?
JECE (1248 D)
15 Nov 09 UTC
Seriously, what is your concern? Abuse? It doesn't help the player if it misses its turns. The only reason (or way) somebody could abuse the button is to purposely piss people off. If that was their aim they would say so in the Global tab. Then it would be just like pauses when a player explicitly says he won't unpause just for the hell of it and the mods would do their work.
zckls04 (100 D)
15 Nov 09 UTC
Maybe you should have a separate score attached to each player which corresponds to their "reliability". Sort of like an ebay feedback score. Every time you resign or go into CD, you lose points, and every time you play a game to completion you get points. Then for serious games you can set the minumum feedback score for joiners. Of course you'd have to ensure there were enough games open with no minumum (for those without a track record to gain one).

Just a thought.
JECE (1248 D)
16 Nov 09 UTC
Well, your profile records every time you resign or have left. And you lose pints if you resign, leave or get taken over.
Draugnar (0 DX)
16 Nov 09 UTC
I didn't know I gave any pints, JECE... Just kidding man, but it seemed kind of funny in a late night, Curacao foggy way.
JECE (1248 D)
16 Nov 09 UTC
Oh, ha ha. It took me way too long to understand you. I thought you were using a idiom!
zckls04 (100 D)
16 Nov 09 UTC
@JECE
Points right now give the same value to a game which was played and lost, as to one which was abandoned, so it's not really the same system. And whilst your profile records your resignations it doesn't allow you to restrict games to those with a good record. Again, not the same thing at all.
JECE (1248 D)
16 Nov 09 UTC
Yes, and it is also true that take-overs erase all record of abandonment apart from with lost points, which are rather abstract.
JECE (1248 D)
16 Nov 09 UTC
And what do you mean by: "And whilst your profile records your resignations it doesn't allow you to restrict games to those with a good record."
JECE (1248 D)
16 Nov 09 UTC
?
JECE (1248 D)
18 Nov 09 UTC
But the real issue is that those that just disappear are almost exclusively new players. As for people leaving games because they are losing, well, they're hated anyway.
