You guys are great
I love this place. This site. I hate to gush but I just want to say this has to be the best community on the Internet. So many of you are smart, I consistently feel outclassed in every way and look up to a lot of you. You always make me think, and are always respectful. And to the trolls and haters out there, I love you too. I love playing diplomacy and writing on the forum... it enriched me so much. So... just thanks!

Question about points in WTA game.
In a WTA game two players went CD and the other three agreed to a draw. I want to know if the two players on CD will be in the draw and get the points as they already have some SCs?

I left for several days. I talked with the mods and we came to some understanding. I took a few days to cool off and now I'm back. I will endeavour not to lose my cool and will step away if I feel the rage building up inside ready to burst out with vile insinuations and insults. Not to say I won't insult or offend, but I'll try to make certain they are for fun and at least throw up a smiley when I call someone a dumbass and threaten to shove a rocket up their ass. :-)

@ stratagos... yeah, so the site was updated. kinda cool.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
15 Sep 09 UTC
@ stratagos, as Babak mentioned there was another new update that added anonymous games, public press games, and no press games. Also phase lengths as short as 5 minutes and as long as 10 days. And a different amount of time to sign up than the phase length.

Also, several of us have been playing over at http://dip.xbsd.kr/index.php for the variant maps that will hopefully make it back here eventually. And when that happens, the people playing there now will have a leg up on those new maps.

DJ and I have it out all the time. He thinks I'm a compulsive liar (and may be right, but only time will tell). The difference is, despite my maniacal (sorry Maniac) tendencies on the lunatic fringe of sanity, I respect him and his opinion. I may disagree and call him names, but in the end, I consider him someone I could be friends with in real life. To that end, you do not qualify... Hell, I don't even know if you qualify as human. Your ideas about right and wrong with regards to the subject being discussed are most definitely inhumane.

i've always had a good impression of Persephone... what makes you make such a wild claim Draugnar? point me to the thread.

Here is the quote...

A fetus becomes a human when it's umbilical cord is cut from its mother's body. Plain and simple. Until that point, it is attached to her, it is her body, and she chooses what to do with it.

She believes that, whenever the doctor arbitrarily snips the cord, determines when a baby is a human life.

The forum is heating up again these days... there was like a month or more of downtime, but honestly stratagos I'm not sure how long you were gone. Glad to have you back though!
Persephone (100 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
Obviously that quote is taken out of context. There is a humaine and an inhumaine way to do things (not to mention legal). I was trying to make a point that what a woman does with HER body is HER business, not the sperm donor, and certainly not religious fanatics. There is obviously a point where it becomes inhumaine to inflict pain on a fetus, and as mentioned, it is when that fetus develops the ability to feel pain. I am certainly not suggesting it is ok to abort a fetus at full-term, you dingbats.
Just because my opinion doesn't coincide with yours doen't make it illegitamate, or me a monster. I'm actually a very nice person. You 2 on the other hand seem like woman-controlling freaks with a god complex, probably people I wouldn't associate with anyhow, so no worries on us ever becoming 'friends'.
LOL. Nice.

Persephone, please go back and read my comments in that thread and tell me if I seem like a 'woman controlling freak with a god complex'.
(And for what its worth, despite what Draugnar said about me, I can't stand him and was happy for a few days when he left the forum, and hoped it was permanent this time. I certainly have no desire to kiss his ass.)
Thucydides (864 D(B))
16 Sep 09 UTC
cant wait to jump into the abortion thread. i'll do it right after class in an hour. see you there!!!!
And since Persephone wants to personally bash me in this thread, I'd like to post another quote from her on that thread.

"Paternal rights? You gave those up when you decided to impregnate a woman who would need to resort to abortion because SHE IS EITHER MENTALLY, PHYSICALLY OR EMOTIONALLY UNABLE TO HAVE A CHILD. Simple as that." (emphasis added)

So she fully supports a woman's right to abort a fetus at any time, but any woman who aborts a baby is weak.

Frankly, if you read that thread, I am pro-choice, but hate hypocrisy on both sides of the argument, which if you actually read the thread, I am more than happy to point out.

i was avoiding the abortion thread because I already did too much political pontificating on the other threads this week... but it seems like I cant be kept away.

i cant blame persephone though... sometimes, when arguing with the dingbat crazy lunatic fringe, its impossible to keep one's cool. I dont mean to suggest Draugnar isa dingbat crazy lunatic fringe kinda guy... not at all... but just sayin' ;)

i'll see you guys there on that thread at some point ;)

Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Sep 09 UTC
LOL. No, I'm definitely a lunatic fringe kinda guy. I noticed that Persy-girl has changed her view to not desire cruel and unusual punishment on the fetus so abortion shouldn't be practiced after it feels pain. Well that is generally considered to be somewhere around 25 weeks of age. Long before they come through the birth canal or are removed surgically.

So what is it P-girl? Is it when the umbilical is cut? Or is ti when the fetus can feel pain? You really need to chose because these are mutually exclusive options.

"cruel and unusual punishment on the fetus"

Are abortions typically inflicted on the fetus as punishment? Seems sort of unlikely that a fetus would be able to form the mens rea to commit a crime - much less a capital crime.

Babak, I'm good with an anon game ;)
Jamiet99uk (873 D)

There is already a stand-alone thread for the abortion debate. Can we try to stop it filling up all the other threads too?
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Sep 09 UTC
Acosmist - punishment isn't always for actual crimes. Has the child who refused to do something committed a crime? But yet they still get punished.

No, the punishment is for having the audacity to develop into a life without the mother's permission. But if you want to go there. Then you are torturing and abusing the child with a painful death.

@JECE - enough with the reference back to old news threads. The horse is dead and decaying already, you dipstick schlong. :-)
Acosmist (0 DX)
17 Sep 09 UTC
The "cruel and unusual punishment" clause is a specific thing. The words refer to something.

It's this kind of linguistic carelessness that gets people complaining about "free speech" when someone refuses to listen to them :/
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Sep 09 UTC
In legal terms, yes, but it is also a phrase made up of four words that can have another meaning. "Ex post facto" is also a legal phrase but anything done after the fact can be said to have been done "ex post facto." The law doesn't own these phrases.

Of course, I've often wondered why the punishment has to be unusual AND cruel to have a legal bearing. I would think cruel punishment alone would be sufficient. The firing squad was not unusual in the military back in the day, but most would argue that having your body riddled with bullets is extremely painful and a slow way to do compared to a direct shot right between the eyes. Yes, I know not all the rifles on a firing squad had live rounds, but enough of them did.

It seems like a better course would be to accept objective definitions instead of letting everyone's subjective definition carry discourse - in fact, I think what I am hoping for is communication rather than nonsense.

Probably hopeless.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Sep 09 UTC
So we don't call it cruel and unusual punishment as it isn't really punishment and, at the moment, it isn't exactly unusual. would you not admit that cutting up a living organism that can feel pain or using a vacuum to tear it apart and suck it out is cruel? Is not knowingly inflicting pain cruel, plain and simple?
JECE (1253 D)

Draugnar: As I said brfore, don't be so selfish. The thread isn't only about you. Besides, I was merely complying with Babak's order.

Jamiet99uk: Ha ha, I was going to say that. Guys, there is another thread.

Acosmist: hopelessly hopeless :-)

Completely impossible now, of course, where you win by SCs (as in the rules) but in the version of phpDip extant then, where you won by units, entirely doable though, I believe, never matched.

Question about countries in Civil Disorder.
Just a quick question about what happend when a country goes into Civil Disorder. One of the players in our game had login problems and his country went into CD.What happens when we attack his units?. If they are forced to retreat what happens then? Do they retreat to a random location or to their supply centre of origin, or are they destroyed? We have our game set for a turn every 48 hours so I dont want to delay the game by 2 days by attacking someone one of his units.
