Move question
Ok so, Army A is moving from Area A to Area B. Army C who is in Area C supports the hold on Area A. What is the status of this support, given that Army A is moving?

Ghost-Ratings
I have rather hit a buffer with calculating the Ghost-Ratings, namely that the database claims that the first game on this site finished at Sat, 29 Aug 2009 12:09:55 GMT. This seems perhaps a little out.

Feature Request: Email alerts
This is an excellent web site. One feature I would like to see: email alerts. That way when an ally sends a message you would see it right in your email, and you can be notified when all orders are complete. I think it will speed up the games, and it will help prevent order mess-ups when you have to coordinate with others.

Draw, Pause, Cancel? What the...?!
The voting board beneath the in-game map? How does that work? Draw seems clear enough, but cancel and pause...they give me pause. And if I click Draw, then what happens? Nothing unless more people click it? I don't want to touch it without knowing the answers to these questions.

Confused about a failed attack
Playing as Italy in game 36309 "Fun with Guns" attacking Trieste from Vienna with uncut support from Albania. Austria has a move to Trieste from Budapest and he is attacking Albania from Trieste. It' s been a while since I played this but I thought I would win such a scenario? Can anyone help me understand what happened and why my supported attack did not succeed?

hahaha, do any of you guys remember when we had the "100+ things that show you play Dip way to much" or something like that?

and yes, I infact failed a geography test thanks to the fact that on a world map the Black Sea is MUCH MUCH smaller than it is on the Dip map. =/ I do call Romania RUmania though, in real life, which is kinda sad. And that I don't really acknowledge Spain as a country........

what's "crete" and "cyprus"?

Prussia was originally a small province, but they expanded their territories during the 1800's until they had become a fairly prominent nation. At one point they fought a massive war against Russia, France, and Austria; at the same time. I think that was Frederick The Great, or, The III (not sure though).
jman777 (407 D)

After WWII though the original state of prussia was given to Poland. I may be wrong, it could've been WWI.

Berlin is in the region of Bradenburg, not Prussia. However, the regions of Bradenburg and Prussia made up the country called the Kingdom of Prussia.
Invictus (240 D)
29 Aug 09 UTC
"Prussia" was always really Brandenburg. The Margraves of Brandendburg got Prussia from Poland and the Teutonic Knights and since it was outside the Holy Roman Empire they were able to call themselves kings afterwords. The kings of Prussia always lived in Berlin.

Crete and Cyprus are islands in the mediterranean.
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
29 Aug 09 UTC
If you look at the Diplomacy map, Crete is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea(largest one) and Cyprus is a Greek/Turk island below Smyrna in the Eastern Mediteranean Sea.

I was kidding. I do know what and where (to an extent) they are. I used to read a massive amount of greek mythology, and that whole area was referenced quite often, understandably.
Acosmist (0 DX)

Prussia was the same size as Prussia + Brandenburg! How odd! And false.

The "Kingdom of Prussia" is just as much Prussia as the Duchy of Prussia. "Prussia" is a valid shorthand for either one. It's not as if there was a Platonic Form of Prussia which Berlin was not in - it was in a region that was called Prussia, and that's all that matters. The statement "Prussia was given to Poland" is not correct, as parts of what was Prussia were given to several different countries.
shadoom (216 D)

Prussia did not fight Austria Russia and France at once, they fought Denmark in an alliance with Austria, then had a war with Austria over who got the territory they had captured. Then around 3-6 years later they got the rest of the German states to join in smashing France, after which Germany unified and France went to make friends with Russia (which was the reason France and Russia were allied in WW1). When Prussia did this it was under the leadership of Bismark, who later became the chancellor of Germany.
StevenC. (1047 D(B))

jman777,

Prussia was not only given to Poland but in small portions to Lithuania and Russia(Kaliningrad) after WWII. After the Great War, a small portion of Prussia was given to Poland so it could gain access to the sea(with the exception of the free city of Danzig).
StevenC. (1047 D(B))

Acosmist,

I've seen maps which show the area of Prussia as "Brandenburg-Prussia" but I can't remember from which years those maps were referring to. Maybe the two were one at some point but I'm not sure.
Acosmist (0 DX)

shadoom - yep! I have a big amateur interest in Prussian history, so I know all about it. Quite a tale! It went wrong sometime between the Franco-Prussian War and WWI, when the German Empire developed a taste for colonialism (when colonies were on the wane) and expansionism (which didn't really motivate the previous wars, wars that were predicated on uniting the German people rather than conquering Europe).

StevenC - and wasn't it a shame what the Allies did to Kaliningrad? I mean, Kant's crib, and all that. It must have been a lovely place, and an intellectual center to boot. Besides being a Prussia buff, I'm a Kant buff, though I actually have real credentials in that - a degree and all, besides some papers to my name.

There are so many inaccuracies earlier in this thread, that I won't even bother to correct them. Here is a map of Europe for exactly 1900. http://www.euratlas.com/history_europe/europe_map_1900.html
Invictus (240 D)
30 Aug 09 UTC
What does that map prove, then?
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
30 Aug 09 UTC
Yeah. I'm confused as to what your point is with the map. I wasn't even referring to that year.
jman777 (407 D)
30 Aug 09 UTC
yeah we've been talking about the mid 19th century, not the 20th.
Invictus (240 D)
30 Aug 09 UTC
That's the irritating thing about the game, that the map is for 1914 while the game starts in 1901. It's obviously a better arrangement of countries or something, but it bothers me how the Balkan Wars are ignored, plus how Sweden and Norway are separate even though they were still loosely united under the Swedish king till 1905, France not starting off owning North Africa, and probably some other stuff I just haven't noticed.
Parallelopiped (691 D)

Even if northafrica was blue, what good would it do?

Maybe Im too late, but Berlin is in Germany. Captal right?
Invictus (240 D)
30 Aug 09 UTC
It wouldn't change anything, but France owned Algeria since the 1830s or something so it definitely shouldn't be neutral. If it were called Morocco I could understand since Morocco was still technically independent in 1900. It isn't THAT big of a deal but Algeria was totally integrated into France so making it blue would be more accurate and wouldn't even change the game since France wouldn't get a unit there.

That'll be my variant: Blue North Africa.

Berlin is in Germany and is the capital. It's the capital because Prussia united Germany, if Saxe-Hildburghausen had united Germany the capital would have been whatever its capital was.
Toby Bartels (361 D)
30 Aug 09 UTC
Hey, do you guys know about the variant 1900? It addresses this issue (among other things).

Toby Bartels (361 D)

(I mean that it addresses the later comments, since JECE's first comment.)

Attack question
Unit A attempts to move to Area Z, supported by two other units. Unit B also tries to move into Area Z without support from two other units. Unit C attacks Unit A with no support.

I think that the attack on Area Z will be a stand-off, and since Unit A cannot move to Area Z, Unit C's attack on A will also be a stand-off. Is this correct?
