Doubt on rules
A fleet in Gulf of Bothnia can support another fleet from Norway to Peters.
I am sure it can if in Norway it's a tank, but I think if it's 2 fleets it's not possible.
Can someone confirm or dismiss this?

I think it would be funny to create a mini-tourney where metagaming is not only allowed, but encouraged and endorsed. Have some friends? Tell them so sign up! Pissed cause some guy stabbed you last game? Give him hell!

The inserting orders problem
After an update optimizing order caching and getting 0.9 ready for public release there was a bug in the footer code. When any bug gets detected all changes are rolled back in case the bug caused any data corruption, which in this case rolled back valid changes to orders, which meant orders didn't save any submitted changes.

The bug has now been fixed, and next phase times have been extended to ensure no-one misses their orders because of it. Thanks for reporting the problem

The Roma- HOW?
HOW is the mistreatment of these people still going on? HOW do these folks keep going with all of this? HOW is there no great Roma State? HOW is there so little help and so little outrage?

obiwanobiwan (248 D)
29 Aug 09 UTC
Really- I'm Jewish, and I always though the Jews and the Native Americans and African slaves and all had it bad... other groups too... Never knew about this until recently...

The Roma have been through so much of the same persecution... often right alongside the Jews, even- I knew the Inquisition and Holocaust, but it's they both got knocked around together (an understatement for the centuries) so much...

But at LEAST the Jews are out in the open (at least a good portion, myself one of them) and have an intact culture and strong homes in the US and still in Europe (I know a lot of UK player on php, out of curiosity- how many Jews in the UK are there, about? Know any?) and at LEAST many of them are successful... we even have a home state again, Israel.

I'm a liberal Democrat, and I don't always agree with Israel's actions- but at LEAST I feel comfortable knowing it's there- and I'm a US Jew.

The Roma have no state like that, and they're STILL being persecuted abhorently in Italy and the Balkans, at least.

Honestly... HOW? Granted I'm not the most grizzled person here, but I'm a fairly knowledgeable historian of sorts... especially with Europe/America. Really, looking back at all those books, there's not a whole lot in them about the Roma... their mentioned mainly in the mass killings (interestingly enough, the majority of my Euro-history books list them most prominently in the Inquisition and Holocaust... right there with the Jews.)

So yes- I was maybe 5 or so when Kosovo and all that errupted, but I still remember some of it... a bit... yeah, so does everyone 25 and over know about this and have decided to turn a blind eye, or is everyone just blind period?

This is insanity.

Your right but this is probably due to the lack of exposure to the public
even look at thee wiki page there are only two sentences
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
29 Aug 09 UTC
What? Two sentences? I've never even heard of the Roma and my strong point is history.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
29 Aug 09 UTC
Well, they're called Gypsies... they ARE the Gypsies, but the proper name I guess is Roma, I think Gypsy's a stereotype, like the "long-nosed, greedy Jew."

But that's just it- all that opression, and they get two sentences and no current exposure? We're spending so much tiem talking about the Palestinians, and they have it BAD, make no mistake... but at LEAST there are other Muslim states, and their suffering's only just begun in comparison to the centuries the Roma/Gypsies have had to suffer through it all.
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
29 Aug 09 UTC
Oh. Yes, the Gypsies have have it really rough. But in Italy?! Why in the fuck does the EU just sit around? Taking in consideration that Italy is a second world country it should be intolerable.
Hamilton (137 D)

Hamilton (137 D)

no, its true. gypsies steal.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
29 Aug 09 UTC
Granted I'm not an expert on these people- I've only just really begun to learn about them-

But I find it hard to believe, Hamilton, that a WHOLE RACE...? A whole race of thieves? That sounds like a sterotype akin to the Greedy, Ruinous Jew or the Savage Native American...

If you are going to make such a claim as to call an entire race thieves, you must have some pretty strong proof- and I mean it better be STRONG.

Because I cannot fathom a race of people simply born to steal- and those that do... I understand many Roma/Gypsies live in such squalor it's unfathomable to many of us in the US and Western Europe... perhaps they are left with no other way to live...

But still- what proof do you have of a race of thieves?
race?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
29 Aug 09 UTC
Yeah- according to wikipedia... the Romani? The Romani people are the Gypsies... or rather the Gypsies are stereotypical charicatures of the Romani...
denis (864 D)
29 Aug 09 UTC
It is true that so called "Gypsie Crime" is a problem in the balkans and Italy but both sides are right cause not all Romani, Roma, or Gypsies are not a race of theives although they do tend to be poor

It's an age old minority problem that is played out in many countries. The minority is different, different language, culture and rituals, people from the majority distrust them, they are not accepted into mainstream society, the minority thus find it difficult to gain employment, apply for government assistance etc. So if a society rejects you and your group what do you do? of course you reject society and its rules, especially its criminal law. People(the police, the state, mainstream society) treat you like shit .....you learn to treat them (and their laws, possessions etc) like shit. this furthers your bad reputation and thus we have a downward spiral that in the case of the Roma has been going on for an awful long time in Europe.

chicken or the egg
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
29 Aug 09 UTC
But my point is it's a breakable cycle- the Jew has... well, still probably not EVERYONE's favorite, but I'd like to think the Jew is generally accepted (at least e is in the States, and I'd like to think in a good deal of Europe...?) and has really been woven into the culture in many countries, and still retains a singular identity, and a prosperous one at that.

What I want to know is how it STARTED with the Roma... for the Jews it was Egypt and Babylon and Rome, but those were just conquerors- the big Anti-Semitism really traces back to the whole Christ thing, rise of Christianity and the Church, Jew becomes the hated scapegoat and "killed Jesus" and all that...

Native Americans were on the land the White Man wanted and had vast cultural differences- that simple.

African Slaves- different color from whites, and were beaten in war and salvery from there...

But where's that incident with the Roma? Where's that moment where the bigotry and hatred START? Granted I don't belive the analytic idea that human beings are purely rational, they can be irrational for sure... but there's still always a CAUSE for a reaction, especially one so large and long lasting as all those genocides/slaveries and the Roma issue... where's that moment where the Roma becomes the hated enemy of the "norm?"

All I can tell is they immigratedaround the 11th Century or so... and right form the start got the tar kicked out of them. SOMETHING happened, people weren't waiting with pitchforks when the first Roma crossed into Europe...

The Gypsies tried to rob my borderline dementia grandmother blind. I have very little sympathy for them.

invicus, a person/persons from the gypsy minority tried to rob your grandmother blind...not the gypsy race as a whole, last year an anglo saxon tried to steal my friends car....but im hardly likely to blame all anglo saxons am i, so why do you?
Zman (207 D)

Sean, thats an excellent point. Actions by an individual who is a member of minority get imputed on the minority as a whole. It is a criminally stupid way of thinking, but all too common.

Obi, Jews are generally accepted, especially in the States. But the recent actions of your Jewish state is causing all the old hatreds to be re-kindled. And I am tempted to say that, given the massive support that that "state" gets from Jews in the States, such hatred is wholly justified.

Israel policies, and the support it receives from the Jewish lobby, show Jews to be manipulative, reactionary, machiavellian and willing to play up their own past persecution while dishing out the exact same treatment to helpless arabs. I dont necessarily agree with this view, and I know some Jews who strongly oppose Israel's policies, even Israelis who do, but I can understand, and even sympathize, with those who take a negative view of Jews as a whole based on Israel's deplorable actions. If non-Israeli Jews strongly and vocallyopposed Israel's policies, the heartless current leadership of Israel would find it harder to carry out its agenda.

I am so proud of Obama for standing up to Israel and the Jewish lobby. Ive never been prouder of my President.

Roma (or sinti or gypsies, or nice word Gitanes in French) are ethnically like the majority of the population of India/Pakistan. They migrated from the upper Indus valley area some thousands of years ago.
Their skin colour set them apart from the people they settled amongst.

Those of you on this forum, who are so quick to judge how outrageous the treatment of roma is, probably never have met any nor lived a few 100 meters from their shacks or wagons. So don't judge about what you know nothing about!

They have a terribly bad press, I agree. But I defy anyone here to prove to me that that is wholly, or even partly, unjustified.

"They migrated from the upper Indus valley area some thousands of years ago."

According to Wikipedia their emigration from India was more recent than that - more like the11th century, arriving in Europe during the 14th century.
Zman (207 D)

Pantalone,

Do you think they enjoy living in such squalor, or resorting to stealing to get by? Perhaps what they are now is a result of centuries of mistreatment and bigotry directed towards them because of their dark skin color.

I think is excellent that we can now read all messages from the games we have played. One thing though the messages appear in reverse, with the most recent message appearing at the top, and the first message at the bottom. I think it would be better if this was switched around.

but my understanding was that a player that shows up as left doesn't affect the voting?
