Really- I'm Jewish, and I always though the Jews and the Native Americans and African slaves and all had it bad... other groups too... Never knew about this until recently...
The Roma have been through so much of the same persecution... often right alongside the Jews, even- I knew the Inquisition and Holocaust, but it's they both got knocked around together (an understatement for the centuries) so much...
But at LEAST the Jews are out in the open (at least a good portion, myself one of them) and have an intact culture and strong homes in the US and still in Europe (I know a lot of UK player on php, out of curiosity- how many Jews in the UK are there, about? Know any?) and at LEAST many of them are successful... we even have a home state again, Israel.
I'm a liberal Democrat, and I don't always agree with Israel's actions- but at LEAST I feel comfortable knowing it's there- and I'm a US Jew.
The Roma have no state like that, and they're STILL being persecuted abhorently in Italy and the Balkans, at least.
Honestly... HOW? Granted I'm not the most grizzled person here, but I'm a fairly knowledgeable historian of sorts... especially with Europe/America. Really, looking back at all those books, there's not a whole lot in them about the Roma... their mentioned mainly in the mass killings (interestingly enough, the majority of my Euro-history books list them most prominently in the Inquisition and Holocaust... right there with the Jews.)
So yes- I was maybe 5 or so when Kosovo and all that errupted, but I still remember some of it... a bit... yeah, so does everyone 25 and over know about this and have decided to turn a blind eye, or is everyone just blind period?
This is insanity.
