Interesting Discussion.
It struck me we haven't had any interesting ethical/political/historical/other debates for a while, and they're always good. Unfortunately I can't think of a topic...

Unpause please (Mod)
We have currently all voted for the draw. But because we are in pause (and Turkey is away) the draw can not be acted upon. Please unpause so they game can be finished.

I've taken over Trims account for the week, he's back on Sunday and i don't actual know what's happening in the leagues i.e. how well people are doin, whether i need to make sure a certain outcome to ensure trim stays up. Can anyone help fill me in a little. Thanks

Each game is supposed to be played individually
Biddis (364 D)
08 Jul 09 UTC
oh ok, so theres no running league or list or something (i have to admit i have no idea how leagues work)
figlesquidge (2131 D)
08 Jul 09 UTC
Well, I'm not in them, but I know Ghost has said on a number of occasions he wants each game to be played independently, without taking into account other results.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
08 Jul 09 UTC
Ah, not quite true. I'm not asking you to not look at the positions in the leagues, but cross-gaming isn't allowed.

Thank you, i wasn't planning on cross-gaming just wanted to know whether draw, win or survive was important in the game.

Its WTA with SC count as the tie break
jbalcorn (429 D)
08 Jul 09 UTC
My understanding is that it's allowed to decide not to ally with someone because he's ahead of you in the league, or to stab to increase your league position, but it's NOT allowed to say "I'll support your move here only if you support this move in the other game."
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
08 Jul 09 UTC
^ Correct
Alderian (2425 D(S))
08 Jul 09 UTC
As was pointed out to me, you may even want to support someone that is in the lead in the league. Better they get extra points than someone other than you comes in second if you are at a league level where 2 or more move up which is true of all but the B leagues I believe.
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Jul 09 UTC
Draws divide the points (12 per game) towards the league win by the number of players in the draw, so getting in a draw is better than a survive as the draw will get you points. But in the case of ties, total SCs then come into play.

Ghostie -

in the C level league games... its only top player moves up and 7th place relegated right?
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Look in this thread.

http://phpdiplomacy.net/index.php?viewthread=450486#450486

Ghost says:
"premiere demotes three to league A
league A promotes three to premiere, demotes 3 to B1 and B2
B1 and B2 each send the top player to A, as well as the better of the two runner up players; 3 each are demoted from B1 and B2 to C level
C1, 2, and 3 each promote the top two players; 3 players are demoted from each one to D level
D1, 2, 3, and 4 promote top two players from each, plus the top 3-ranked player; presumably no one is demoted from D, unless they are booted from the tournament for CD or something."

But notes that dropouts will affect that some as well. But more than just the single top and bottom player will move.

probably... though we've had so many CDs and NMR's in my league that I'm a bit annoyed to be honest... dunno if I want to keep playing if that's the standard...
djbent (2572 D(S))
10 Jul 09 UTC
yeah i feel you, but i think it will get better from here. the C and D levels were people who had not previously played in the leagues, whereas premiere, A and B levels were all people who played in the first go round. i understand from TGM that there have been almost no CD/NMR issues in those levels.

the problem in our league (i think, but maybe this isn't it) that has led to many NMRs is two fold. one aspect is that folks are not used to the quick phases (25h) - so even though it was advertised as such, some of them will likely drop out after this season b/c of that - the reality of it hit them when they were actually playing. the other issue was really different internet use patterns, so some people were only getting on once or twice during the phase, and then i'm waiting for their response to my messages, so i don't put orders in, and then.... NMR. which i guess is basically linked to the first issue.

anyway it certainly is interesting and i'm looking forward to the next round b/c i think a lot of this will get better.

10 Jul 09 UTC
@Fig, you keep syaing that, but it isn't true. There is to be know cross-game or outside influence metagaming, but we are allowed to keep in mind the other players' positions and act accordingly.
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Jul 09 UTC
Ignore that last one folks... Too much caffiene and stressing over League D1 this morning.
Xapi (194 D)

@ djbent:

Premier, A league and both B's have the same players that started them in them.

A player in A dropped out hours before the first game started, but he was replaced from the start.
Draugnar (0 DX)

@DJB, I put in a set of "if I don't hear jack" orders and then tweak them as the negotiations go along. That way I don't wind up with a bunch of holds.
djbent (2572 D(S))
10 Jul 09 UTC
that's a good practice which i am trying to get into the habit of doing. but then i worry i'll forget to change them back. anyway, things have improved and we aren't having many NMRs anymore. (Though all the games are paused this week so that helps lol)
jbalcorn (429 D)
10 Jul 09 UTC
That's how I use finalizing. I try very hard to put in a set of default orders right away, then tweak. If I see the tab with the 'x', I know I'm not 100% happy with my orders. When I decide to go with it, I finalize to get rid of the tab.
Xapi (194 D)
10 Jul 09 UTC
Yeah, I totally do that too. It has caused some problems though.
Friendly Sword (636 D)
10 Jul 09 UTC
Yeah, dj, you know better than I what happens when I procrastinate orders while waiting to hear responses to press. :S
Babak (26982 D(B))
11 Jul 09 UTC
writing 'prelim' orders is the way to go... it is the internet after all, it might go down in your house or you might run late getting home or whatever...

so always put in a set of "preliminary" orders... or 'prelim' orders... this was a big deal in the PBEM community... and some GMs would require prelim orders from all the players to avoid NMRs... its a good policy.

Unpause a game
We kind of have a problem in the game "Operation Big Brother". The german guy got banned, so the game was automaticly in Pause for waiting a remplacement.
We did have one, and need now to unpause the game. The problem is that the Italia guy never connect to the game !
So the Italia is the only one to not unpause the game, but as (I think) he will never come back anyway, we are froze for ever !
What shall we do ? =O
