Drama Queen Rating
I request the dev's to program this rating in each profile. I'd rather not play with people who have a high drama queen rating. I dont' care how it's implemented.

FDR, Reagan, and Rushmore.....?
Another 4th of July gone, and before the feeling of patriotism gives way to cynicism about my government TODAY (Palin resigning, and she wanted to be VP... sad) a question about the titans of YESTERDAY I've wondered for a bit-

Would you consider adding to Rushmore Reagan, FDR, both, neither, maybe a "new" Rushmore somewhere else.......?

Question for any Brits on here
We all know what you think of American's sense of irony or lack thereof.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
03 Jul 09 UTC
What do you think of the United State's independence day? Is it completely ignored? Does everyone dress in mourning? We've had pretty good relations in the 20th century, but before that we were at odds with each other, first King George asking for best two out of three with the war of 1812, and then whatever involvement there was in the US's Civil War.

On a side note, I heard a saying awhile back that makes sense from my perspective. "In the US a hundred years is a long time and in England a hundred miles is a long distance."

Thoughts?

lol :P

I've always been fascinated by the British Empire and immensely proud of my countries past, so I'm not going to pretend I don't think it's a shame we lost the colonies. Still, I don't do anything differently on the 4th July or feel any sadder for the anniversary of the loss.

Do we feel sad on the Philippine Independence Day?
Alderian (2425 D(S))
03 Jul 09 UTC
Sorry if I put the question wrong. I'm not asking if you are sad about it or not. I'm just wondering how it is perceived or if it is perceived at all.

For example, I'm aware of Canada day and Bastille day even though I have nothing to do with Canada or France.
Maniac (189 D(B))

Speaking as a Brit, I am aware of American Independance day and Bastille Day, etc. However, not having been around 200+ years ago it would be crazy if I were to feel sad over the a loss of some colonies. Time moves on and I have enough problems with coping with life as it is, rather than worrying about how things would've been if things had of turned out differently. Enjoy your Independence day.

:O Thanks for reminding me people - it's my parents wedding anniversary!
Yes though, as I brit I'm aware of it, as with a number of other major international events. Moreover its one of the ones I actually know the date of, but I don't do anything for it. With others I have trouble remembering exactly when they happen. I know we've recently had canada day because someone mentioned it here, and Bastille Day is in mid July because it's during the Tour de France so a Frenchman always goes off on a breakaway.

Is the USA independent??? I didn't know.
Captain Dave (113 D)
03 Jul 09 UTC
People know about America's Independence Day, but nobody really cares. Tomorrow I shall being playing cricket and not giving American independence a second thought. What I do find interesting, however, is how Americans seem to love the Royal Family, which, to me, is probably the biggest remaining symbol of our colonial past (and don't get me wrong, I think the Royal Family is a good thing for Britain). Can you explain that to me at all?
jbalcorn (429 D)
03 Jul 09 UTC
From what I see, I think we're fascinated with the royal family as celebrities. But I don't think we love them any more than any other celebrity. There's no feeling of loyalty at all.
Captain Dave (113 D)
03 Jul 09 UTC
Oh god, I never thought there was any sense of loyalty - after all, they're not American! So it's just celeb culture then, like when people go on a tour of LA and get the old "...and this is where Celeb X lives..." spiel.
I always hear that we Americans are fascinated with the royals, but i never met anyone who actually was.
Invictus (240 D)
04 Jul 09 UTC
I certainly don't care at all about the Royal Family, but then again I don't care much much about celebrities to begin with.

I will say that the one time people have actually gotten legitimately mad at a joke I made was one about Princess Di.
Invictus (240 D)

Draugnar (0 DX)

The US in general only really cared much about Pricess Di. It was the whole story book Princess, like Disney come to life, that captured the hearts of the women who are no in their 40s.

Why should England mourn about losing the American colonies? If American culture is a product of anything, it's England. The main language of America is still English, and not French or German (perhaps Spanish).
lkruijsw (100 D)
04 Jul 09 UTC
Booh! It is a mixture of European cultures. Clearly, the language originates from English. But, the separation of powers originates from France, the freedom of religion (and other liberal rules) originate from the Dutch. They vote with Yea and Nay which also originates from Dutch. And many traces of other cultures can be found. They are less visible then the language.

We don't mourn it. Given how much empire we had, if we mourned every loss we'd end up only ever wearing black.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Egads, the "mourning" thing was a joke. You all might corner the market on Irony but you could use some help detecting Sarcasm.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

Sarcasm, mainly being down to the tone, can be hard to detect. <sarcasm>You should use html</sarcasm>

Irony is easier to detect.
