Opinion on different map colors
I'm interested to know what people think of these colors, which apparently more commonly used on real boards these days:

Well I recently added a counter-intelligence panel to the mod CP alamothe, so we're monitoring their satellite projects closely (stabbeurfou seems to have had theirs for a whlie now though, damn this slower dev rate)
I like the proposed colour change, as the provinces are coloured the same way as the pieces for the Diplomacy board my friends and I play with. However, I also like the current colour scheme, and I would not mind if it was kept the way it is either. I wouldn't object to a change, and neither would I object to keeping things just the way they are.

The mainland Chinese came into the mainstream of PbEM when Stabbeurfou ran the World Diplomacy National Cup. A full Chinese team was recruited in China with mostly being engineering students at Xian and a small group at Beijing. I became the shadow mentor for the team.
They asked to make their own Chinese version to run the games in China and the Stabbeurfou folks helped them. They also asked about othersites and looked at open source codes to tinker with and that is how they touched on the php code here.
I have great hopes for the development of the Chinese hobby and look forward to someday returning to China to play in the first ever Chinese DipCon.

I like the colors in use on this sight except for the Austria and Russia colors are hard to decipher on the little squares behind the unit. Color saturation is different for different size fields of color and at that size they are hard to differentiate. Especially on lower quality monitors.

I know im biased but phpdip looks damn professional.
Stabbeurfou front page and map doesnt im afraid to say. It looks like it was made by people who Love diplomacy a lot but didn't think about accessibility, aesthetics or simplicity . however i haven't played there so i cant judge their unit ordering interface.
has anyone here?

I tried unsuccesfully to play on stabberfou a while back. The site itself was not very userfriendly, nor did it seem very welcoming for a novice. Personally, this has been the best site I could find so far. I love all of the features, and its not so riddled with options that you dont know whats going on. To me simple is better, and I dont require too many features other than the actual game of diplomacy, and of course this forum!

I don't particularly like that particular color scheme, but I wouldnt' mind some changes to the current one either, just to make it easier for people to tell Austria and Germany apart (I dont' really have any trouble on the map, but sometimes the text in the chat box is a little confusing as for whatever reason there i have a more difficult time telling the colors apart (and occasionally this doesn't just apply to germany/austria, though most often there)
I know that's not terribly helpful in that I don't have specific advice, but I do think something needs to be changed, just not sure it needs to be as extreme as that example.

I like the idea of silver-grey for Russia.

The Austrian colour is a bit grim, making it more browney would be nice.

I have some sympathy for making England dark blue - it should antagonise the Scots even more if we steal the colour of their flag as well as renaming their country.

And Sicarius - you must have been meeting the wrong french people, the ones I know are great.

The current colours match a version of the published game and look much more friendly than the others.

I think day glow colors would be best.

Ah, that's interesting. Let me know if that happens, I might be interested in coming. I'm a second (or perhaps first? such ambiguous terms) generation immigrant from mainland China. I still understand Mandarin and I've been looking to visit China again. The last time was 10 years ago... =/

As an American player who has played on an American board, I prefer those colors. I'm especially for adopting this color scheme because I think it would be more friendly to those who suffer from red-green colorblindness (although since I'm not colorblind I really can't know this for sure).

Probably the best way to do this is to present both map-coloring options as customizable settings for each account, and that one scheme or the other be adopted as the site's default (used to display maps to viewers not logged on).

Is that an easy-to-implement possibility?

By the way for the people who commented on Stabbeurfou and their issues I have sent them to that webmaster for him to work on along with some other issues and ideas to improve the site.

It is important as consumers/users/whatever to always let the creators know what we dislike and like so that they can do less of one and more of another.

Those colors are quite terrible - not only garish, but the high saturation makes it very hard to read labels in English and Austrian provinces while Germany is too dark to be easily read. Expect a lot of Silesia/Galicia and Holland/Belgium errors. The only problems I have with the current map are:

1) German units in Russian territories or visa versa are easily mistaken for the other country's units.

2) Turkish posts are next to impossible to read.

Of course colorblind people will have a whole different set of problems I do not experience.

Retreat Phase Suggestion
I know this has been brought up before, but I don't remember if there was support or not so I'll bring it up again. If a unit is dislodged and has no retreat options can we please change the code so a forced disband is automatic? It's incredibly annoying to wait on somebody to order his forced disband.

Bug?
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6952

This seems pretty basic, but there's either a bug, or I don't understand the rules? Take a look at the Iberian peninsula. Shouldn't the English attack on Spain cut the support to Mid-Atlantic Ocean?

My game got paused because Germany got banned. We all said /unpaused but Italy hasn't said it yet, so it hasn't unpaused. Is it just going to stay in limbo forever or what?

Games don't draw while paused?
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6969
The game got screwed up because of a failed attempt to pause (which later passed); we then voted to draw and were told the draw would come into effect in 5 minutes, but it hasn't happened and our best guess is that that the game can't be drawn while paused.

(a) that seems wrong. If we've voted to draw, then it should come into effect regardless of a pause. (b) can we get the game ended?

GFDT needs your help!
A player has had to drop out of the tournament in the early years of round 1. Is there any soul out there willing to take up his mantle and carry on the struggle for him?

Links to the games will be in the first post. If you're willing to take up these positions, drop me a line at [email protected] ASAP. It'd be a pity to play a tournament game with a CD.
