In this game: http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1750
Russia just moved off of all their supply centers and allowed Austria to take them, winning the game. Was a good game otherwise.

about gray press
when playing diplomacy using white/gray press format does it change dramatically the game (in a poor sense) or does it make it more interesting and challenging.

im new at this game and in another site where i play there the option to play with gray press is available. I refuse to play because i find it hard to play as it is, imagine with this "gray press" to keep in mind too; too much.

so to the more experienced/veterans diplomacy players, do you find compatible the "gray press" option in the game or is it a total aberrration?

what do you think?

Will it work?
I've got 18 supply centers this round accidentally but I don't want to win the game so quickly... if I miss the reinforce phase & let myself keep 17 units instead of 18, will I not win the game?

Solution to meta gaming!
Players wishing to play more than one country per game should be encouraged to have seven accounts. Then all seven accounts can log into the same game and the player is gauranteed to win. Once the infantile impulse to win at everything has exhausted itself the player can delete all the accounts, start a new one and come and play with the adults.

loving diplomacy
im really happy i found this game. I been playing for more than 2 weeks and is being great experience. Not only for enjoying the game as it is but it have lead me to read books on topics i never dream of reading; "diplomacy" by henry kissinger and "48 laws of power" by robert greene. Both excelent books.

Im 40 years old and started late in this game but ..."Nunca es tarde cuando la dicha es buena".

Idea
I was wondering if there were any past examples of diplomacy games with no communication between players.

I think it would be quite interesting as there would be much more guess work and alliances would be formed in a primal style.

What do you think?
dangermouse (5551 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
It's called Gunboat Diplomacy.

There's no way it would work here unless all attempted moves are displayed on the board.
The Mahatma (1195 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
I'd be into it.
thewonderllama (100 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
i thought gunboat was anonymous and what anlari is talking about is no-press.

anyway, i'd be game. if everyone was decent and stuck to not messaging others, it could be done with the current set up. and not showing all attempted moves might make it all the more interesting.
bihary (2782 D(S))

I would gladly try this variant. All we have to do is to decide not to communicate and go for it. Actually it would be very economic on time investment.
Darwyn (1601 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
I think I might be in a game like this. Well, not really, but this is my first experience with diplomacy EVER. I'm concentrating on just my one game here and it seems like NO ONE talks.

Does this happen to anyone?

I feel like I'm the only one making deals, talking about plans and if I'm lucky, I get a one sentence response in short hand.

I thought the point of the game was to communicate.

It's like I'm playing risk. Nonetheless, I'm still enjoying it, but I had higher hopes of willingness to communicate.
dangermouse (5551 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
People do communicate less on this site than at a table. I suppose the typing is harder or something. There are certainly some players who will send you paragraphs at a time, but most do not.
Karkand (2167 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
you know, I tend to want to ally and trust other players who are willing to spend at least a few minutes to write me coherent messages. Given a choice between allying with someone who won't write/coordinate and someone who will, the choice is obvious.
MarekP (12864 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
In a no-press games players communicate by their moves. It isn't possible here, because:

1) Not all moves are revealed to all players.
2) Illegal moves can't be ordered.
flashman (2274 D(G))

I'm not sure how a Diplomacy game without any diplomacy could be considered to be a game of Diplomacy?
Darwyn (1601 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
Karkand...agreed.

If I have open dialoge with a player, I'm more willing to ally with them than with someone who doesn't.

"I'm not sure how a Diplomacy game without any diplomacy could be considered to be a game of Diplomacy?"

LOL! Exactly. Otherwise, we are playing Risk(tm).
Jatexic (100 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
Flashman: Gunboat does have it's own sort of diplomacy. It wouldn't work here because you can't see what everyone's moves are. But sometimes moves speak louder than words. And a little confusion can be a lot of fun!
bihary (2782 D(S))
27 Oct 07 UTC
This game would not be diplomacy in the original sense, but could be lots of fun. Let us explore it with an open mind.
Wooble (450 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
You'd be amazed at the number of variants out there. I'm currently in a ridiculously slow game of Crystal Ball diplomacy where you only see the results of a phase after you've submitted orders for the next phase. Not exactly classic diplomacy, but still interesting in different ways.
alamothe (3367 D(B))
28 Oct 07 UTC
where can you play that?
Nick Douglas (408 D)
28 Oct 07 UTC
Yeah, in Gunboat, players can use nonsense orders to communicate their desire for other future moves.

As for talkative games, make a game called "For talkative players" maybe? I agree, the game's so much better with people who can write paragraphs.
thewonderllama (100 D)
30 Oct 07 UTC
are there enough people interested trying a game here without any messaging? i'd like to try it out if so...
The Mahatma (1195 D)
30 Oct 07 UTC
I'd be into it.

Ideally we could agree up front to play to win, and not for the points. And there should be no need to drag phases out the full 24 hours, given you wouldn't be awaiting diplomatic messages from any other players!

The Mahatma (1195 D)
31 Oct 07 UTC
Great! So that makes 7! Who's in charge of creating the game? It should be passworded so that nobody signs up accidentally. I am thinking we should call it Paranoia.

dangermouse, we shouldn't burden Kestas (unless he wants the burden). We just need to all be committed to the no-press rule and anyone who breaks the rule will be exposed and immediately ejected from the game.
The Mahatma (1195 D)
31 Oct 07 UTC
OK. I'll create the game. It's called No-Press Game and the password is "paranoia"

The following players are invited:
-bihary
-stoni90
-anlari
-thewonderllama
-bc2000
-dangermouse

(Sorry hanker, you were #8)

how can i see private games?
thewonderllama (100 D)
31 Oct 07 UTC
just click on the mahatma's name and you'll see it in his current games.
The Mahatma (1195 D)
31 Oct 07 UTC
Hey stoni - you're joining the no-press game, right? Just sign in and then go to Joinable Games. It should be there for you to join with the password.

You can see private games that you are not part of if you have the game ID.
The Mahatma (1195 D)
31 Oct 07 UTC
Once dangermouse signs in we're all set to go. Since there won't be ANY communication in the game (or any outside the game for that matter), I wish you all good luck here.

For those interested in watching a no-press game unfold, the game ID is 2022.

POSSIBLE BUG
I´m playing with Turkey. I have an army in Rumania, one more army in Bulgaria, and a fleet in Black Sea.
I´m trying to support from Rumania the attack from Bulgaria to Sevastopol by convoy in Black Sea; but i only can choose between support the attack from Ukraine or Black Sea.
When i choosed the Black Sea, system thought that i was trying to attack from Black Sea and not by convoy from Bulgaria.
How can be this?

Can players disband units in the very first move of a new game?
I am asking because I have been experimenting with a variant where each player starts with one less SC than the usual (each player's own choice). Easy to do on a board...

The purpose being to challenge each player as to whether building up their SC count at home is better than foreign expansion at such an early stage...

Future changes
Lots of complaints and so on that are repeating themselves, and some things that I should probably clarify so everyone knows which complaints I've taken on board

In the next release of phpDip there will be adjudicator improvements, and also these to address the more common complaints:
- The ability to choose whether a game is "winner takes all" or "points per unit", or "no points"
- Abandon game button (it would encourage game dropping without the points system, but with the points system it makes sense)
- More compatible chat-box CSS
- Moderator status, mods can ban users and see possible multi-account signs, and draw games
- Some kind of forum change to make it more organized and clear

I'll addd this to the FAQ when I get a chance

Adjudication issues
Can someone please tell me what rules are not completely implemented by the phpDiplomacy adjudicator, and what work-arounds, if any, exist? (For instance, I have heard that convoys involving multiple fleets is problematic.) If this information is alrady available somewhere, please provide a link.

Thanks very much.

Game Countries
So im just curious, I have played in about 12 games total since I signed up here, and the Last 4 games in a row I have been choses for Germany. In all the games I've played, except for one where I got Russia, I have been France, Germany, or Italy, nothing else. Is this a code error, or just a really weird coincidence?

something unbelievable!
in http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1926&msgmembershipid=11295, I am Turkey and I helped Germany to wipe out Austria in the Spring move, but after he got Warsaw in the fall move, he moved out of Trieste, so it remains as a Austria territory, but the Gamemaster already wiped out Austria, so can it still build units?

QUICK QUESTION...
I am Russia, and I have a fleet in the Black Sea and an army in Sevestapol. Turkey has a fleet in both Ankara and Armenia. Now he is undoubtly going to support himself into the Black Sea. However, if my fleet in the Black Sea attacks Ankara, and my army in Sevestapol attacks Armenia, will everything bounce? Because I attacked the supporting unit in both cases, so shouldn't it be a 1:1 bounce?
