In this game: http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1750
Russia just moved off of all their supply centers and allowed Austria to take them, winning the game. Was a good game otherwise.

about gray press
when playing diplomacy using white/gray press format does it change dramatically the game (in a poor sense) or does it make it more interesting and challenging.

im new at this game and in another site where i play there the option to play with gray press is available. I refuse to play because i find it hard to play as it is, imagine with this "gray press" to keep in mind too; too much.

so to the more experienced/veterans diplomacy players, do you find compatible the "gray press" option in the game or is it a total aberrration?

what do you think?

Will it work?
I've got 18 supply centers this round accidentally but I don't want to win the game so quickly... if I miss the reinforce phase & let myself keep 17 units instead of 18, will I not win the game?

Solution to meta gaming!
Players wishing to play more than one country per game should be encouraged to have seven accounts. Then all seven accounts can log into the same game and the player is gauranteed to win. Once the infantile impulse to win at everything has exhausted itself the player can delete all the accounts, start a new one and come and play with the adults.

loving diplomacy
im really happy i found this game. I been playing for more than 2 weeks and is being great experience. Not only for enjoying the game as it is but it have lead me to read books on topics i never dream of reading; "diplomacy" by henry kissinger and "48 laws of power" by robert greene. Both excelent books.

Im 40 years old and started late in this game but ..."Nunca es tarde cuando la dicha es buena".

Idea
I was wondering if there were any past examples of diplomacy games with no communication between players.

I think it would be quite interesting as there would be much more guess work and alliances would be formed in a primal style.

What do you think?

POSSIBLE BUG
I´m playing with Turkey. I have an army in Rumania, one more army in Bulgaria, and a fleet in Black Sea.
I´m trying to support from Rumania the attack from Bulgaria to Sevastopol by convoy in Black Sea; but i only can choose between support the attack from Ukraine or Black Sea.
When i choosed the Black Sea, system thought that i was trying to attack from Black Sea and not by convoy from Bulgaria.
How can be this?

Can players disband units in the very first move of a new game?
I am asking because I have been experimenting with a variant where each player starts with one less SC than the usual (each player's own choice). Easy to do on a board...

The purpose being to challenge each player as to whether building up their SC count at home is better than foreign expansion at such an early stage...

Future changes
Lots of complaints and so on that are repeating themselves, and some things that I should probably clarify so everyone knows which complaints I've taken on board

In the next release of phpDip there will be adjudicator improvements, and also these to address the more common complaints:
- The ability to choose whether a game is "winner takes all" or "points per unit", or "no points"
- Abandon game button (it would encourage game dropping without the points system, but with the points system it makes sense)
- More compatible chat-box CSS
- Moderator status, mods can ban users and see possible multi-account signs, and draw games
- Some kind of forum change to make it more organized and clear

I'll addd this to the FAQ when I get a chance

oh, and when is the custom deadline update coming?
alamothe (3367 D(B))
24 Oct 07 UTC
hi Kestas! in my opinion "winner takes all" should be "winner takes almost all" where winner takes like 75% of the pot (others have suggested different percentage, maybe it could even be adjustable) and all survivors share the rest equally
Nick Douglas (408 D)
24 Oct 07 UTC
Alamothe, is that close to "Points per unit"?
Wooble (450 D)
24 Oct 07 UTC
Points per unit is what we have now; what alamothe is suggesting is similar but would give a bonus for winning and a lesser distribution of points to the non-winning survivors.
alamothe (3367 D(B))
24 Oct 07 UTC
no, what i suggested here, and other players in other threads, doesn't take units in account at all. either you win and take 75% or you survive and take your equal part in the 25% - number of units doesn't matter
PolishTeaParty (389 D)
24 Oct 07 UTC
I don't see the point of that. Somebody with 1 unit clearly doesn't deserve the same as somebody with 15.
dangermouse (5551 D)

I disagree PTP. Both players LOST, why shouldn't they get the same point return.
fwancophile (164 D)

alamothe (3367 D(B))
24 Oct 07 UTC
no... anyway the creator of the game should have the option, so we can all play diplomacy the way we like it & be happy
Noodlebug (1812 D)

If I come a very close second I would be very disappointed to get the same point return as the guy who finishes on one unit. But it's not the sort of disappointment that makes me complain that the site sucks, it's the sort of disappointment that makes me try even harder next time to finish first. More players need to be instilled with a strong desire to win, and I think alamothe's idea would do that. Winning is an achievement, surviving is an achievement. Coming second is not an achievement and shouldn't get any additional reward. I don't want to see alliances based on helping another player come second in exchange for help winning the game. I want to see players fighting tooth and nail to win, and fighting tooth and nail to survive. I don't want to see anyone fighting to come second, what is the point in that? How can you deal with these people, how can you appeal to their ambition if they have none? If they are not interested in winning, then I cannot trust their motives for allying with me, and can have no confidence that they will fulfill their agreed obligations. It's a waste of time negotiating with them.
alamothe (3367 D(B))
24 Oct 07 UTC
also, Kestas, remember about draws! you may think they're not so important if you look at the number of requests since they're made possible. but this is for the current point system, where a large percentage of games is already ended by some kind of agreement, like 18/16 split or 18/8/8 split or something like that. this is a kind of draw (the players share victory / points) - in "winner takes all" game it would have been! so it's essential to have them, solo victories in this games will be rarer cause the player must against fight everybody in the endgame to take the victory

Oh boy, I'm excited. Can't wait!

Will there be an in-game messaging tab for everyone? There are things that don't need to be said in the forum, and wouldn't quite be appropriate in the current one on one messaging tabs, but would fit very nicely in an in-game communal messaging tab. I'd like to be able to greet everyone in a game, and congratulate the players with one message, as well as make declarations much more official. Nothing pressing, but it would make me very happy.

Sorry to be a morning grump, but I have truly had enough of noodle going on and on about winning and the dishonour of finishing second. Alright, dude, we get it.

With the 2 options for points, will the system have any meaning? Or will players have 2 sets of points, one earned proportionally and the other in winner-takes-most games.

Kestas, how about shortening the time to cd, or letting the moderator set it for individual games, or letting mods manually bounce players from games.

What are the performance measures for the points system? Is anyone analysing:
-number of players going into cd when they're losing
-number of new players who care about points
-number of games in which other players helped one player win in order to protect their points

How do you know it is an improvement? Are you sure it hasn't solved certain irritating things while creating new, larger problems?

I mean, what is a "stable" tarball?
berlinerkindl (100 D)
27 Oct 07 UTC
a tarball is similar to a zip file (not necessarily compressed, but usually is). Stable meaning, for the most part "stable" code which can be installed elsewhere.

Just a quick clarification for the benefit of TheMahatma: It's not a dishonour to finish second, it's a dishonour to WANT to finish second.
The Mahatma (1195 D)
30 Oct 07 UTC
Agreed, if you're talking about from the outset of the game. But then, if from the outset you WANT to finish second, you're probably cheating in that you're only there to help someone else finish first. Later in the game, there is no dishonour in wanting second - especially if you're in third or fourth.

But that's not the point, is it? The point is that players are concerned about how many points they're going to get and are playing to preserve their "investment". I wouldn't call this a dishonour - I would call it a perversion of the game. A greater perversion, in fact, than people abandoning.

Adjudication issues
Can someone please tell me what rules are not completely implemented by the phpDiplomacy adjudicator, and what work-arounds, if any, exist? (For instance, I have heard that convoys involving multiple fleets is problematic.) If this information is alrady available somewhere, please provide a link.

Thanks very much.

Game Countries
So im just curious, I have played in about 12 games total since I signed up here, and the Last 4 games in a row I have been choses for Germany. In all the games I've played, except for one where I got Russia, I have been France, Germany, or Italy, nothing else. Is this a code error, or just a really weird coincidence?

something unbelievable!
in http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1926&msgmembershipid=11295, I am Turkey and I helped Germany to wipe out Austria in the Spring move, but after he got Warsaw in the fall move, he moved out of Trieste, so it remains as a Austria territory, but the Gamemaster already wiped out Austria, so can it still build units?

QUICK QUESTION...
I am Russia, and I have a fleet in the Black Sea and an army in Sevestapol. Turkey has a fleet in both Ankara and Armenia. Now he is undoubtly going to support himself into the Black Sea. However, if my fleet in the Black Sea attacks Ankara, and my army in Sevestapol attacks Armenia, will everything bounce? Because I attacked the supporting unit in both cases, so shouldn't it be a 1:1 bounce?
