Not all the first settlements in Australia were covict settlements.. South Australia is particularly notable in that it was not a convict colony..free settlers from the UK and free settlers from Germany fleeing religious persecution for their Lutheran beliefs..it was Germans and some Englishmen eg Dr Penfold, who started the vineyards and wine industry in the Barossa area, not French emigrants.

As to us Australians being rather good, I'm hardly a high achiever or notable success but my ranking here speaks for itself, and over at VDiplomacy which is a recent activity for me, where I play one player V one player games I've completed 25 games and won 20..giving a win % of a nice round 80%.

As a West Aussie , joining the federation has been mostly good ...The fact that we get screwed on GST distribution is a modern criminal act. ( yes I know we had the chance to sit on the board who decided and choose not too ) BUT that does not excuse the very poor return we get.
