My firm opinion is that the best Turkish opening is:
Con->Bul
Ank->Bla
Smy->Syr
and the second best is the pitchfork:
Con->Bul
Ank->Bla
Smy->Arm
The Byzantine opening has a couple major drawbacks - one, it creates a roadblock in Con (armies in con have limited options, you want fleets there), two - it involves you in bullshit negotiations with Russia and Austria ("I'll support you to Rum", "No, I'll support you to Serb" etc). Not being involved in those negotiations means you can't be hoodwinked into silly moves.
On the other hand, opening to Syria says:
"Hey Italy, no lepanto is going to stick. You want to look elsewhere for your 5th build"
"Hey Russia, if you're going Mos->Sev, I'm going to bounce you out of Arm"
"Hey Everyone, I'm not really a threat. If you're looking to cut down the early leader, you should look elsewhere."
(However, I first saw the Syria opening made effective by the person who is writing these articles, so I think it's quite likely that we'll agree).
