US Spy Agencies Fall Behind Israeli Animal Spies

Israel used drones more effectively than the US for years so why not an animal spy gap.

Why do people draw so early?
I'm curious to learn y'all's opinion about putting up a draw vote very early on in a game. I especially see this in WTA gunboats, but I've also seen it elsewhere a lot too, where 1902/1903 - 5 or 6 of the players are already voting draw, before the game has even had a chance to develop. (okay admittedly I did the same thing in the last gunboat I played, but that's just 'cuz I drew Italy and I hate Italy).

Do YOU want to help develop webdip?

Hi everyone!

Webdip development continues to plod along, with 1-2 improvements per month. (see http://webdiplomacy.net/recentchanges.php for some of the recent improvements).

We've decided that it would plod along MUCH faster if we had more hands on deck. Are you interested in helping out?

We're looking for people with (ideally) the following skills:

* PHP
* MySQL
* HTML/CSS

and some skills that could also be helpful are:

* Git/github experience
* SVG (if you're interested in the map overhaul project)
* Experience with server admin and related tasks
* Experience with DB admin

Note that we're really looking for people who are able to work on improvements straight out of the gate - this project probably isn't for you if you're thinking "man, I've always wanted to learn to program", but it definitely is for you if you're thinking "man, I'd really like to use my existing programming skills to improve webdip".

The webdip codebase is (generally) pretty clean. Kestas has done an amazing job, and it's one of the nicest PHP projects I've ever worked on - although like any long-running project, it has the occasional racoon hiding in the wiring.

We haven't figured this out yet, but we'll probably create a new icon for people who develop the site (like the mod chequerboard or the donator icon). So, if you help out, you'll get fame and praise as well as the satisfaction of knowing that you're helping make webdip the best Diplomacy site on the web.

If you're interested, contact us at [email protected]. The instructions for contributors are here:

http://webdiplomacy.net/developers.php

and the issue tracker is here:

https://github.com/kestasjk/webDiplomacy/issues

Hopefully we'll get lots of interest, and we can set up a side channel for people working on the site (we used to have a developer forum, but it had to be shut down due to too much spam) so that we can all help each other out.

In the meantime, I'm available for any questions that you might have trying to get a test environment set up.

I'm looking forward to being able to sign these posts "webdip dev team member" :)

I can look up what PHP stands for, and that's about it.
thorfi (1023 D)

Woo, go devs go.

And ATC is right about the PHP - about 99% of all PHP code I've ever looked at is *horrendous*. This is literally the only PHP codebase I've looked at that in my whole career (which is significantly older than PHP is) that *isn't* a horrible mess.

And not only is it not a horrible mess, it's actually readable, reasonably well organised, modular, and all of those things that you want out of a codebase you're working on. :-)

@abgemacht I imagine there are things that might be good on that front - like maybe integrating Ghost Rating?
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
21 Aug 15 UTC
abge: Not really. Although there is a side project to replace GR with a better system (the side project is to design a better rating system). The code for that project is currently in Go, because I really like Go.

Chaqa: That would be great! The first step is to get a dev server up and running with the latest code - that's the litmus test we'll be using to see if people are suitable.

Thofi: Integrating GR would mean adding it to the site code in PHP.

"We're looking for people with (ideally) the following skills:

No.

My first thought when going to Steephie's website was "Who's Ijkhof?"

Here's an idea. Steephie donates 100 euros to webDip, which then employs him at a rate of 40 euros per hour for 2 1/2 hours. WebDip gets free work and Steephie gets to write some almost true bs on his CV. Everyone wins.

Better yet, webDip employs him for an hour and spends the rest on tournament trophies. I really like the 2014 tournament plaques. Light as a feather and so transparent it's almost as if they don't actually exist.

What skills would I need to go learn to help you add more variant maps to the site? I really want to add Imperial map variant to the site. I wrote the RealPolitik files that let them add Imperial to that application..... but that is NOT programming.

Made 4 small pull requests for outstanding issues for small things that helped me get acquainted with the code.

https://github.com/kestasjk/webDiplomacy/pull/167
https://github.com/kestasjk/webDiplomacy/pull/168
https://github.com/kestasjk/webDiplomacy/pull/169
https://github.com/kestasjk/webDiplomacy/pull/170

What are some of the most requested feature updates? Post suggestions here and +1 them if you like the feature request.

I also echo the statements about the code being very clean and organized compared with most PHP projects out there.

CD Take-over
When you take over a country in civil disorder, can you put in orders for the current phase? Or do you have to wait for the current phase to end before actually taking over?

i.e. country CDs right away, I take it over in Spring 1902. Can I enter orders for the spring?

Help the noob
I am in my first game and need a clarification. The setting was for 1 day/phase. The first phase is coming to a close. Is that just the diplomacy phase and then I will have another day to get my orders in - or - do orders have to be in at the end of the first phase.

Sorry for the noob question but I have searched the site and could not find the answer.

New player looking for advice
As someone who's never played Diplomacy before, I don't really want to join a game that's already in progress, being unable to gauge its position. At the same time, if I start a game that I want to say is 'for noobs' then a bunch of people will join it and destroy everyone else. There also aren't any starting-up games which will accept me as a brand-new player. Which approach is better for getting started: picking up games in progress, or starting my own games?

Hoping for a love child from webDiplomacy and Backstabbr
I just started playing online for the first time since the Diplomacy Judge days, and have a couple games here and a couple games at Backstabbr. I love the features here, but the UI for Backstabbr is far nicer (in the sense that it's easier to tell what's happening on the board). Any chance the developers here would work on a cleaner UI inspired by Backstabbr? Do others agree that the webDiplomacy UI could be improved?
