I am getting more and more interested into philosophy and things of that nature. Does anybody have any good recommendations for a good read about philosophy or anything related to it?

US Spy Agencies Fall Behind Israeli Animal Spies

Israel used drones more effectively than the US for years so why not an animal spy gap.

Why do people draw so early?
I'm curious to learn y'all's opinion about putting up a draw vote very early on in a game. I especially see this in WTA gunboats, but I've also seen it elsewhere a lot too, where 1902/1903 - 5 or 6 of the players are already voting draw, before the game has even had a chance to develop. (okay admittedly I did the same thing in the last gunboat I played, but that's just 'cuz I drew Italy and I hate Italy).

I completely see and agree with the logic using draws to resolve stalemates, as well as voting several years ahead of what would otherwise be a solo-finish, just to avoid the solo. But I don't understand all the 'draw' votes so early in a game -- yet I'm seeing it from so many other players that I'm thinking that there's a strategic reason I'm missing?

Most gunboat games with early draws are because there was an early CD or a player never showed up. Draws instead of Cancel punish the CD player. That way everyone can start over with the extra points and not have an unbalanced game where only a few could take advantage of CD.

Exactly. In the one we just had France being gone kind of messed things up. I would have waited until Austria was finished, but it wasn't a big deal either way.

This actually brings me to an issue I have, which is that way too many people seem to be putting up Draw instead of Cancel. Cancel is quite clearly what you should use, since that game isn't a 6-player Draw, it is a game canceled due to lack of participation. The presence of a lot of Draws that should be Cancels distorts statistics terribly.

I usually put up Cancel, then everyone else puts up both Draw and Cancel, except for a player or two who put up only Draw, perhaps out of greed, not sure, and I end up forced to Draw, unless I want to play a game with a CD, which I am fundamentally opposed to.

This was discussed by a few players in a recent game I finished. Majority opinion was a draw is preferred because it penalises and exposes the player who ruined the game. I think this preference is understandable and I would usually vote both but prefer the draw.

i wish you could cancel a game after it's drawn (still vote system). it would be interesting
Tantrum (4185 D(B))

Perhaps there is an option that makes the CDer lose out but doesn't distort the stats?

maybe cancels should distribute the points back to the remaining players, that seems fair

CDs are logged for RR purposes whether the game is drawn or cancelled. Points don't really matter all that much.

Or how about a feature request (programming change) where the definition of "cancel" is modified to essentially become the same as "draw" (in the sense that the CDer is penalized by losesing points the same was as a draw does); but the new "cancel" is different from "draw" in the statistics, not recorded as a silly 6-way draw ?

but then what if someone is eliminated i know i know... maybe if it is specifically resigned then you dont get your bet back
JamesYanik (548 D)

why not RECORD cancels... seriously, it won't count for finished games, but it would be separate.

Also, IIRC, a cancelled anonymous game does not allow you to see who the players were. It is simply wiped and doesn't appear in your list of games played.

I also have the doubt. But then again, i wonder why people like playing gunboats at all

I think the more important aspect of the "penalty" is revealing the name of the culprit - as thug said, points are really not that big a deal.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
23 Aug 15 UTC
Ghug's point is important - if a game is cancelled due to an early CD, then the player who CD'ed still suffers in terms of their Reliability Rating. In such situations I generally prefer to cancel.

CD Take-over
When you take over a country in civil disorder, can you put in orders for the current phase? Or do you have to wait for the current phase to end before actually taking over?

i.e. country CDs right away, I take it over in Spring 1902. Can I enter orders for the spring?

Help the noob
I am in my first game and need a clarification. The setting was for 1 day/phase. The first phase is coming to a close. Is that just the diplomacy phase and then I will have another day to get my orders in - or - do orders have to be in at the end of the first phase.

Sorry for the noob question but I have searched the site and could not find the answer.

New player looking for advice
As someone who's never played Diplomacy before, I don't really want to join a game that's already in progress, being unable to gauge its position. At the same time, if I start a game that I want to say is 'for noobs' then a bunch of people will join it and destroy everyone else. There also aren't any starting-up games which will accept me as a brand-new player. Which approach is better for getting started: picking up games in progress, or starting my own games?

Hoping for a love child from webDiplomacy and Backstabbr
I just started playing online for the first time since the Diplomacy Judge days, and have a couple games here and a couple games at Backstabbr. I love the features here, but the UI for Backstabbr is far nicer (in the sense that it's easier to tell what's happening on the board). Any chance the developers here would work on a cleaner UI inspired by Backstabbr? Do others agree that the webDiplomacy UI could be improved?
