Risk taking
http://youtu.be/vBX-KulgJ1o
Great video, but the first thing i think of is relationships, (and given that i was recently dumped, this is no surprise) Naturally you could also apply this to diplomacy; but the probabilities get a little messed up, and in Dip not taking a bet means taking a different course, which may also be risky.
orathaic (1009 D (B))

So how do you judge risk in diplomacy, and does this reflect on your behaviour in real life??

No I play a much riskier game than I play IRL.

A safe IRL makes me able to game more..I think there are 3 types of players ..complete newbs , gamers and players. gamers play for the fun , players are more serious.

(b) the two are hardly related, for me.

There is no risk in diplomacy. If you stab and it works you get to enjoy a fight for a potential solo. If you stab and it fails you get to enjoy the art of trying to worm your way out of it, and if that fails you get to enjoy fighting a rearguard action. There is no fear of failure as the failure of any specific action simply offers you a different reward.

More often than not life is very much the same. Very few people would have found the love of their lives, for example, if they hadn't been fortunate enough to fail abysmally in their earlier romantic efforts.
Well, there's the risk of elimination, where you get to watch the other players have fun while you're kicked out of the group because nobody likes you.
Octavious (1705 D)
11 Aug 15 UTC
Nobody likes you when you win, either :p. Victory and elimination are very similar in many ways. The game ends, and those people you have spent the past couple of months trying to get to know and understand suddenly vanish off the face of the earth. Like getting to the end of a good book, the emotional response generated by whether it was a happy or sad ending is less significant than the fundamental disappointment that it has ended.

In financial situations and alike, I will always take good bets. In many other cases it's hard to estimate, but I try to.

Worth mentioning is that you need to be pretty confident about your odds. If someone just tells you something, that's hardly the case.

Most people I know get good insurance, all-risk is hardly uncommon, but I think I will keep such things to a minimum, since insurance tends to be a 'bad bet'. On average you'll lose, otherwise the insurance company would've been out of business. There are certain risks which might be good to take on paper, but you simply can't really afford to take because your life is ruined if you 'lose the bet'. That's certainly something to take into account since you'll lose much more than the money value if you end up losing, so there is in fact more at stake.

When it's about relatively small costs and you tend not to break stuff, though..

"There are certain risks which might be good to take on paper, but you simply can't really afford to take because your life is ruined if you 'lose the bet'. " *cough* global warming *cough*

But regardless of the 'diplomacy is fun, win or lose' - you do take a risk with supply centers each time you send your troops away from them... But nobody sits back and says there are happy with the centers they have so lets not risk them!

What is the deal?
steephie22 (182 D (S))

Global warming is a bad example because we don't have a clue how large or small the risk we take is. I was more thinking about gambling your entire pension because there's a 50% chance you win and you can win 3 times your pension. You will make a great profit on average, but if you lose, you have no pension.
steephie22 (182 D (S))

Also, we don't experience game risks as relevant so we're not necessarily risk-averse there. Although it seems like that isn't always true.

"you do take a risk with supply centers each time you send your troops away from them... But nobody sits back and says there are happy with the centers they have so lets not risk them!

What is the deal?"

That's obvious, surely? Do nothing and you have 100% chance of failure. Move away from your centres and you have a chance of keeping them. Your confusing cowardice with taking the low risk approach.

Imagine you are in a house that is on fire. You can either take action by escaping through the window or running through the fire, or you can hide in your bed. Understanding that hiding under your blankets is a poor strategy is one of the basic things you learn on the transition from child to adult.

Ok, so what about the risk of betraying an ally to stop a solo. Or similarily to earn yourself a solo?

Do people avoid throwing away alliances because that is something they already have??
Octavious (1705 D)
12 Aug 15 UTC
To my knowledge I have never betrayed an ally to stop a solo. In terms of betraying an ally to earn myself a solo, it is extremely rare that the betrayal will result in anything other than the desired solo or a draw.

Sorry, I'm not trying to be awkward here. I genuinely don't see much risk in Diplomacy. I guess I tend to see less risk in life than many people.
orathaic (1009 D (B))
14 Aug 15 UTC
I would also self-report as not seeing risks in real life. But i feel there are circumstances where diplomacy mimics real life interactions.

Whether that is risky or not may depend on your perspective in life.

Pacific Northwest FTF
I've only ever played FTF with people who don't really care about the game and want to be done after a year, and I always feel a twinge of jealousy when I sew those people having fun playing in real life on that crappy coast across the country. This is just a post to see who might be interested in getting something set up on this side of the country. I'm in the Seattle area.

Conundrum
So the people who make the schedules at my school are kinda dumb. I signed up for both AP Micro/Macroeconomics and AP European History. Only one class of each is being offered. And they happen to be the same hour. So I need to drop one and pick up some other course. I really don't know, so what (preferably AP) course would you suggest for me to take instead of AP Micro/Macroeconomics (because there's no chance I'll drop Euro)?

Making cheating accusations via in-game global press is not allowed, right? The correct procedure being to email the mods who will investigate?
