All this game does is make me angry
The interpersonal aspect of this game is just so frustrating. My expectations for how this game is played is completely thrown out the window.

Jamiet> Social skills are the #1 skill required to be truly good at the game of diplomacy. This is not a wargame simulation - it is an abstract boardgame in which the single most important skill is the ability to talk.

Principians> (unless you limit yourself to play gunboats, of course)

... if you define talking as communicating with words, yeah. But there's lots of talking in gunboat, it's just done with units instead of words.

Gunboat doesn't absolve you from the need to think solidly about the social aspects of this game. I am a giant gunboat fan, but even in that variant of this game, you really need to be playing the players, not just the board.

And +1 to comments from abge and others - there's a reason I'm not currently in any full press games, I can't commit to sending several messages per season at the moment.

O course 'talking' is also important in gunboats, but I'm not sure it still the #1 skill, specially compared to tactics, since much of the 'talking' and tactics are acutally the same thing.
In fact even in normal games, I'm not so sure tactics are so unimportant as it could be ndertood from some posts: because, yes, you need to talk but, about what? tactics (well and of course, strategy).
Actually I think the most important difference between gunboat and normal games is the difference between tactics and strategy.

Principians: Mmm, how so on the last point? Tactics and strategy are pretty critical in both. You mess up either in either variant, you can be screwed, in the short and long term respectively.

Also, don't get me wrong, there *is* also significant difference in the level of tactical options available to you in press games (even public press only makes a huge difference) because you can communicate in detail about options.

There's also a lot more scope for "talking your way out of trouble" in press than in gunboat, for sure. I don't mean to pretend at all that talking isn't more significant in press games. It absolutely is. :-)

I just object to the idea that the social aspect is unimportant in gunboat - for the same reason that I would object to the idea that the tactical/strategic aspects are unimportant in press.

Both are required for good play, in both variants. And I'm not sure one or the other aspect really dominates over the other, in either variant.

Has anybody considered the impact of time zones on amount of press? I imagine I'd be right in saying that the majority of this site's members are in the USA, or at least the western hemisphere, and the majority of members will work a 9-5 Monday-Friday shift pattern. If you are the only European playing six Americans, you're getting up just after they have gone to bed, getting home from work just after they have left for work etc etc. Doesn't leave much opportunity for press.

The gap in time between the last post here and mine proves my point.

Or Australian \o,

:-) Timezones would definitely have an impact on press and make it more difficult. Not impossible though, and if you play longer turn games it's a smaller effect.

Yeah, it does have an impact, but there's really just an 8 hour window that I'm not checking press. Plus, there are enough players from Europe to compensate.

Prince it seems you have mistaken a boardgame for a fridge.
"I'm not arguing that more messages doesnt not give you better results"
This probably isn't helpful, but did anyone else notice this? Typos and unintelligible text can also make your press less appealing and effective.

Brand new game with full disclosure (A Midsummer's Eve)
I have just created a brand new game, password protected, non-anon and full press. If still permitted, I would like to play this game with someone whom I know in real life. This player is Doug7878 who is my Dad.
The password is the word "agree," entirely in lowercase.

CDs and the collapse of empires
Just wanted to observe how frustrating it is when a player becomes less committed to the game when they look to be in trouble. What can possibly be done to stop this ruining end games for everyone else?

(Also, someone (ghug?) mentioned not long ago a game where Germany recovered from 2 centres to solo. I can't find it again, can someone point me in the right direction?)

If yes, do you think they would ban me before I successfully made 20 threads?

The Deathcount of Wall Street
I was thinking of doing some research on how many people died by Wall Street practices (through sucking companies out causing unemployment, profiting from and at the cost of pension funds ruining people's pensions, etc, etc.).

Does anyone have an idea of where to start and how to go about this?

Gunboat Etiquette
After several games of anon gunboat coming and going with not enough players, I finally had one start today. It was my first time, I've never played anon gunboat before. Well, I was Russia and in the first turn England, Germany and italy NMRd. Then England and Germany went CD and Italy finally started making moves.

Why so many gunboat games ?
I don't really have a problem with gunboat but I thought this game was designed for people to talk between themselves and scheme and form alliances in advance and fool your allies telling them you will, for example, support them somewhere but end up attacking them instead. For a few weeks I've seen only gunboat (live games)
