Who are your favourite characters? Why?
What do you think of the plot sequences: Atlanta in Season 1 -> Hershel's farm in S2 -> the prison in S3 -> the road to Terminus S4? (->Alexandria Free-Zone S4?)

Do you think the show breaks stereotypes and/or reinforces stereotypes?

I gave it a shot but it never really grabbed me. I watched about 6 episodes of the 1st season and it got a bit repetitive. Fight zombies in one place, go somewhere else, fight more zombies, go somewhere else....

I felt like they ripped off the characters from Lost too.

Walking Dead is a great show!

Maybe I should give it a second chance.

Walking Dead is pretty good. IIRC one of the seasons, either 3 or possibly 4, slowed way the heck down in terms of plot advancement. Season 5 picked up the pace again and was better. I am looking forward to Season 6.

Ripped off characters from Lost? I haven't watched Lost so I can't make a good comparison, but the Walking Dead comics started in 2003 while the first episode of Lost aired in 2004.

I watch every season and generally enjoy it.
Season 1 was aweeome. They definately lost their way in Season 2 at the farm. Then it was decent for a few seasons until culminating into the past two seasons which were awesome.

My one issue with the show is that they do a rather poor job with alot of the characters. They make alot of bad decisions without enough context of why. And some characters seem to change a bit too rapidly.

For instance....Glenn was awesome in Season 1 and was alot of fun....then suddenly stopped. Carol was a nice later...then suddenly murders people. My issue isnt that they changed but they didnt do a good job of taking their time with the transition.

Also...did you notice that Zombiea are as tough as they need to be for any given scene?

In some scenes 2 zombies wipe out a whole camp of people...and in another one guy is buried in them and survives.

@marquis: get past season 1. Eventually the zombies become less of a threat factor, especially individually or in small groups. Now it's about building and finding a community you can trust. The way they built the show in the last 2-3 seasons, you feel you're in their shoes to where everyone you meet, you become suspicious of. You'll think everyone has an agenda.

@dyager: I think that's what makes the show great. People do change, and in a society without rules where every day is a possible fight, it can play on you.

Every time the group found sanctuary, it fell apart, especially the prison. They setup a great life there that had the ability to let them raise families. When that sense of security in a world of uncertainty is lost and gained over and over, it has adverse effects on people. Some lose hope, some do things they wouldn't do in order to survive. Carol, Carl, Rick, Andrea, all are/were great examples of that.

Tyrese is an example of someone who drastically changed in a believable way. Daryll changed slowly and in a very believable way. Carol and Glenn are ones who seemed they changed in drastic unbelievable ways for show convenience.

I don't really recognize a change in Glenn

He was super fun and games and kind of enjoyed the apocolypse in Season 1 and part of 2. Then at the farm he became super boring and serious.

I think Glenn became more aware of his responsibilities within the group and to people he was starting to view as family -- there's an important scene with Maggie halfway through Season 2 where he talks about how the post-apocalypse can seem to be like video games (he references Portal) and he realises he has to stop treating the world like that. If Maggie dies he can't reload an earlier saved version, he has to protect his family in this one chance he's got - I think it's its powerful message for a generation of young people raised with video games providing alternative (near)-virtual reality.

It would have been easy to reserve Glenn as a stereotype or cliche character providing comic relief -- but his hardening character development shows its not just the Ricks and Merles of this world who can be tough guys; it can be the Carols and Glenns too. When Glenn stood up to Merle in Season 3 that was massive.

Also, so many great, intetesting Lost characters ends up being wasted as stock comedy characters...the way Sawyer was reduced to 2 comedy hillbilly klutz was a complete waste.

I really like the show. I think it is great, but I fear that it is diverging from the comics a bit. That is one of my only critiques.

Is anyone worried the spinoff will suffer because there is no comic basis for it?

ND: Totally worried about the spinoff. Kind of hate the idea. The only redeeming factor is that AMC has a pretty good track record of original content...and hell...let's be honest....it's a fucking zombie show. Who won't like it, who is already pre-disposed to watching monster/zombie movies.

I grew up watching some really piss shit poor movies...but they were *monster* movies, so I was willing to endure most anything.

Therefore...this spinoff will succeed, becuase zombie-lovers will love zombies.

Seriously, how long could they do a show about pure zombie fighting? It would grow old.

Much like light saber fighting in Episode 4 completely and totally sucks because they didn't know how to stage a sword fight, and they are completely insane by Episode 3, so too did TWD evolve.

By now, the show is not about zombies. It is now a show about the post-apocolypse, and about human interaction when the world goes to hell.

IN the beginning, three zombies in a row would scare the shit out of everyone. By now....they fight fucking hordes without batting an eye....in other words, it isn't *really* about zombies....but the show would still suck without zombies, paradoxically.

@Krellin: I agree with your assessment. It is likely AMC will be successful because much of their original content is good and you are right that zombie lovers will flock to it if it is good (if it's bad who knows?). The pilot needs to be good and I bet it gets some insane views.

@Krellin/Wjessop: As for breaking/reinforcing stereotypes. I don't really care. I watch television for enjoyment and escaping the mundane. Not to analyze every scene for stuff. I have to do that already in my grad research so not really going to be doing it for recreational purposes.

I don't like it. But I've tried being rational with krellin and it doesn't work, sometimes water doesn't fight fire, sometimes fire is needed: if all that racist can do is come in to this thread, which I started as a happy appreciatin if this show, and be an utter abusuvr arsehole than I don't feel I'm cutting my principles to tell him in his own language how little I care for his nonsense.
