Gunboat lovers, unite
Coming back from a slight hiatus, I'm looking for a gunboat game, WTA / 36h. Who's in? If there's enough interest, I'd like to start another series in the Tournament / Biggest Loser vein.

News sources
I'm giving up on the BBC. I used to think the BBC was a half-decent source of *relatively* unbiased news, but I realise that's no longer the case and may not have been for some time.

Russia Replacement in Classic Diplomacy-33
Hello everyone, we're looking for a Russia replacement in a high quality classic, anon, WTA game. Russia has a good strategic and (probably?) diplomatic position. The board is very even at 8-8-6-6-6 and the global chat decided it would be better to continue this amusing game rather than other options; there's no password on it and it is currently paused.

Altering the game for Italy?
In light of expert opinion such as this, "In a high-standard game, I would put Italy's chances of winning at zero, I'm afraid." The Game of Diplomacy by Richard Sharp, has there ever been serious consideration to altering the classic game to give Italy: i) two fleets instead of one to start, ii) another close-by neutral sc, or iii) some other incremental advantage?

support of convoying
Hello,

I have a general question of sorts about convoys:
metaturbo707 (126 D)

Is there any way in which to provide support to a convoy move?
For instance, one fleet convoying one army from one space to another, if there is a fleet in a territory adjacent to the fleet which is convoying, can it somehow support the convoy against disruption or provide support of any kind to the convoy maneuver?

Thank you very much!

You can support hold the convoying fleet with another fleet so it isn't dislodged.
You can also support move the convoyed army to the location it is being convoyed.
A convoy is only disrupted if the fleet is dislodged, but a convoy may bounce just as any other move may bounce.

any fleet adjacent to another convoying fleet can support hold that fleet to hold to prevent the convoying fleet from being dislodged. any fleet (or army) adjacent to the convoyed army's destination can support the actual army movement.

Convoys are only disrupted if the convoying fleet is dislodged. Thus, two opposing fleets working together to dislodge your unit are required to stop the convoy. However, if this is the case, you may simply support hold this fleet, and the fleet will still convoy.

y2kjbk - So to provide support to the actual unit being convoyed - what happens at the destination territory? Of course the convoy succeeds if the destination is unoccupied and uncontested. Now what if the destination is occupied? As you said an army adjacent to the destination territory can support the army movement. Does this mean that an army can be moved into an occupied territory by convoy, if the convoyed army is supported by the army in the adjacent territory? I read a fleet cannot "convoy support" to a destination unit. Besides that however, does the convoy move work the same at the destination as a normal land move, in which the move will succeed if there are more attackers than units holding? Thanks!

abgemacht - Should I interpret your comment "You can also support move the convoyed army to the location it is being convoyed" as referring to a potential order to a fleet adjacent to the convoying fleet? Or what unit in what location can provide the support move? Thanks!
Yaleunc (11052 D(B))

The note that you can't "convoy support" refers to the fact that you can't have the convoyed unit support another unit into the destination. For example say England has an army in Lon and fleets in North Sea and Bel and France has armies in Wal and Bre and fleets in English Channel and MAO. France can convoy Bre-Lon (I.e. Bre attempts to move to Lon) and Wal can support Bre-Lon. The fleet in MAO can support hold the fleet in the Channel so that Engkand's fleets in Nth and Bel could not dislodge the convoying fleet in Channel. Support not being convoyed means that you could not as France have Wal attack Lon with support from the army in Bre via convoy by the fleet in the Channel. Of course the fleet in the Channel could still provide a direct support of the Wal-Lon move.

You can also go look at the DATC cases from the FAQ page. http://webdiplomacy.net/datc.php#section6

what yaleunc said. if the destination territory is occupied or another unit is attempting a move in, you'll need an adjacent unit to support the convoyed army, potentially more support if the opposing unit has any support. in yaleunc's example, MAO cannot support the convoyed army to London since it isn't adjacent to London, and you wouldn't even be able to enter "Mid Atlantic Ocean support move to London from Brest".

It might be useful to provide some examples:

1. Supporting a convoying fleet to prevent dislodgement:

England has fleets in North Sea and Norwegian Sea, and an army in London
Germany has fleets in Belgium and Denmark

England orders:

A Lon - Norway via convoy
F North Sea convoy an army to Norway
F Norwegian Sea holds

Germany orders:

F English Channel move to North Sea
F Denmark support move to North Sea from Belgium

In this scenario, England's fleet is dislodged from North Sea, and the convoy fails. The army remains in London.

If England's orders were changed to:

A Lon - Norway via convoy
F North Sea convoy an army to Norway
F Norwegian Sea support hold the unit in North Sea.

.... then North Sea would not be dislodged and the convoy would succeed. The army would take Norway successfully.

2: Supporting an attacking army, which is moving by convoy.

England has fleets in North Sea and Norwegian Sea, and an army in London
Germany has an army in Norway.

England orders:

A Lon - Norway via convoy
F North Sea convoy an army to Norway
F Norwegian Sea holds

Germany orders:

A Norway holds

England's attempted convoy to Norway would fail because of the German army already there.

If England's orders were changed to:

A Lon - Norway via convoy
F North Sea convoy an army to Norway
F Norwegian Sea support move to Norway from London.

.... then the London army's convoyed attack on Norway would have a strength of 2. The German army in Norway would be displaced, and England takes Norway.

* Ack - in the first example, Germany's orders should read:

F Belgium move to North Sea
F Denmark support move to North Sea from Belgium

y2kjbk - So basically, as I understand it, once the convoyed army is considered "arrived" at the destination it acts like any other unit moving into a territory ?

Meta - the convoyed army functions the same as any other attacking army (as long as the fleet convoying it does not get dislodged). One other important thing to note is that if the fleet is dislodged then the convoying army is not considered to have attacked its target so other units (including the dislodged fleet) are free to retreat there as long as no other units attacked that space.

Death of Tamir Rice
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-30172433
A 12-year-old, Tamir Rice, was shot by a police officer on Saturday. Rice was pointing a fake gun at citizens in a park, so police were called. The officer mistook it for a real gun, and asked Rice to put his hands up. Instead, Rice reached for the airsoft gun, which didn't have the orange tip to distinguish it as such, and was shot twice by the officer and died the following morning. Discuss

What would make you most likely to try to get me customers? What's best for me? How much per paying customer should I offer? Should I offer several options?
