Gunboat lovers, unite
Coming back from a slight hiatus, I'm looking for a gunboat game, WTA / 36h. Who's in? If there's enough interest, I'd like to start another series in the Tournament / Biggest Loser vein.

News sources
I'm giving up on the BBC. I used to think the BBC was a half-decent source of *relatively* unbiased news, but I realise that's no longer the case and may not have been for some time.

Russia Replacement in Classic Diplomacy-33
Hello everyone, we're looking for a Russia replacement in a high quality classic, anon, WTA game. Russia has a good strategic and (probably?) diplomatic position. The board is very even at 8-8-6-6-6 and the global chat decided it would be better to continue this amusing game rather than other options; there's no password on it and it is currently paused.

Altering the game for Italy?
In light of expert opinion such as this, "In a high-standard game, I would put Italy's chances of winning at zero, I'm afraid." The Game of Diplomacy by Richard Sharp, has there ever been serious consideration to altering the classic game to give Italy: i) two fleets instead of one to start, ii) another close-by neutral sc, or iii) some other incremental advantage?

Favorite Music of 2014
I always find great new music when "best of" lists come out at the end of the year. What albums or songs were your favorite this year?

Best songs:

"Light Will Keep Your Heart Beating In The Future" - Mike Doughty

I didn't fall in love with very many new albums this year.

The ones I listened to most heavily were probably:
Lazaretto - Jack White
They Want My Soul - Spoon
This Is All Yours - Alt-J

The Hunting Party - Linkin Park - arguably a revival of nu metal
Love Death Immortality - The Glitch Mob - EDM with broad appeal

@ Valis:

I am in complete agreement. "Everything Will Be Alright In The End" is the best new album of 2014 - and the best Weezer album since "Maladroit". I love it. My own fave track from that is 'Eulogy for a Rock Band'.

=W=

Also the latest Mastodon album is pretty good.

+1 for Shovels and Rope. Awesome album. I need to think on the others - a year is a long time, hard to remember what's actually from this year

Well, fuck you guys too
Yeah +1 Shovels and Rope and Jack White. Do you like Shakey Graves, 2nd? Also, considering the overlap in our selections, do you have anything else to recommend? From my list check out the bands you haven't heard of, they are all Canadian and great. You mentioned you had some buddies who play in a local band??

Also, there has to be some more people on here who like music..... throw us some bands to check out.

Pretty wild selection but the following all brought out some ace stuff this year: Every Time I Die and Secret Band (both post-hardcore). Grimes and FKA Twigs (electronic/experimental). Run The Jewels (rap), Have A Nice Life (post-punk), Kate Tempest (spoken word), Royal Blood (straight up rock) and Jhene Aiko (soul/R&B).
Also obvious shouts to Morrissey and Aphex Twin for still killing it.

@Lando, Phish clearly isn't Canadian ; ). I think you left off my favourite Canadian album of the year, Mac Demarco - Salad Days. Reflektor also bears mentioning.

@kdobailey, Grimes is great but what has she done this year?

The 2014 albums I listened to the most were Lost in the Dream by the War on Drugs, High Noon by the Arkells and Are We There by Sharon Van Etten.

I just realized that Himalayan by Band of Skulls was this year. Excellent album.
I assume everyone has heard of phish, so I do not accept your criticism.

@Yonni just the single 'Go' (which was pretty good) but I thought I should mention her anyway. Spread the love.

I like your picks Lando, you've given me some solid recommendations in the past. I've been listening to a lot of Boy & Bear, The Wild Feathers, and The Weeks, who are amazing. Check out their track "Buttons". I've also been into a lot of older alt-rock lately too - Tom Waits and Uncle Tupelo, mostly.

Death of Tamir Rice
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-30172433
A 12-year-old, Tamir Rice, was shot by a police officer on Saturday. Rice was pointing a fake gun at citizens in a park, so police were called. The officer mistook it for a real gun, and asked Rice to put his hands up. Instead, Rice reached for the airsoft gun, which didn't have the orange tip to distinguish it as such, and was shot twice by the officer and died the following morning. Discuss

Affiliate marketing for webhosting: What sounds more appealing/is best?
Discount? Free months? Extra space/bandwidth? Extra site for free/discount? Credits to spend on services? Simply a tiny amount of money paid out to you? Some combination?

What would make you most likely to try to get me customers? What's best for me? How much per paying customer should I offer? Should I offer several options?
