WTA is the one which follows the rule of Win, if not then Draw, if not then hope for better luck next time. Since the rules only allow for victory conditions and draw conditions, it's obvious that an 18-center win is not worth just barely more than the 15-center surviving moron who enabled it by not constructing an alliance.

PPSC is horrible, because it encourages stabbing, and brutally, the only thing holding that 15 center Russia at bay. Or destroying the draw alliance completely the moment it's clear that it'll fail.

WTA and I've made my point clear in your other thread. I don't hate PPSC per se, but it is not my game format of choice.

The scoring methods of "WTA" and "PPSC" are specific to the points system on this site, but they roughly correspond to the "Win Only" and "Strong Second" concepts that generally apply and have been long debated before WebDip even existed.

The creator of the game, Allan Calhamer, wrote an article clarifying his stance, which seems to strongly favor the "Win Only" objective. Thus, I think it's fair to say that WTA is closest to the way he intended the game to be played.

I prefer WTA games to PPSC games.

But what I really dislike on webDip is that Draws are treated the same with respect to webDip Points in both WTA and PPSC games.

If the game is WTA and someone gets more than 50% of the SCs, the winner takes the entire pot and everyone else gets nothing. If the game is voted to be a Draw, all surviving players share the pot equally.

If the game is WTA and someone gets more than 50% of the SCs, the game ends and the pot is apportioned to the survivors based on SCs. If the game is voted to be a Draw, all surviving players share the pot equally.

That just doesn't seem right to me. If the final pot apportionment of a WTA game with a winner is different from that with PPSC, then it stands to reason that the final pot apportionment for a Draw should also be different, and done according to SCs controlled at the time of the draw.

If PPSC games are going to proportionately reward victors, they should also proportionately reward losers.

Furthermore, if PPSC games were changed this way, it would provide an incentive for players to play to win instead of playing to draw when faced with a tough situation. Weaker nations can still band together against the table threat, but the rewards for doing so aren't as great.

PPSC is by far superior in every way.

For example, I joined two games recently. One out of boredom because it was 12 hour phases; and another was a pickup CD out of the goodness of my heart. I didn't realize they both were PPSC until after I joined.

And like getting a Red Ryder BB Gun, boy was I delighted.

Quickly I was able to storm the board and take up a critical position against the leaders in each perspective game. One being a gunboat (the best kind of PPSC game), I knew my allies to the east would back me up no matter what. The draw was at hand. Victory was moments away.

In my FP game, I could sense my joining a CD was appreciated by the board to make a hard lined stance against the Imperial Germany. My allies showered me with praises, and I could just sense the tenderness in tone from my neighbors.

In fact in both games we worked so closely together to prevent a solo victory from our aggressor, that as the game was nearing an end, my allies decided to make our union official and eliminate our cultural boundaries.

It was a great bonding experience, and nobody got their eye shot out. I recommend it to everyone.

And then you all held hands and had a group hug and everyone was happy because you didn't play real Diplomacy.

It was magical.

Just because PPSC has some good games doesn't mean that it is "superior in every way".

It's great that PPSC has good games. Now what makes WTA worse? Because I can guess with a good chance of guessing correctly that it isn't because it is WTA.

WTA, hands down. PPSC encourages bad play and "I'll help you solo if I get the second-most" play.

i can't see what the fun in "being in a winning alliance" is. of course you're going to win when you own 20+ centers together, but where's the fun in that?

The non-trivial task of making sure no one stabs each other? That it resembles (some types of) tournament play?

you're talking about wta here. in wta, i have to ensure that in the end, i'm the one ending up with 18 centers while my ally gets 16. ppsc encourages not to care whether you or your partner wins.

Not a lot of love here for PPSC. So why is the default game set this way?
