Bad luck on the world map...
Which countries is it unluckiest to be landed with playing gunboat on the World Diplomacy XI map? Surely some are especially awkward to deal with. I'm looking at you, Australia...

Is there anything that forum members know nothing about?
It seems that we have many experts on here, but I'd like to find out what we don't know. Post your topics to see if we can find something we all know nothing about. I'll start.

Christie linked to Fort Lee traffic
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/09/nyregion/christie-aide-tied-to-bridge-lane-closings.html?hp&_r=0

Officials from Chris Christie's office have reportedly been linked to lane closures earlier in September as a measure of political retribution against the mayor of Fort Lee, NJ.

I know you should expect to be backstabbed in this game but I feel like im being backstabbed every time I make an "alliance". Is this normal and does anyone else feel like they are being backstabbed this often?

Because Racism and Stereotyping is NOT an Exclusively-White Practice...
http://shine.yahoo.com/parenting/tiger-mom-39-book-stirs-culture-wars-195300564.html The high drama Tiger Momma has selected 8 select groups as being more naturally-successful than others--Mormons, Cuban exiles, Nigerian Americans, Indian Americans, Chinese Americans, American Jews (we're the Chosen People Again...yay?), Iranian Americans and Lebanese Americans...Stereotyping--selling shitty books since the Dawn of Time!
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Jan 14 UTC
And apparently we're all so successful because we, ahem, have a triple package:

"A superiority complex, insecurity, and impulse control."

So in other words...we're all characters from out of a Woody Allen movie.

...Hopefully it's one of the good ones?

(At the risk of stereotyping myself, though, I have to say--I see Chinese-Americans there...but no Japanese or Korean-Americans, and they're pretty well spoken for in academia and the business world as well...simple oversight, or that fun Chinese/Japanese/Korean three-way animosity and rivalry creeping up again? YOU be the judge!)

I saw a story about this. Nothing interesting. Some Asian bigot that needs validation that she's inherently better than others.

THREE THREADS. REALLY?

TWO of them are pathetic cries for attention.

You are an utterly worthless excuse for a human being.

obiwanobiwan (248 D)

That, and the fact she's playing up the "Jews Are All Rich" stereotype again...

Yeah--that doesn't have a negative connotation or history to it at all. :/

Besides which, she has a pretty limited definition of success--

I know the Peruvian and Mexican-American students I have were the hardest working of all, they put in a hell of a lot more effort than any other one group to try and work on their papers or brush up on their Shakespeare and Virginia Woolf...

None of them were shooting for the kind of high-paying professions Ms. Tiger Mom seems to think defines success, but I'd say working extra-hard to understand a new language and succeed in a culture that--still--discriminates hugely based on the way you speak is pretty special and worthy of commendation.

But they weren't Cuban exiles, so apparently...fuck them. >:/

Oh maple, I can't help it...

According to the Tiger Momma, I have a superiority complex AND I'm insecure because, hey, all Jews, Indians, Chinese, Nigerian, Lebanese, Cuban, and Mormon folks are...

So just be happy I don't have 13 threads on the front page right now!

'Cause I'm taking over, maple...THE JEWS ARE TAKING OVER...

Tiger Momma's forming an alliance with The Secret Alliance of Jews That Run Shit to form the greatest economic superman of all--

A Wongstein!

"If the immigration policy only allows the best and brightest in then sure it looks like a certain groups appear superior"

1. The immigration policy DOESN'T just allow the best and brightest in,
2. It'd be a nightmare of a whole other kind if it did,
3. Superior my ass...why, as fiedler so kindly points out, I am living proof that it doesn't matter WHAT culture you're born into...

You can be born a "superior" American Jew and still be an All-American Millennial Schmuck like me!

(Actually, on that note...have fun, Baby Boomers, I apologize--we're the worst!)

Actually, some immigration policy is oriented to only accepting "the best and the brightest" although, in the case of Indian Software Developers it EFFs (Epic Fucking Fails) as those folks are worth about 1/5th of a local American or a Russian and cost about 40% so you pay twice as much to get the same theoretical amount of work and still they couldn't code their way out of a wet paper bag.

a former colleague suggested once that we should have an open immigration policy that accepts that accepts all comers without discrimination, provided they are single females above the age of consent, with a maximum age and BMI both set at 25.

What is lamer than people who join but don't move?
I am new to this web based forum, but holy cow is there anything than people who don't move? I mean for crying out loud, you have 12 hours! to figure out what to do and, nope, can't be bothered! Yeah, it kind of wrecks the game for everyone else when the neighbor of the lamehead grows too strong too fast, but whatevs.

And joining a live game minutes before then simply doing limp? WTF?

The People's Choice--Facebook's Top 5 Great Authors...by Likes--Thoughts?
At least from my searching for them on the pages with the most likes to their name...leaving aside the J.K. Rowlings, Stephenie Meyers, And Stephen Kings--Shakespeare (surprise!) ranks 1st with 6.8 million, Maya Angelou (surprise...?) is 2nd with over 4 million, Gabriel Garcia Marquez is 3rd with over 3 million, Fyodor Dostoyevsky ranks 4th with 1 million, and Jane "Life Begins at Man and Gossipy Bickering" has 900K. ...Thoughts on what that says about our popular choice in classic authors?

Player needed
gameID=132903

Anon, 50 point buy-in, 2 day phases. This group has played several games with each other, but we need someone to fill in one spot. Post here if you're interested. This is a pretty good group, so the games have been pretty challenging (we haven't seen a solo yet). As long as you don't have any CDs, I'll PM the password to the first interested player.

This game is going to need a new Germany
The game was paused for the xmas break, but one of the players never came back to unpause. We're probably going to get a mod to unpause so we can continue - does anyone want the German position? It's not great, but also not over yet.
